So, PSN has a copy of American McGee's Alice on PS3 download for £7.99. Is it worth getting? I've heard lots of good things about it, but it's all based on PC play rather than a PS3 port. Has anyone played it and is it any good?

Isn't it considered an add on for Madness Returns on consoles?

Just buy the new game, it comes with a copy of the original for free.

Then you can get it for any console/computer.

Also, having just got the Madness for the PS3. I can say the original game is a bit awkward to play with a controller. Not so much that it's unplayable. But I'll wait until I'm bored with the Madness before I complete the original.
Wow, really? Thanks, that's awesome news. I may just do that.

It may be, but they're offering as a stand alone too on the PSN.

Sure, there is a new one, but it's 50 bucks. If that floats your boat, might as well buy the new one and get the old one free. However, from what im hearing, the new one isn't all that well liked. The old one was genius, well worth the money...of course the grahics are quite outdated, and your mileage may vary regarding your ability to appreciate a good art style without a lot of power. Which is fine, btw. War and Peace may be a great book, but if your copy is written in crayon, you might not be able to get past that, even if idealistically it should be only the words that matter. Basically, if you are frugal and put some stock in reviews, and you also are in the mood for a high aesthetic/low graphics game, grab it. If you're willing to take a chance or very interested and have some extra cash, get the new one. There's an obvious 3rd choice, but I just can't say it, because I loved the original too much.

Not sure I'd want to read any book written in crayon, but I get your point!

£7.99 is a lot easier to explain than £39.99 especially with November's releases coming up. Not sure what I'm going to do at this point.

Where is that deal still running? Origin was doing it as a promo, but it ended last Friday.

Be warned, the platforming in the original is not good. The combat is actually worse. I love Madness Returns to death, but the original's gameplay was pretty bad.

It's not a deal, it's a code that comes with the box itself (so any new game comes with it), trust I certainly wasn't expecting it when I bought it ;)

Defending Alice Madness Returns: It's a brilliant game, at least imo, and there's enough people like me vehemently defending it in the face of some harsh reviews to at least make one think "heh, this game is actually pretty divisive, it obviously strongly appeals to certain people"

Is that based on PC or PS3 gaming?

Considering that the game is a decade old and that 3D platformers tend to age horribly, I wouldn't say it's that bad...

Is this just for physical copies/consoles? I was thinking of getting the game on Steam...

Well if Alice Madness Returns is getting harsh reviews despite its platforming being god tier, I tremble to know how original Alice would fare under the same scrutiny, only thing I see that it has done better then the sequel is that...the ending is happier? xD

I'm fairly sure it's physical copies/consoles only alas. *checks steam version* Yeh, steam version doesn't come with it I'm afraid :|

The normal uk price should be 29.99£ in most places

That's an understatement. I haven't played the new console port, but the original was nearly unplayably bad. The visual design was amazing, and it was a ton of fun to just wander through the levels to see how they re-envisioned the characters, but the platforming was painful at best, and the combat was tedious. After the first couple levels I just turned on god mode to avoid having to reload, and after another couple levels I ended up also setting up a macro to toggle noclip on and off so I could skip some of the worse jumping sections. It's a great world to wander around in and look at stuff, but it's a pretty crappy game.

Ah, well, if they think that this minor setback will stop me from buying this game then THEY ARE WRONG! >:)

I actually played it on PC recently, and I have to say it hasn't aged well. There is a LOT of platforming, which can get very frustrating, especially if you struggle with some areas and have to reload over and over. Don't know if they've inplemented a checkpoint system in this new one.

The only thing it's really got going for it is it has bosses (of which the new Alice has none, bar the final battle), and some of the level concepts are cool (though ancient and blocky to look at by today's standards. Really, if you want to play it, I'd do what other people suggest and pick up the new game on sale one day. The new game is very similiar, only much prettier. Sometimes.

Then the sequel should be straight up your alley Nalgas, it's platforming and combat are spot on and Alice now controls like a dream ^^

I'm glad to hear it, this game totally deserves every good PR and sale it can get :)

Err...I grew up almost only playing 3D platformers, and I'd say most of the ones I played on the N64 still hold up (at least gameplay-wise). This is based on my time with the original on the 360, though. I never played the original on PC (3D platformers on the PC just seems strange to me). I don't know what changes were made, but I figured the view of a console player would be more helpful than a PC player (since he's on the PS3). You have to do a lot of aiming in the original, and the controls for that on consoles are very hard to pin down. I can tell that part of the game was just meant for mouse control.

That's based on the 360, actually. I'm gonna go back and finish it, but right now I want the better experience (which is Madness Returns).

Yeah, I've been hearing that those parts of the game are much, much better than in the original, so I'll probably check it out at some point when I can actually afford to. It sounds like it still has some issues of its own, but it's hard for me not to like the things it does right.
