Ammo rationing at Wal-Mart as panic buying sweeps US

There's a gun store in my town right on the main road. On the sign is the ominous tag, "Get 'em while you still can."

Now, look, there's no plausible reason to think that Obama is going to take away our guns or ammunition, but people within the firearm industry are going to feed those irrational fears to fuel the huge swell in sales. Fanning the flames to keep their water boiling, so to speak.

Only if you think he lies to pretend to be more for gun control than he really is. He would also have to have flip-flopped since last time he voted on it as a senator.

Obama's stated position is for the Assault Weapons Ban. Anyone who understands gun technology and use knows that AWB's only practical purpose is to screw gunowners. The only logically consistent thing with that is to make more laws, possibly under different excuses, to screw gunowners.

I never thought I'd see the day when the USA runs out of bullets but wow..this is some really scary stuff. Not merely because the the US is facing a bullet shortage but the fact that it's causing a panic.

I for one understand the second amendment and the reasons behind it but surely, unless everyone in America is going hunting I don't see the reason for panic, let alone why the gun-industry people have to title such a thing as "Obama Rush".

Unless the dead start rising I think that this is a bit overrated and hardly calls for a civilian panic. Or am I missing something?.

Yes, you are. Panic is an irrational mental state driven by fear. The article doesn't talk about panic at all. It talks about "panic buying". Panic buying is a loose term for a phenomenon which does not require any actual panic, fear or irrational behavior to occur. See e.g. the definition on Wikipedia.

I doubt the OED definition of panic is applicable in this situation but as you said, panic is an irrational thing. And in this article I see things that reflect people who seem to act/say things in a panicked sense.

The mere act of "panic buying" or "ammo rationing" to a certain degree involves the state of been in a panic/anxiety situation. My whole point is that even if it isn't a medical-panic situation, on a social level it seems to remarkably mimic panicked behavior. No, it may not be the "wave-your-arms-about" hysteria panic depicting a zombie invasion but there is an undertone of concern among these people. A concern that is driving them to "panic buy" the ammunition and that itself is a symptom panicking. It may be unsubstantial- but it's a panic nonetheless.

It's just like selling booze in grocery stores. Anyways, you can buy a box of ammo, but what are you gonna do with it if you don't have a gun? Wal-Mart sells rifles which are used for hunting. Stores that sell handguns have to be specially licensed, like a sporting goods store.

From a position of power, they will attempt to enact legislation that fit there lifestyle and those of similar lifestyles which i call "the clique." What isn't understood is that most people don't share the same views about guns/tobacco/etc... so their opinions aren't considered with enthusiasm, instead they are discarded as rantings by gun-toting rednecks. They still do, or at least the Wal-Mart I used to go to still sells a few small-bore rifles and shotguns in addition to ammo.

FWIW, pistol and rifle ammo is only sold behind the counter - you have to be 21 to purchase pistol rounds and 18 for rifle/shotgun rounds. I know buying ammo from Wal-Mart sounds crazy, but they do (or did) have good prices on some of it. I used to buy my .40 from them before ammo dried up, $24 or so for a box of 100. I still go there for birdshot when I go shoot skeet.

There is no need to panic unless the world is literally running out of the raw materials needed to manufacture bullets, then the panic is completely unnecessary. The democrats don't want to take guns away, the crazy liberal zealots do. I may be liberal myself, but I really don't see the need to take weapons away from upstanding citizens, I also don't see why the gun nuts would be in such a panic over their own paranoia.
