I've been hearing this word quite alot online recently, I've noticed people seem to fucking hate hipsters. And I'm now a little frightend I may actually be the target of all this hatred.
Just to get things straight, I'm from the UK, we don't really have the term hipster here (to my knowledge anyway), so I dont have much info on them, so I urbandictionary'ed it.
I am a skinny white girl, early 20s. I have visable 'old school' tattoos, I wear 'geeky' glasses, I love comics and retro gaming, and modern gaming aswell in fact, I'm into art and photography, and vintage clothes mainly from charity stores, and my music taste is pretty obscure if I'm honest. And I shop at Urban Outfitters and American Apparell too :/
The only box I didn't tick is that I'm not from a major American city. Does that mean I'm okay? Do you have to be American to be a dreaded hipster? Or do I just need to learn to accept that people hate me? Will people throw things at me in the States?
Srsly though, I'm worried.

I thought Manchester, Great Britain and Toronto, Canada were the breeding ground of hipsters. As long as you don't say "I liked it before it was cool" or use the term Ironicly to describe your clothing your safe. Also if you call yourself a Hipster your not a Hipster if that helps, so you might be a hipster.

Do you hate most mainstream things and walk around with a pretentious asshole-ish attitude?

If yes, then you're a hipster.

If no, then you're not.

Im afraid hipsters dont have to be from an American city, in fact London is full them/you/us.

Although one thing Ive noticed is that youd be very hard pressed to find someone in the 18-25 age bracket who doesnt have some hipsterish tendencies, especially if you have any appreciation of music.

Honestly, what does it matter? Stop caring about what other people think and live your own life.

You may be a hipster but if so, that's who you are, embrace it.

And for the record, "hipster" is much about the pretentious attitude as it is about the clothes.

I'm not really sure why it matters. Don't put a label on yourself, just be who you want to be.

Why do you care what category other people lump you into? What you do defines you, not how other people perceive you.

Anyway, from Urban Dictionary:
Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. ... Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses.

Embracing things is too mainstream... Also, you're likely the most memorable person to me at the moment on the Escapist. I see you everywhere and I love your avatar.

EDIT: I've already posted this today but I think it fits very very well.

If you have to ask, you are not one, because it shows you're exerting more self-awareness than an actual 'hipster' is capable of.

You really shouldn't be that upset with being called a hipster, their clothes look nice, they tend to be very artistic and they're really not that hated as far as I can see. They're just a growing society of kids, no different from Jocks, Geeks, Goth or any other social group you can think of.

It's only hipster if you're not from the UK, but you're act like it. Seeing how you're actually from there its not hipster. You're just what they consider hip, or w/e word those people use.

Whats wrong with hating most mainstream things????
Absolutely nothing, but there's no need to wear it like a badge of pride.

Hipster is another term that doesn't really label things well.

You don't need to label yourself, but if you like the idea then go ahead. Label yourself by someone's else idea.

The way I see if hipsters hate popular things *because* they are popular. I mean I hate a bunch of "popular" things (Twilight, Halo, Justin Beiber's Music tc etc) but for other reasons, does that make me a hipster? :/

Hipsters are people who aren't afraid of being called "hipster", or take pride in it.

That method of thought, as opposed to "denying being a hipster", "calling others hipsters" or "not caring about the word "hipster"".
