Anime tends to have more compelling stories than western cartoons, as well as just plain insanity. There's the good, there's the bad, but it has a good number of high quality series. A good number have proven very introspective in scope, and thus interest me greatly.
I started actually watching for the same reason as the OP, and it was a steep and slippery slope from there.

Luckily I've never had that feeling, Anime has always been a big "meh" for me.

3b. I'm not entirely sure how to respond to this. I get what you mean, and admittedly, I too find it a bit confusing when honorifics are replaced (not when they're removed, though.). The big-brother thing is weird for me as well. At the same time, as a fandubber, I understand that stuff like that leaves a tough decision for the writer. Change 'em, and you incur the wrath of purists and make dialogue in Japan-set shows feel unnatural and forced. Keep 'em and the dialogue becomes slightly disjointed and still sounds unnatural or even a bit annoying (honorifics just don't fit well in our speech). Getting rid of them is just the easiest thing to do in that case.

3b. Oddly enough I don't mind it when they leave 'em in especially in Japan set show, particularly because there's no real English Equivelant.
EG. There's a german word (that I'm not sure I'm spelling right) Backfeifangesicht, it means "A face badly in need of a fist" good luck translating THAT literally, this would be one case where a woolyism is needed.
I can only think of one woolyisms I personally like, it's in bleach oddly enough, Kenpachi's nickname Ken-Chan gets changed to kenny, while not quite as good as it loses some meaning it was a necessery cange after they removed the suffixes from their names.

The main problem with removing them is that a lot of the meaning and subtlety behind what they are saying is lost, at least when they're left in you can learn the meanings and glean some of what was intended.

But now I'm ranting.

4. 4kids Dub makes me cry, haven't seen the Funimation dub though, I got about fifty to eighty episodes in fansubbed then kinda lost interest.

As I said though if it's bad I'd probably have snapped long before I lost interest.

Well it's been fun discussing this with you, but I feel if we continue we'll just start repeating ourselves at this point.

In the end it comes down to personal preferance I guess, though I will say now that subs are now and will forever be better, I'm not gonna jump down somnebodies throat for prefering dubs.
Unless of course it's because they "don't like to read", god that annoys me.

It's just personal preference which one you want to watch, I just know that with a very few exceptions I'd personally rather watch subs that watch even a good dub.

Coleen Clinkenbeard (FUNI Luffy) I actually have no problem with, but I'll be straight with you: I just really love Coleen Clinkenbeard. Her voice to people who aren't me can get just as grating I assume.

But anyway, yeah it's been fun discussing this (part of the reason I signed up here; you don't get this kinda talk in some other forums). And yes, that's a sentiment I can get behind and what I hope we as anime fans can accept soon. We have our preferences, we have our reasons for said preferences. Discuss said preferences, but don't get in eachother's faces (so to speak) and insult the other half simply for having said preferences (unless they're asshats). It's the same damn show in the end.

I agree, except for one minor gripe (sorry I know I said I was done) some dubs (usually but not always only the REALLY bad ones) completely change the mood of the show, thankfully that's on the decline but still...

though even completely changing the theme has worked at least once.

Also, there's nothing wrong with anime as long as you do things other than watch/talk/read/eat/sleep/breath/I think you get the point by now, about anime. I've seen more than I can possibly even remember all of the titles to, and most of them are simply OK. There are a handful out there though that are like finding a diamond in a big heaping pile of mediocrity.

Yeah, i sort of know what you mean, i got into anime like Pokemon and Naruto when i was younger but then i just kind of forgot about anime existing for a while, then one of my friends sent me an anime called "Shuffle!" at first when watching it i did as i do with EVERYTHING and started trying to guess what was going to happen in the end, it seemed like the normal old run of the mill anime setting, teenage guy surrounded by beautiful girls with tragic pasts and secrets, they all have a secret crush on him but then the main character just started not doing ANY of the stuff i expected him to, i honestly liked it a lot and started looking for more, if you liked Darker than Black you may like 11 Eyes, Higurashi, Bakemonogatari, Chaos;Head and Code Geass ,i thought they were pretty good.

I never joke. I grew up watching Speed Racer, Astro Boy, Gigantor, 4kids stuff, and the like. What most people consider "bad" I call "slightly above average" because I have seen the worst dubbing has to offer.

As for your sudden liking of anime, it's not too surprising. Anime is just another type of medium. You probably just had little exposure to it, and what you did see was probably the stupid stuff.

As for my opinion of anime/manga, it goes like this: 95% of the mediums are totally crap, but the other 5% for each is amazingly good. It's kind of a weird hate/love relationship.

I like the animation and the culture, it is most intresting to someone like me, and also anime grew on me too, I watched Yu Gi oh and I liked it (when I was young) then Naruto but then I got lost on the Cartoon Network eps, A bit of bleach and then I got lost, and then I watched more naruto around two years ago and since then I loved it, then I got into romance.....like Clannad, awesome

If you're open minded and watch shows from many different countries, you'll find that you enjoy many different formats. It doesn't mean you're a strict anime fanboy, it means you're more open to other cultures.

Be open minded and watch things from lots of places, not just your own language. I believe I've seen movies and TV shows produced on every continent except Antarctica (March of the Penguins was only filmed there).

*As a Canadian, I confess I actually have no idea if Chilly Beach is funny to non-Canadians.

Speaking of the Ong-Bak trilogy, I just finished those a couple weeks ago and damn it, were they good. Though the first one was the best. Still though, damn. Awesome style of movies. Speaking of good foreign films, you guys should check out District B13. Awesome French parkour/martial arts movie.

On topic, exposure means you'll experience a lot of what the world has to offer, and depending on your tastes you could end up liking a little bit of each country's movies and culture. I got started on anime with Toonami waaaaaay back in 1997, when Johnny Quest, Robotech and Sailor Moon were on there, and Motaro from Space Ghost was the host (forget Tom). After that was DBZ, and then Pokemon, and then I gradually grew from there.

Shuffle! has one of the best romances in it I've seen for a harem anime (shoujo? I don't know the term for those kinds). I was rooting for him to get with the green-haired girl, and he did! I was happy. :3

(Still not done! Novella anyone? I'm reading backwards, which is why my post is all wonky and edited.) On the topic of dubbing I have to say that Ghost in the Shell is some of the best dubbing I've ever seen in the states. I absolutely love the voices of Batou and the Major.
