"This is mostly because they just don't seem to know how to make a console game if their lives depended on it." This line right here made me laugh out a tiny tear. Who cares? They are a PC developer.

Afaik the reason they have trouble with DLC is because MS has decided that ALL DLC shall cost money on xbox live NO MATTER WHAT. And Valve wants to give us their DLC free.

If you seriously manage to fault Valve for that there is no convincing you.

Valve recently released DLC for Portal 2. For free. They are releasing MOD TOOLS so players can make their own levels. Instead of bleeding customers for a few extra buck with shit content like some other developers.

Valve are not gods, they are not infallible, but they are damn well lightyears ahead of IW/Treyarch!
not true, fable 3 has free dlc(albeit a hat) and i am sure others have free stuff(actually i think SC4 has some free stuff too) but go ahead, bad mouth MS cause its the cool thing among douchey people nowadays.

I love valve, but I have always hated team fortress. I don't really get why people like that game. There is no gratification in playing it at all. At least, for me.

valve only made one good game IMO..portal..everything else they have made i have not enjoyed. as for people saying 360 doesn't do free DLC that is an outright lie,and you should check your facts before posting such slander.

I don't like them, as much as I respect them. When you hear ''Valve Game'' you know you are getting a quality game. Same as DICE, Blizzard, CD Project RED (And lately Square Enix and TQH).

I do hate Valve not because of there games I'm not a fan of them but that's just my personal taste its the fact that I don't like buying games digitally yet for some reason all the PC games I own that valve had nothing to do with force me to use steam and everyone lets Valve get away with this yet when EA tries to do the same thing with games they funded and they are only doing it cause Valve wants a piece of the money from selling DLC they had nothing to do with either and people call EA money grubbing at least they are honest when they do it. I would be rather punched in the face than stabbed in the back
um, you make a fine point, valvue just gets away with stuff because they make good games, portal 2 awesome, but the fans are annoying, its mostly due to the rep they have, meanwhile ea has a very bad rep, thats why orgin is causeing all this fuss.

They're just as addicted to profits as anyone else out there. The redux of TF2 with the hats was a marketing scheme of devilish proportions.
Y'know I wonder how people can justify their "I won't pay for DLC thats on the disc" and uphold VALVe's policy of selling items that you can unlock on your own or craft yourself. "Sure you can unlock it, if you're patient... but hey we've got it here for a few bucks and you can have it now..." That sounds like the fucking devil the church used to warn me about... lols
snip
Wait wait wait wait... you'd rather they lock content behind a paywall? Isn't that the opposite of what everyone else thinks? I suggest you look up Firefall, a AAA persistent world shooter with RPG elements. It's going to be free to play and the only thing they are selling in their item shop is convenience. Exp boosters, cosmetic items etc.

Time=money, especially for people with full time jobs and a family. It sounds like the perfect system to me, you can either spend 5 hours gathering the items required to craft something or you can spend $5 or so to get it instantly. Would you pay $5 to have an extra 5 hours worth of time to play the game how you want? Some people would. "The Devil" is godamn smart man.

Anyway yes hats are one of the strangest swindle's I've seen.

OT:
Some people dislike Valve or steam, that's fine. However I honestly believe without steam and its sales I would not be a PC gamer right now. I was stuck on cruddy F2P MMOs like every other stupid kid/teenager and was more beholden to consoles. I pirated stuff. Then TF2 was on sale for $10 and I bought it. Now I have more games than I can play. I don't torrent games anymore. Steam just made it so easy to get games there was no point. If 5 years down the track Valve collapses in the 20th GFC and all my games are gone... eh. I would never have bought them and enjoyed them in the first place if it wasn't for steam.

I mean maybe the Battlefield franchise which I'm also beholden to would've sucked me into the realms of legit PC gaming anyway... maybe.

As for the console issue. Yes, if Valve decides to have their games on console they're responsible for the quality of said games and should be held accountable. If MS won't let them patch stuff then release the game in a state where patches are unnecessary! (I'm aware this runs counter Valve's "release it and see what breaks" policy of quality control)

However if the sole reason you HATE Valve is because of their console failures then you're doing it wrong.

Nothing all bad has come from valve...except the belays but we can do nothing about that.
All there games are good and are generally pushing something, new technology, new mechanics etc.
They have given a lot and they try to make their loyal fans feel special by providing free DLC and up dates, the fact the opened source up for moding resulting in loads of good stuff.
Valve is essentially giving you all this, ok on the consoles you do not get all these benefits but they are trying to brake new ground.

Valve doesn't make bad counsel games, you just don't enjoy them. There is a big difference between releasing a game that some people don't enjoy, then say releasing a game that breaks or has certain features that don't work (ala Borderlands) due to poor programming. Lots of people enjoyed the orange box, lots of people enjoyed Portal 2 on the 360 and PS3, hell lots of people enjoyed the PS2 version of the original PS2.

Yes Valve releases great DLC over steam and not the 360, but TF2 is a 4 year old game, if you didn't know they released updates for the PC would you fault them for not updating the Orange Box? (Also remember how they gave exclusive DLC for Portal on the 360, which was also a part of the Orange Box).

As per the DLC for other games, I think Valve works under the idea that they will only release a product when its finished, and release the entire product, their lack of DLC is more due to pushing a more complete product then being not giving enough effort.

This man/woman sums up my opinion of Valve pretty well.

An above-average dev whose only calim to fame is the level to which their fanboys/girls will wank all over their silver medal games, the ferocity with which said fanboys/girls will completely ignore any genuine complaints or differing opinions on their games.

Also they made a videogame store online that sells digital copies on the cheap, whoopty fucking doo.

Well, the DLc bit isn't quite fair. They do it for free, and They run on Valve time. They just want to make sure it's good. And spamming Dlc everywhere is shit. Where would the anticipation be? (And you really shouldn't play on the consoles anyway. Consoles are great, but with shooters you never quite get the proper aiming done (at least I don't).)

Also, they released plenty of dlc (FREE DLC) for tf2! a game with over 119 updates! ALL FOR FREE. And Portal 2 DLC I need too check out soon. I don't see other devs doing that. Free content, quite (ahem) regularly. good too. Hell, they even made a fine game free for the heck of it!
They also sell their games quite cheap, and have quite a lot of sales. which make them even cheaper! bonus kits, pre-order stuff, all sorts of gaming goodness can be found in their store!
They also fixed all my issues (but for one I have currently, but I'm sure it will be patched) with regular status updates and general niceness.

And for some people who say "OOh free dlc won't be able for long" I say one word: Hats. They are bought so many, this picture is quite relevant. And if not hats, keys and weapons and games.
I am sure Valve will last. They are my favourite distributor , game devs and their platform is great too.

And if Valve isn't the best developer, who is? EA? Bethesda? I don't think so, but you might. It's a matter of taste and preference really. I just like all their big titles, their platform, and their dlc developing greatness.

Allright, that's just nay-saying. give some valid points why, or I can't take you seriously. It's like saying you hate ice because fuck ice. There are several flaws to be listed in ice, give 10 reasons or something; it's slippery, cold, slippery (can't be pressed enough) , and an arrogant bastard. (if you get that sloppily translated reference, my head will explode). Explain your stance For goodness' sake man !

What's wrong with cheap games? I can't think of anything, can you? It beats the 60$ system, don't you think?

I hate Valve. A lot.

Pros:
-L4D is really awesome

Cons:
-Releases half-assed console ports and don't bother patching them
-Steam is bloated
-Making micro transactions more popular
-Insanely defensive fanboys. This isn't a fault of Valve, but if I mentioned anything slightly bad about them or PC gaming, I'll get devoured alive
-Taking forever to release games. I understand it takes time to make games, but isn't the point of episodic gaming making several smaller games that cost less in less time?

Valve is mainly a PC developer...even then Portal was great on console...
Most devs make DLC's as a cash grab...valve doesn't tend to do that.
Sure there's the shop and the micro transactions...if you want to waste your money go for it.
I never really got into L4D 1/2...I mean it was okay...but that's the black-sheep of valve.
They do take forever to develop, but when games do get released they're fucking awesome.
The Portal games are two of my all time favorites.
I like steam, they offer good deals like all the time...I really don't understand the dislike...

Valve isn't perfect but it's one of the best Developers...I mean at least they TRY to make their customers happy and DON'T shit in their customers face while stealing their wallet....cough EA, treyarch, capcom cough....

This may sound kind of backwards, and it is, but while I like their games, as developers they wouldn't be in my Top 5.

This is mostly because they just don't seem to know how to make a console game if their lives depended on it. Sure Valve's PC releases are great and all (Although I know quite a few people that say TF2 is a pile of shit now), but their (they're?) console release record is pretty damn spotty.

Yes, I know, Microsofts update/DLC policies are kind of shit. But when you can't even get a map pack out, that's pretty sad. What really annoys me is that for years they've been pointing the finger at Microsoft (And Sony) going "It's not us! It's them! They won't let us!" whilst other, more competent developers are able to get out a ton of DLC with little fuss. I mean, they announced the next bit of DLC for L4D2 around January. And it's not like they're building entirely new maps, they're just porting some old L4D1 maps. Any other developer could have knocked that out in a few short months. How is it other developers like Bethesda and Gearbox and even Infinity Ward/Treyarch are dependent enough to get out a good amount of DLC and updates for their games yet Valve can only get out, what? 2 bits of DLC for L4D2? Over almost two years? Both using the exact same last map to boot!

I've tried to criticism Valve in the past and am usually met with a tidal wave of hate because "They made Steam!" or "They made Half-Life/TF2/Portal!" Everybody seems to give them a free pass and I just find it shameful.
Oh god, buying console version of Valve games GRAUUUGHHHH MY BRAIN!! WHY!? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!!!?!!! WHYYYYYY!!!

Valve have their hand forced, they want to release map packs for free but they can't. They can do that on PC. Don't blame THEM for the shitty platform you chose to play on. The type of games they make are COMPLETELY UNSUITED to consoles, fundamentally. Yes they can "work" on consoles but it's not playing to their advantage.

If you are interested in Valve games you should play them on PC.

Valve are so respected because they REFUSE TO COMPROMISE for console platform, PC is the best for the type of games they are trying to make.

If you have any genuine concerns about gaming on PC I assure you they are not insurmountable. PM me your PC specifications and I'll guide you through how to get into PC gaming.

Fuck Valve. They are a shit developer that makes a few good games and just as many average or poor ones. They have a shitty development cycle. And, they are responsible for one of the biggest forced DRM platforms out there for the PC market so they get no love from me for there focus on PC gaming either.
Then tell that to every single other developer, PC's have been getting such a low quality of stuff, and Valve is actually doing something to fight that.

You don't name any games, so your complaint is 100% invalid.

All dev cycles take about 3 years, Valve goes by that time, but if a game ain't done, it ain't done.

"Forced DRM platforms" are you even listening to yourself anymore? You don't need Steam to play games on PC, thats why Direct-2-Drive exists, whats forced about it? And even then the DRM is barely noticeable, Consoles are a forced DRM if that makes a difference, if you want to play a game on a console, you have to own a console, THATS DRM being forced. No, a Forced DRM would be Origin, they automatically changed EA accounts to Origin accounts, thats forced, Valve hasn't done that. They instantly install Origin without your consent if you get a EA title.

They focus on the PC gaming side of things because for this whole console generation, we only get bad console ports, and very few quality ones. Not counting that Consoles give off more DRM then Steam does. Look at any Console major A game coming out, almost if not all have a form of DRM for buying the game used, meaning that you can't get certain content unless bought new. Does Steam do that? No.

Get off your knee jerked reactionary rants and actually look at the good, you can't have a complaint unless you acknowledge the good.

There's all this talk about that but I don't think I've EVER met someone who thinks Valve are unable to do any wrong. Even on here.

Seriously, can you point out one of these people? I'd really like to prove him wrong :)

I don't hate Valve by any means, but I do think they are glorified more than they should be.

I never thought Half Life was nearly as amazing as everyone says it was. Sure, I played it a little bit late in its lifetime, but that shouldn't make the gameplay dull. At the same time, however, I find it pathetic for the fans of that series that they can't get a new title in what is it now, 4 years? And this is on episodic content.

I feel like Steam is the only reason they have really stayed afloat, because it allows a constant flow of income without much real work behind it.

That said, there's numerous things that they do really well like listening to the fans and releasing DLC for free, so they still deserve serious respect.
