so i got bored and looked around for something new to play, lo and behold on steams free to play bracket, planetside 2. so i waited an hour for it to download and install and what did i get? a mediocre space version of battlefield 2. oh ya the graphics are nice but its really nothing new and exciting. yet when i look around for reviews to see what other people said about it, apparently people love the crap out of it, so i feel a little jaded. am i really the only person that just generally dislikes this game?

You're never the only one etc etc.

I haven't played PS2 (can't actually run it, hope to remedy that soon) but I loved PS1 and for me it was due to the whole persistent world idea. I just love the fact you can be involved in these huge battles that cover such a large area, log off and come back to see your faction has pushed on to the next planet.

That, and the kind of BF2142 vibe it has makes me happy. If DICE released a BF2142 MMOFPS I'd probably cry.

There are 6 billion people on the planet we call Earth. So no, probably not.

Smart ass comments aside, I also dislike it. After being dropped into the middle of a warzone with not so much as a mission briefing or a tutorial only to find out it was CoD with a futuristic skin was extremely disappointing. I'll stick to FireFall for now.

And frankly speaking, it seems the general skill level of the players is quite subpar. I haven't played a shooter besides TF2 since MW2 was fresh off the press and I still managed to get a huge killstreak before I ended up wandering into enemy territory and being surrounded.

The game then proceeded to spawn me in the line of fire of enemies causing me to insta-die upon spawn about five times in a row before I shut the game down and uninstalled it.

I'm just annoyed because APPARENTLY if you try to reset your password too many times because you forgot your Sony password or something it locks you out for 24 hours.
Gee, that's be nice to know BEFORE I GOT LOCKED OUT.

Oh god, there are already people telling the OP he is not the only one despite the OP possibly knowing this and using the "Am I the only one line" to add emphasis to his statement. I mean, how boring would "I believe me and a few others don't like Planetside 2"

OT: Never heard of it...
How bout "I don't like Planetside 2" or some variant of that.

OT: haven't played it yet, but I want to play it with my friends once school is over.

It needed another six months in development.

Vehicle controls aren't fully customisable. Graphics engine puts out pretty pictures but is poorly optimised still. The monetisation scheme is poorly thought out (I want to give them some cash because I've enjoyed the time thus far, but any kind of reasonable return only comes from the monthly plan, and I flat refuse to get a monthly sub. Also, gues and fiddly upgrades are fragging expensive and only unlock on one character.)

Aside from that, it's not bad. It could have been great, but it really isn't.

I reckon it needs some kind of tutorial area or something, I found it very confusing just being dropped into a battle and being insta-killed. Not how I really wanted to start a new game.
I imagine it would be really fun to play with a group friends though, the big battles were pretty epic with ships exploding and crashing into the ground all around me an shit

Seriously?

As I type a Steam popup appeared showing one of my friends is playing PS2...Weird.

I'm going to say if you don't like it then fine. There are lots like you. There are just a lot more that do like it. I found Dragon Age tedious. Am I the only one? No I am not. I would not be so naive as to think so. It seems like a BF2142 knockoff and that is most likely a good thing as it was a fun game. Now we have something similar with a better engine. Win for all.

Your not the only one, trust me I have met just as many people that don't like it as do like it but overall I have mixed feelings about the game.

First off, the one thing that is testing my patience is the scaling render distance on infantry. Every time you get into a massive battle troops start to disappear and sometimes disappear not more then 10 feet in front of you. I originally wanted to play Infiltrator (switched to medic because of the render distance)but the class is almost completely useless outside of hacking terminals because it become impossible to kill targets at range. Countering enemy snipers has the same problem because you can't see where they are shooting from due to the render issues.

From what I gather from forums the rendering scales with the amount of players in the area so pretty much any large scale battle will amount to a big cluster f**k of grenade spam and dying to enemies you can't even see. It is something that I feel is game breaking because it pretty much throws any hope of tactics in large scale battles out the window.

Another thing that I think is an issue right now...air vehicles. Aircraft have always been an issue in large scale FPS games because they are almost always too damn powerful, it was one of the reasons I left BF3 because it just felt like the whole map was determined by who had the better pilots or better upgrades and I feel the same thing with PS2.

Rocket pods and that one hit kill cannon you can buy for the liberator are absolutely dominating the battlefield right now. I have seen 2 scythes literally hold off an entire zerg by just doing nothing but spamming rockets from distance. Just looking at the majority of battle ranks of these pilots have, many are almost BR 40 because it so easy to kill absolutely everything that you rake in the XP and certifications. People are catching on and the skies are getting clogged full of aircraft because people know its an easy way to rake in the points and dominate the battlefield. On top of that ground to air weapons are pretty much useless because none can survive long enough to be any serious threat. Base turrets and vehicles are neutralized within the first 30 secs of a large attack because you can rocket spam them dead in one salvo.

There are many more things I could name that frustrate me about this game like just how useless Galaxies have become and how much more of an advantage subscribers have over F2P when it comes to certifications. With all that said I still think this game has amazing potential as an F2P shooter but there are many things about it that ultimately remind me of BF3 and why I stopped playing that game. If they can jump on the issues and work on balancing the combat I think this game will be something I play for a long time to come but as of right now...I'm just frustrated with it.

Your problem, OP, is that it seems you have joined the wrong faction. Allow me to set you on the right path:

The original Planetside came out 3 years before bf2142. But it really could use some kind of tutorial area, the original had an island base that everyone spawned at and then would take portals to the continents to fight, there was also a shooting range that helped with getting the hang of the fiddly weapons it had. Its a bit disorienting how Planetside 2 just dumps you into the action, not the best way to get people into the game.

I'll start enjoying it when they put in a colour-blind mode, I'm basically useless with a gun right now because I can't tell where/what I'm shooting at.

Also the game is pretty poorly optimised, seems like they rushed it for absolutely no reason at all.

And being dropped in the middle of a battle when you have no idea what is going on is the most obnoxious way to introduce someone to your game ever -.- I get that they wanted you to see a big cool fight before you started messing around with your classes and certs or whatever but jesus christ let us figure out the controls first.

I first played PlanetSide in 2003. I have a Vanu Sovereignty tattoo. Most fun couple of year I've ever had playing a video game. That said, PS2 just does not have the same feel on so many levels, and I quit playing beta about a 3 weeks in and never looked back. I have been playing video games for a long time, and if it's one thing I've learned it's to know a turd when I smell one, cut my losses and go play something that won't be a complete disappointment.
