I have thought about buying an Xbox for quite some time now. It'll my first console since the SNES, so I have a few questions.

What are shooters like? I just can't imagine myself playing with a controller instead of mouse and keyboard.

When is the best time to buy one? I'm pretty poor, so I'm considering either wishing one for Christmas, or buying one in the (hopefully) January sale. But do the prizes actually drop?

EDIT: Also, Saints Row 2 or GTA IV? Bought GTA IV for my PC, but sadly I couldn't even run it :(

IMO just upgrade your PC, I bought a 360 but hardly ever play it, if you MUST get one then get the elite w/ ODST for $449 (AUD) It's worth it if you want to play the console ports when they were good (see GTA IV)

EDIT: Saint's Row DEFINITELY! I got both and SR2 is just SOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER!

I remember making the transition from pc shooters to console ones. I was a big PC FPS guy, Deus Ex (STILL awesome), System Shock, Thief... it can be a little tricky, but with the games out nowaday, it should be pretty smooth. Check out Bioshock and you should be pretty well acquainted to the whole situation. Come November a special edition Xbox is coming out with Modern Warfare 2. It's a bit pricey, but the hard drive is extra large and won't be available for retail for quite a while. I'd suggest that, but price drops occur about every year around the hollidays. Apart from that, welcome to the console age. Might see you around.

EDIT: SR2 and GTA IV are both loads of fun. The former moreso than the latter.

It's a fun system, I traded in my Wii for my 360 and I never looked back. You could just stick with the PC like T3h Camp3r T3rr0r1st said, because a lot (alright, some) of the games that are out on the 360 are also out for the PC.

Just upgrade your PC.
The online community is far bigger then the xbox community (as far as I can tell *looks at WoW*), and alot of games on the consoles are still being released on PC, only a little later.

upgrade pc if you want more high quality gaming fun (all console games are graphic-wise, average in comparison), the ability to get mods, and an online comminity who have an unexplainable hatred of the console "plebs".

Get a 360 for a far more easier to run console, with content at an earlier date and the risk of RROD. That and a online comminity who have an unexplainable hatred of the "elitest" pc gamers.

You'll need to send your resume to Microsoft so human resources can look it over, then they'll tell you if you qualify.

But to answer your question... Only you can really know. I say do it.

I used to be a huge PC gamer, but I got my 360 and am loving it.
I can't afford to build a new PC, and I certainly can't convince my wife to let me spend that kind of money on a 'gaming' pc. But she doesn't mind the nice upscaling DVD player that just so happens to double as a gaming system for me!
Plus I enjoy the simplicity of it. I do tech work at my job, and when I get home to play games, I just want to throw something in, lay back on my couch, and play. I still use my net-book to play the only PC games I care about (Namely: Baldur's Gate), but everything else is on my 360. And I love it. I wouldn't mind a PS3 for the blue-ray, though.

no source except for the guy at the shop, the new ones use a more expensive processor than the previous because originally they just wanted to sell as many as possible, this is also why there has been almost no price drop.

I need a reliable source or else I have to write this:

"So you have nothing to back up what you wrote?"

Do you want me to do it?

I know that the newer models don't get the RROD as quickly but AFAIK they can still get it.

If you do get one, get the Elite. You might not need the extra storage space, but it has a much lower failure rate apparently.

The prices won't drop unless Sony or Nintendo drop their prices, and neither is a likely option.

I'd get Saint's Row 2: if it's anything like the original, it'll be shades better than GTA4.

I suggest (although this will be more expensive) getting a PS3 and keeping your PC. That way you will get both the 360's exclusives on PC and the PS3 exclusives.
Just my opinion.

If your use to computer games I would stick with computer games. A lot of people that try and transision from computer games to console games tend to not like the console because of the limatations of the controller. I myself love my Xbox and Ps3 but thats because I only play a select few games on the computer. I would give it a try before you go out and buy one. Try and borrow one from one of your friends.

I agree with everyone else on this forum. Consoles don't really add anything youn couldn't get from computers. Especially considering some games have DLC that's only available to computer versions of the game (Team Fortress 2).

The only real 'qualification' for getting a 360 is if you want one or not (although an NVQ or BTEC is also acceptable).

If your unsure about playing an Xbox then go around a friend's place (this is assuming that the friend in question has an Xbox 360) and play on their's for a bit, that way you get a 'free trial'.

Don't listen to the guys who are saying 'the Xbox is shit' or 'the PS3 sucks balls', all the consoles are much of a muchness, it's mostly a case of personal preference (same applies to the PC before anyone starts declaring it's superiority, it has it's limitations just like the rest of them).

I'd say you may not like to get one. Seeing as you said you don't have a lot of money I don't know if you would be able to dish out $60 a year for xbox live along with $70 for each new game you get, plus the additional amount for the 360 depending on which package you buy and if it is new or used. The upside is even if you get the RROD you can send it in and get it repaired for free.

I sold my Xbox360 to get a better computer because there are too many restrictions with consoles. I used my computer more anyway, when I had my 360.

Also, if you get a 360, enjoy paying for an internet connection you already have.
