"Could Activision mess it up? Sure, but if they focus on maintaining high game quality, fresh story-lines, and online multiplayer, then I don't see an obvious reason for the franchise to decline."
Huh, that's interesting:
Call of Duty
Call of Duty: United Offensive
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One
Call of Duty 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (plus NDS port)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
UPCOMING: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: World at War (plus NDS port)
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Finest Hour
Call of Duty: Roads to Victory
Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized
Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies 1 and 2
Call of Duty: The War Collection
That's 16 games (plus a repack). How many of those are really good?
I think at this point it's safe to say that high game quality has little to do with the popularity of the series.

Next they're going to predict that the sun will rise tomorrow.

I mean seriously, what's the point of this? Why would anyone compare Guitar Hero to Call of Duty? Might as well start talking about how apple sales aren't a good indication how baseball bats are doing.

If they over saturate the market of course they will fail. Cod has reached it's peak in sales, so it can only go down from here. I'm pretty sure Microsoft once said the same about Halo.
I don't know if it's reached it's peak in sales. I know people who didn't game before specifically go out and buy a console just to play Modern Warfare 2. They had no other games and weren't interested in anything else.

Please stop calling those videogame astrologers "analysts". You insult true analysts everywhere.

No way! Call of Duty, that series that made billions with their last game, is going to remain popular!? INCON-FRICKIN'_CEIVABLE!
This is not news. This will likely never be news. I feel bad for Andy Chalk for having to write this down to let us all know what we already knew.

Wait a minute: Hunting games and Extreme Sport Games still exist to this day! My family bought a Big Buck Hunter before Christmas and another for Christmas... I don't like them, but they hardly seem to have Died Out.

OT: Yeah, Guitar Hero and Rock Band have been milked to death unfortunately. Hopefully the Music Game's industry will regrow, but the main problem that the 2 companies (Harmonix and Red Octane) had were they were One trick Ponies. All they could (and can) Produce is Music Based Games. Even if Call of Duty started tanking, Treyarch (And the other company) could easily move on to another project that wouldn't necessarily be an FPS. But that's the problem with Harmonix, they make Music Games and Music Games alone. They need to branch out and make games that don't deal with songs.

Why use such a derivative phrase such as strip-mining when abusing, savaging or riding into the ground are available?

Mr. analyst person, would you say a good use for analysts would be to to "hit it and quit it"? No... well, that would be because of the number of your friends lost.

Perhaps having a modicum of humanity for all the GH people that have had their lives ruined might be a successful, risk-averse strategy?

It will suffer the Tony Hawk. Be good, then innovate and be great (Underground, and think they hit that with CoD4), then gradually get worse but still decent, then have to horrid flops and die.

I still don't get why COD gets such a fanatic following. I mean I played COD2 which was a fine game with fun online. Modern warfare to me was pretty boring and I never bought another COD. I have friends that have but every time I see game footage or them playing it just looks like a re skin of Modern warfare with really nothing interesting or innovative added in. I obviously must be missing something that makes it so amazing and of course this is all my opinion. I have nothing against people that like call of duty, its just a game. I'm just perplexed by the staggering cult following it has.

Uhhh, I realise it will last longer, but I don't think anyone will consistently buy CoD for another 10 years, especially now it's going Pay2Play. It has to burn out eventually.

Really analyst? Because I give the series two or three more years before over saturation kills it for at least a while.

Well from my point of view CoD has already been screwed since they removed dedicated servers on the PC version or the micky mouse crap with black ops.

This comment from the article annoyed me:
"then I don't see an obvious reason for the franchise to decline."

Well done for stating the bleeding obvious, it nots going to be the obvious reason is it? Its going to be some ramdom game from a smaller hungrier devloper that brings something new to party like the orginal CoD did against medal of honor series when it was top of the WWII FPS pile.

No shit.
Although GH and COD are quite similiar for me anyways
-Boring after about a week.
-Only play them at parties after that.
-And I didnt see what all the fuss was about with either of them

Wasn't Rock Band started by the developers of the original Guitar Hero (Harmonix). They left the franchise for another company (EA) and reinvigorated the genre with innovation (more instruments!?!).

This seems surprisingly familiar to what is happening with Infinity Ward/Respawn. The developers become creatively stunted by the greed of the publishers and set out to create a new IP.....only time will tell how THAT plays out

Too bad,... I was hoping that the COD sales would decline just enough to give Activision and Treyarc the kick in the pants needed to get them to change up the formula, and start innovating for once...

We need a documentary showing the migration of the CoD fanboy base moving annually from one mediocre yearly release of the franchise to another. Oh and it will be voiced by Morgan Freeman. Along the way they'll clash with the Bieber fangirls just to make it interesting...just saying.

They'll just keep bleeding and bleeding it,i doubt they'll stop it for awhile. Ad with Cod's fanbase, they'll buy anythig if it has "Call of Duty" in the title
