The thing about this is that it makes for a tough time for whoever's writing the story. Fact is, a story has to have a protagonist with a flaw, and that flaw has to be fixed near the end in a moment of revelation and an action that intensely solidifies this new perspective; a point of no return, if you will. If a character is evil, there is not much of this to be had (except, of course, unless he realizes his evil ways and turns good at the end).

Fact is, either this would simply be a simple simulator for terrible deeds (which would not be a good thing for gaming in the eye of the public, and will hopefully never be done), or it will have a very backwards and not-very-good story. I'm saying no.

anyways I think in one of the books I read they made it sound like some of the other Spartans survived the battle, can't remember which one right now, may have been first strike or maybe Ghosts of Onyx, I haven't read them in a year or two so my memory is a bit fuzzy. anyways sorry once again for the misunderstanding.
Does to me too. Like in the book that takes place right before halo 1, one sec . .
I believe George (at least i think that's his name) was said to have "died" by floating off into space. He could still be living even as the normal games move on. Never said one way or another if he dies.

I meant more like an FPS where you fight the good guys, maybe even lose in the end.
Why would you want to play a game where you are doomed to fail from the start?
Ask the people eagerly awaiting Halo Reach.
No joke. Guess what'll happen in the end. Just guess. Its definitely not cake.
In the end, you'll have... reached your goal?

And yeah, try Postal 1&2. It's the only evil fps series I know. You can pee on people and then kick them while they're vomiting. Then you set them on fire, chop off their heads with a shovel and play football with their still-burning skull.

Like Saints Row (2) for example? Technically you play as the guy who wants to take over the city.

You basically kill the leader of the other gangs, so you take their share of the drug profit or whatever.
Even if you aren't doing the main missions, you can still steal, commit insurance fraud (really), street race, kill random civilians, get drunk, invade a police station (not recommended, specially while drunk), buy illegal guns from the black market, trespass on private property, mug people, start a gang war, etc etc. Think you get the point.

Just wanted to back you up :) Fun game, morally bankrupting, not the best story either.

i think that could have a great story for a game. not to mention OBVIOUSLY you wouldnt know your going to fail from the begining.

How can I say it?? I LOVE games where you can be really really bad. To me, they are the best and the most fun. I think I own every game that lets you play evil. Wish there were more.

I would love to play as an evil protagonist. I would be a nice change of pace.

Peruse the Video Games section of this page for some examples, though I can't verify the accuracy of all of them. To prevent this from being just TV Tropes whoring, I will also recommend Prototype. Just... wow.
Noooooooooooo!!!!! You've started it again!!! I may never leave!

Alex Mercer in [Prototype]. The only choice between good and evil in that game is whether you avoid collateral damage, or revel in it.

Sure, the main character is sympathetic to his sister. But he's completely unrepentant and evil. I realized how evil he was when I noticed that at some point in the game, every single mission had more civilian casualties than 9/11.

It's telling that one of the game's harder achievements is to finish it while "only" devouring 10 civilians. You can kill as many as you want, but you're only allowed to tear apart and consume a max of 10. That's the closest to Good you'll encounter in [Prototype].
lol i remember in that game i would just eat a soldier disguise as him jump in a tank and run over civilians and i would see how much civilian casualties i could get
