Soul Calibur (unsure if i'm spelling that right) was one of my favorite fighting games. It was pretty easy to pick up, and even though the super moves useto be really hard to use. I could still easily win the fight without too much trouble. Now V has come along.

I know they offer a restart the match with a easier difficulty setting, which i have had to do for EVERY fight because it seems the enemies can link literally 15 attacks together when I can't even link more than two. They keep me on the floor, i can't get up OR block because they constantly attack until I am dead.

Which is what I hate about fighting games. NONE of them are easy. I'm not talking about easy to play, I mean easy to pick up. It takes hundreds of hours to master all the attacks and combos, even the simple ones. I'm sitting here going attack.....attack....attack, because i can't figure out how to attackattackattack. I don't know if anyone else has this problem because I do practice and I can never seem to nail the combos, or I miss but one move and it screws up the whole combo.

Does anyone else have this problem with games?

ALSO THE NAMES FOR THE BUTTONS, I HAVE TO SIT THERE FOR 20 MINUTES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY K IS Y OR SOMETHING.

You keep mentioning combos, and yet SC is one of the least combo reliant fighting games out there. It's also one of the easiest to just pick up and play with no previous knowledge because of it's reliance on single moves and short move strings as opposed to special moves and combos.

It's tough to say exactly where you're going wrong, but it sounds like your mindset may be a little off. James Chen just recently did a video on the two most important fundamentals in fighting game play: spacing and movement, and learning to not press buttons. Perhaps it's something that may help you out a little. :)

(the introductory stuff ends up 7min in. It's a little rough, but it was their first stream and it's still watchable with some good info for less experienced players)

Doing combos isn't really the most important aspect of being good at a fighting game.

Unless you're playing street fighter 4... then god help you.

Might as well adress the different names for buttons.

1) These are the names of the buttons for the arcade machines. It makes more sense on an arcade stick layout and feels more intuitive. It's also easier to refer to in discussions about the game. More people will understand "press K" than when you say "press Y". K refers to a specific action while Y refers to a button, which is only for a certain console, which could be mapped to a different action for people using a fightstick for example.

2) You should be able to change all the button controls. I don't know how easy it would be to change the button names for movelists for when you change controls.

actually this is the reason I love soul calibur (and to a lesser extent Super smash bros.) because I can actually play these games with my friends without forcing them to go into training and learn their entire move-set.

make sure you're blocking (it's pretty important) and if you get into a position where you can't block (on the ground) try rolling sideways or bacwards depending if the enemy is using a lot of horizontal or vertical attacks.

You might also have an ability to attack while 'rising' you might want to look into that.

You are never the only one.
Anyway, in the SNES days I played alot of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 so I decided to pick up the Capcom bundle on PSN for $12.50 the other day. It had Super Street Fighter 2 turbo HD with it, I found out that I just can't play fighting games anymore.

On the positive side, I got Age of Booty and Super Puzzle Fighter 2, both enjoyable games for short periods of time.

Pretty sure that nightmare just did a combo that brought my HP down to 0 at the start of the fight, You have to block the first move otherwise he keeps you in the combo.

Feels broken

Sounds like a problem of the game rather than the genre. That's just plain poor balancing.

I hate that about marvel vs capcom too personally... how you can KO someone in a combo. It's pretty broken and that's why I don't play it.

You're not the only one; fighting games take loads more dedication than your average game to be good at, and some people don't want to put in the time. That and some people seem to have a natural talent for playing them.

Personally, I started playing fighting games about two years ago with the first BlazBlue game and I've had a feeling that I've been getting better gradually ever since. Honestly, I love that feeling. Finding that I can do something I couldn't do before.

I seriously doubt that there are touch-of-death combos in SCV. In all the footage I've seen the biggest combo was about 9 hits and didn't even take out half of a life bar. Maybe you're just not blocking at all? Even in UMvC3 which is notorious for high damage combos there are no real touch-of-death combos unless you burn X-Factor of the beginning of the match.

I used to be like that OP. It makes sense that the only fighting game I've ever really liked is UMVC3. I know I wouldn't have put the time into it if I didn't have the "must get better with Phoenix Wright" fanboy mindset hanging over me. Crossovers ftw

And yeah the bullshit combos are annoying, people complain about my forward + heavy spamming Ammy (technically medium THEN forward + heavy spam,) but would it make you feel any better if I beat you with a 100 hit Ammy only with assists wtf was that type combo?

The way i see it i'm giving you a chance to respond rather than combo locking you like a *****. If you can't block, advance guard then counterattack then sorry bro, it's your problem.

And if you really must complain, just console yourself with "at least it's not FOOT DIVE! spamming Doom again..."

That's why Phoenix Wright is such a boss, Turnabout + Lvl 3 X Factor does so much damage per hit. I can just do the basic 6 or so hit combo and if he survives that just throw some evidence beams at him from across the screen to finish him.

Oh there was a patch today wasn't there? Did that nerf Wesker by any chance? It might have given PW's Assist super armour. I swear he walked through the occasional projectile unharmed like in the good old days but still got hit out of it by other stuff.

I don't like fighting games.
Except Smash Bros. (which I know barely compares to the likes of Street Fighter or Marvel vs. Capcom, but that's maybe why I like it.)

The small, enclosed, HP-bars-at-the-top-of-the-screen style beat-em-up? I can play them, and I'm a quick-enough learner to the point I'm confident I could become very skilled with a day's practice, but I don't really see the appeal.

I have trouble with fighting games. While I think they're a blast to play, they lack the kind of depth I like, a lot of the time. While I know playing can be varied and complex as any RPG, the genre just sort of lacks the cohesion I like in games. I do love Smash Bros, though, and Soul Calibur V looks neato.

YOU ARE NEVER THE ONLY ONE!

I like them, but in a mashing buttons with friends that would make actual fans cringe sense. Though sometimes I do go into fighting game threads to read up on techniques I can use to annoy my friends.
