I nominate the Mass Effect series for best in-game music. Although I think the soundtrack from Deus Ex comes in at a close second.

Actually, my favourite track for a game has to be Suteki da Ne from FFX. Though I've always enjoyed the music from the Final Fantasy games, this really grabbed my attention when I first started the game, and I find it so mournful and soulful, expressing the emotions in the game really well.

Few games have 'in game music' in the sense you mean.

Sticking to the criteria, Vampire the Masquerade bloodlines. I have a couple of Chiasm albums thanks to that game.

Ignoring the criteria.. Thief: The Dark Project. It's the first time I remember feeling like the music composer had actually played the game..

You made two copies of this thread.

OT: I'd have to say either Need for Speed Most Wanted or Hot Pursuit 2K10.
Im sorry my friend but NFSU had the best sound track out of all Need for Speed games.

Having said that I think Heroes of Might and Magic 3 had the best music.

I'm sorry, but this is not up for debate.

Halo 2 has a damned close second, but I just have to give it to Mass Effect 2. The music just did everything right. Watch that goddam video and tell me you don't suddenly feel better.

EDIT- Christ, screw people who disable embedding. Different video selected.

Double Edit- Ah, damn, just saw that last bit in the OP. Alright then, Stalker series wins. The songs those dudes play at the campfires really just sets the mood perfectly. not gonna take out the above video because it's too awesome.

I agree with Fallout, the brilliant juxtaposition basically floored me the first time I heard it over the sounds of me blasting a ghoul's brains out. It's thanks to that game that I got into Jazz and the Rat Pack.

I always like to imagine that Fallout takes place years after Dr. Strangelove.

Funny how people like their OSTs so much they don't even care about the topic. So coming back to that, I thought the music in The Saboteur was really great. The way it would sound like an old radio and slowly fade into good quality when you got in the car was a really nice touch and I found myself spending alot of time in the Moulin Rouge but then again that also had some other attractions. the music really nailed the atmosphere perfectly and there's also a great bit at the end when a nazi plays the piano. Really haunting stuff.

have to say Tony Hawk's Pro skater 4 for the epic mix of decent rock and punk ^^

For original soundtrack i'm going to have to go with morrowind.

I love the music in Dynasty Warriors 7 especially Wu's Battle of Chibi and Jin's Capture of Chengdu.
Such awesome music.

Jak 1-3. Fantastic music and I love how in Jak II and 3, the music changes if you're walking, in a vehicle, on the Jet Board or equipping the Morph Gun.

Oblivion hands down has the best ambient music in any game I've ever played. Not only is all the music fantastic, but it fits the game perfectly.

That's a really good shout, I hadn't remembered that. I wonder how much the Fallout universe was inspired by Dr. Strangelove...

Actually, going back to my criteria in my OP, I would argue that Tetris would fit the bill. There's no player-character as such, the music in it could only ever be directed at the player and so I'd consider it to be like the in-game radios from GTA and Fallout...

Or am I being too philosophical here?

Chrono Cross has the best score I've ever heard in a game, bar none.

Yes times a million.

This one is one of my favorites

YEEEESSSSS!! Another CC fan!! That's one of the best tracks in the game, easily. I actually had Dream of the Shore Near Another World set as my Myspace name for a while back in high school. Let's keep the Chrono love a-flowing!
