An Egyptian Man Plans to Fight, and Maybe Kill, a Lion

"An Egyptian man who proclaims to be the "strongest man in the world" believes that fighting, and perhaps killing, a lion would help fix his nation's embattled economy and tourist trade.

Al-Sayed al-Essawy, a 25-year-old from the northern Delta region of Egypt, tells the popular Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper that he was inspired to do something positive for the country's economy in the days following the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, and that he believes ?the world will flock to see the Egyptian man who defeated a lion with his bare hands.?

"I discovered my incredible strength at the age of 13, and, almost immediately afterwards, promised myself that, one of these days, I would fight a lion," says al-Essawy, whose fight is reportedly scheduled for June 25. "If America, or any other country, had a man with the ability to combat the strongest creature on the planet, they would properly promote him, and use his strength to their advantage. He would become a worldwide phenomenon, and people would come from their countries just to see him. This is what I want to do for my country." Though al-Essawy insists he does not intend to kill the animal, he adds, "If it comes down to either me or him, I will have to kill him.""


I honestly can't tell if this is real or not. It's been reported in too many newspapers to be a satirical piece, but is so over the top that I don't know what to think of it. I like to believe that this guy exists but plans to rack up enough media attention and then go "oops, people don't like cruelty to animals, so I won't do it. I could though."

On the other hand, if he actually goes through with it, he could actually succeed in increasing tourism and attention. Seriously. If millions of people tune in to football, then image how many people will watch this? Make it Pay-Per-View and their financial crisis is over. Thoughts?

EDIT: By the way, I'm all for having life goals, but if you're 13 and promise yourself that you will one day fight a lion, you don't need to keep that particular promise. We won't think any less of you.

Kill a lion, just because he has this stupid complexion? You know what, fuck him. I hope he dies and has his testicles eaten. Yeah, animal cruelty is 'really' going to support trade. Sorry sir, but I exist in the realm of 'reality' and it just so happens in today's world such acts are simply taboo. But you know what? Who am I kidding. If the lion kills this dumb fucker due to him clearly being conceited then there'll probably be a bounty on the 'wicked' Lions. Because humans can never pay the consequences for their actions own actions. Instead I have to exist in this stupid fucking world with stupid fucking people that basically put animals in a place where they have to fight for their lives . . . and if they survive we kill them anyway. So again, fuck this man.

Now, usually when people do questionable shit I don't condemn them. If someone gets hit by a train I won't say something like 'What a stupid fucking moron, how could he not see the train? He deserved to die!' No, instead I usually defend these people and say that maybe something beyond my own understanding happened. But here I just have to draw the line. If someone pursues a stupid act with a stupid excuse that includes harming another creature (and will probably spark a fucking mass Lion cull if the creature actually ends up, you know, living.) Then I have no sympathy for them, I have absolutely no support for them, and I hope he gets torn down faster then you can say 'Simba!'

And a clarification -

I'm not a moron, I know what lions are. They are agressive dangerous creatures that are probably five times worse then Hyenas. (Despite Hyenas having a worse reputation for no good reason) I Just don't feel it justifiable to kill one simply because of some stupid complexion. And yes, this man clearly has a complexion. If he really thinks a stupid act of cruelty is going to attract good media then he's got another thing coming.

So in short I'm against it. P You all must be surprised to hear that)

If it is real the man is delusional. Instead of flocking to Egypt to see him people would look him up on the internet, read about him for 5 minutes, say "that's cool" and leave it at that.

After reading the whole article I see that he is doing this as more of a political thing. What the fuck makes him think that people from the west are going to come to Egypt for this when he is portraying them as the enemy. The differance is, how many of these guys were trained to handle large, dangerous animals?

I'd imagine if this guy is serious about going up against a lion, he's probably going to seriously train for it, rather than going at it due to his experience with "punching and kicking dogs" like he says.

To put it into perspective, while he eventually did get killed swimming with Manta Rays, look at some of the stuff Steve Irwin pulled off during his long career. He was able to wrestly Crocs and Gators by knowing exactly how to approach and hold them. I've seen people who handle big cats for movies and such do the same thing.

Sure if the guy goes up against a wild lion in a cage and tries to punch and kick it, he's dead. If the guy goes up against a Lion from a zoo or donated... a fairly domesticated one, and goes about it the right way, yeah... I can see it being done. Steve Irwin could have killed a lot of the animals he handled, but he didn't because that wasn't what he was all about. The guy would just need to learn how to approach it the right way from someone who handles big cats I'd imagine.

lol no. Manta rays aren't very dangerous. You are more in danger of getting killed when one jumps into your boat and knocks you out and overboard, which has and does happen if very rarely. Irwin was killed by a Black Stingray. These things are very different. Black Stingrays are bottom feeders and have barbs, Manta's are pelagic filter feeders which aren't violent, either defensively or aggressively.

Also a domesticated lion isn't a 'real' lion in the way he is presenting it to be. The article says he bought one for $4000 so it probably will have been domesticated.
