Am I not a gamer?

If you play games regularly as a hobby, you're a gamer. Simple as.

Unless you play anything made by Zynga, those are jobs, not games.

What about MMO's also? They do the same thing, just don't give you any breaks in between plantings or whatever?

MMO's have more things to do, well most of them do. You can't explore or RP in something like Farmville.

So i was bored enough to go kill some time on Omegle (random chat site) and one conversation turned to games and gaming, and discussion turned to Nintendo, i stated the fact that i don't like any of their newer games, and in particular SSB, and i was asked what games i normally play, so i said mostly shooters and some survival horror titles, and all of a sudden im not a gamer.

All because i play mostly shooters and don't like any of Nintendos newer games.

I was wondering peoples opinion of this and whether or not anyone else has received this same sort of narrow mindedness when it comes to the definition of "gamer" or whether or not you are a gamer just cause you don't like one game or another

You play games you are a gamer, no matter what kind of games you play.

I own a Wii and bar Wii Sports none of the games I own for it would be considered casual games.Not everyone who owns a Wii uses it for Wii Fit and Carnival games you know

If your getting paid, your a professional gamer.

I'm always surprised by gamer elitism... its so pathetic.

Beyond that you can categorise people by their interaction with games... things like Noob, achievement whore, asshat, loner, pre-ball droppers, casual etc...

There are only two kinds of people who play things that resemble games that I do not consider gamers.

People who play nothing but sports games. That's not gaming, that's a power fantasy, which are fine, and are PART of gaming, but do not make up gaming as a whole. If you play other things AND sports games, fine - I'll call you a gamer if you like Madden AND Call of Duty, but please, if all you ever do is play Madden '10, don't try and call yourself a gamer. You're a football enthusiast.

People who play facebook games and only facebook games. People who stick to things like Farmville exclusively are not gamers. My mother and great aunt play Farmville. They're not gamers. They don't know anything about the culture surrounding gaming and just play those games to turn their brains off after a long day's work. While it is amusing oneself with a game, it doesn't fall under cultural category in which I sort "gamers".

Survival horror and shooters? You sound like a gamer to me.
