Picking up one of the dart's the assassin's had used in the attack, Marcus handed it to the king while looking at the prisoner distastefully

"Perhaps a taste of his own medicine would loosen his tounge"

He said with a cruel smile

Skang

The man looks to Marcus, his eyes wide, face still bearing a wicked grin, and drenched now in sweat.

"You don't deserve this world!" he spits, his mouth bleeding more profusely- he has bit his own tongue, and now salivates thick blood. "Kill yourself and save us all!"

Wriggling by his captors more strongly now, he breaks free of one guard's grip- enough to lunge forward and grab one of the darts that had fallen to the floor. He sweeps it up off the ground and sticks its pointed end into his neck before he can be reclaimed. His actions and his breathing slows, and he stares to the king with an almost dumbfounded expression, his body rapidly relaxing.

He only continues to stare, drooling.

Liatha

As the pirate ship is destroyed, the small line of sailors continue to weave through the city, headed toward the palace. Like ants moving toward the home, they heave the barrels of 'bananas' effortlessly in their arms and make swift progress. In almost no time at all, they reach the palace.

Standing side by side, they place the barrels by the base of the building. One of the lot, his face contorted by countless scars and burns, steps forward, pulling a cork free from his barrel. He tilts it; some substance, almost like ash, pours onto the ground. He draws a long line from the pile of barrels, to the group huddled further down the road. Grinning, one of his cronies hands him a fire he had struck, and he drops it onto the line. The group scurries away, as the small flame travels along the powder path.

An explosion rocks the very Earth. Pieces of the palace go soaring, some falling far off into the ocean. The ground quakes, and the palace shudders, collapsing upon itself. Portions of the cellar begin to collapse, blocking the entrance and dropping debris.

Jenje

The soldiers swiftly trot up the ramp to the ship after the group, and begin setting the hulking boat ready for sail. As citizens stroll by, some cast a curious glance, others not bothering to care. The sun shines brightly and the day is calm with just enough wind to sail- but a faint, almost unnoticeable mist hangs on the distant horizon.

They are your NPCs to control, I just thought I'd give Jenje a little push. However, they are normal soldiers (though Skang is stronger) and are prone to death.

"I say we torture him and cut him to pieces, use this man as an example of why the population should be grateful with what they have. Don't you agree Augustus?" Ronald said with a demented smile as he began to pluck the darts from his armor, tossing them onto the ground after ripping them from his suit.

"Try to get some information out of him before you kill him" Marcus insisted calmly, wiping blood off his silver rapier

For the second time in ass many minutes, Savan was bowled over by the blast. The shaking dropped pieces of the cellar roof amongst them, fortunately causing no serious injuries. The exit was now blocked by portions of the room that had been above. The king looked at the rubble, stunned at the twist of fate which caused this to happen. Of all the rooms in the palace, the pirates had managed to hit the very one they were hiding beneath.

Savan looked bewildered, unsure of what to do next.

"Can anyone think of anything we can do aside from waiting for rescue?" he asked the room at large.

"I..." Lady Tranus was confuused and scared, unable to comprehend what was going on. She collapsed to a stool, and tried to filter out her shock and fear.

Savan called over a guard.

"Round up what food and drink you can find down here. Give some of it out now, keep people distracted. Also, see if you can find something for people to sleep on, we may be forced to spend the night, or longer, down here."

As the few guards went to carry out the his orders, Savan sat near Lady Tranus. "You know, this may be a Casus Belli against Jenje, even if there is no direct evidence of his involvement. Mattiaus might advise us to use it." Savan finished with a questioning look at Tranus.

"Yes mi'lord... that's a fantastic idea..." Premousa sighed, forgetting what the King had said in a matter of seconds, "Why is always us who seem to have to tolerate either being assassinated or attacked? Couldn't we..." Lady Tranus remembered where she was, and shut up.

"Sorry your majesty, I think I'm on edge right now..."

Watching the palace disapear in flames and smoke, Mattiaus roared in frustration, "WITH ME!" He jumped to the dockside and jogged up the hil gathering everyman he could find, As he ran past a captain he grabbed him by his tunic "FIND ALL THE FUCKING PIRATES! YOU HEAR ME ALL OF THEM! AND WHEN YOU DO! KILL ALL OF THE FUCKERS! EACH AND EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM!!!" he turned to a guard "Every able bodied man in this city, to the palace cellars now, all of them, I am placing this city under Marshal law. Not to be lifted until I give the word! Get a horse, get to the barracks and rouse all of the Army all of it" The guard ran off. "The rest of you with me, we get the king out!" Mattiaus ran up the hill, and came to the centre of the palace, it was a total ruin. He organised the men into teams of moving rubble and clearing pathways, as more and more men arrived he ordered them to help. He posted guards on every building surrounding the palace ruins, each armed with bow ready to shoot any enemies.

Augustus was a little unease by the mams words. But he would have no show of it in the Castle.

He ordered his men to search their bodies, then to maim them and hang them from the largest tree in Skang.

The message would be shown.

Marcus finished cleaning his rapier then turned to the King and General

"Planned attack or hungry, desperate citizens?" he asked, glancing at the bodies

"I'd say planned, silver darts like these would be used by professionals and there moves were good...but not good enough" he ended with a laugh

Savan understood what Tranus had been about to say. To do such a thing would be a gamble, one against odds which did not favour Lithia. The stakes would be his kingdom on the one side with uncertain results on the other. Jenje could always crown another puppet, Skang could always find another general but Savan would be unlikely to ever get another kingdom, to say nothing of what might befall the people themselves. Exploited by Jenje villians or pressganged into service by Skang's forces, it would be a hard life for them indeed.

The silence dragged out for a few long moments before a noise could be heard, a scuffling from above filling the void that was the cellar. It was just a noise, and a small one at that, but it brought with it great hope. They had not been lost nor had they been forgotten amidst the chaos and cannonfire that had raged above.

"Ah, they're on it already. Mattiaus must have routed the pirates," Savan said to himself. "It shouldn't be long before we're out, a few hours maybe."

Sweat streamed off the men, even Mattiaus himself was mucky from digging out the rubble. They had searched several cellars so far and not one held the king. With the arrival of the Army the entire city was being searched building by building for any remaining pirates.

Mattiaus was drinking deep from a cup of water. Once he had had his fill of water he sent the water boy on to the next worker, several of these water boys were making the rounds to the men, keeping them fresh.

"The reasoning does not matter, these men attempted to kill all of us. They deserve no better then to be skinned alive and fed to the dogs!" Ronald shouted as he walked over towards the man who attempted to kill him, kicking him the groin as he lied on the ground. "Take him away to the chambers, do not return until every piece of flesh as been stripped from his body!"

The men turned and looked at their King. They were unsure whether or not to fallow the General's orders.

"He is right" the King sighed "We must make an example of these men"

Savan was a patient man, something he'd probably gained from working with bureaucrats for too long, but waiting in the cellar was different. Before it was easy to know what to do, even what to feel, when waiting. You knew when to get annoyed, when to make demands and when when it was time for someone to lose their job as clear as day. But in the cellar it was impossible to know when any of those were and even what to do or feel.

It was impossible to know that the hours were passing, thought they seemed to linger, until, finally, the scuffling that had long scratched away in the background broke into an almighty crash. Startled, the underground inhabitants turned as one to the entrance. Another crash and another, the sound of pickaxes falling on stone so very nearby, magnified by the silence which had preceded it and been eliminated. The commoners stirred then began crying out and, in response, the axes fell silent before they redoubled their noise. Stone began to fall around the entrance and the guards herded the people back.

Tense minutes stretched by with a pace far more languid than the hours which had preceded them. The people grew restless and their thoughts of freedom grew more and more vivid. The captain of the guard glanced over at the king who nodded. There was no reason to force them to wait on his pleasure, as soon it was safe they would leave first, now unhindered by the guards. Whilst Savan was a lover of ceremony he understood that it had little place amid the dark cellar.

Gradually light came into the cellar, forced into the cracks around the remaining debris that covered the entrance. Bit by bit it was allowed to take a more direct route ands the obstacles were removed until finally, with a great cheer from the workers and commoners alike, the finally chunk of brick and mortar was heaved away from the entrance. At the same time the guards moved away from their post to allow the flood of people to reach the surface. Savan waited for the frenzy to subdue before ascending himself.

Savan stepped out into the red evening light, seeing Mattiaus before him. Savan had intended to say his thanks to his most loyal friend. He had intended to congratulate his most courageous general. Instead he found himself incapable of speech as he saw the entire palace, all but razed on the eastern side with little left standing on the western. Where the damage to the palace was greatest there were also many destroyed houses which had surrounded the building. Savan could only find it in him to voice one question.

"What happened here?"

"Oh I am not making excuses for these men"

Marcus explained as the guards dragged the bodies away

"But I would like to know if this is the work of a group within our own city...or if one of the other city states is thinking of attacking. After all, a state without leaders is an easy catch"

"You make an excellent point, we should interrogate him then torture him. We won't gain anything from a dead man who lacks flesh, may as well get the information now before he is turned into a pile of bloody tissue." Ronald chuckled at the statement, a hideous grin appeared on his face as he laughed.

"Interrogate then torture? I did not realize there was a difference with you General!"

Marcus replied with a dark chuckle
