Rumors that DICE actually intends to use the money to buy a pack of smokes and a couple cases of beer remain unconfirmed, but no matter how it gets blown, it was a damn fine gesture and I tip my hat to you, Eddie. Well played, sir. Well played.
I'm just guessing here, but it would appear that you too are annoyed at Infinity Ward for dropping dedicated servers on the PC version of MW2?

Personally I think that not only is the guy an idiot for this gesture, but he's making a mountain out of a molehill, and for no reason. I happen to be a PC gamer and a console gamer, and I've never used dedicated servers on any of my PC games. I just can't be bothered with it. If console gamers can get by without a dedicated server on their games, then why do we need to have dedicated servers for PC games that are almost exactly the same in all other respects? There isn't any need. The peer-to-peer functions work just as well as dedicated servers, and when you're actually in the game you'll be playing the same way whether or not you use a dedicated server. Thus it doesn't make much difference in the end which you use. There isn't any need for this fuss over the subject. However, I doubt we've seen the last of this. After all, it seems recently that any time a company makes even the slightest change in the way they develop their games, all hell breaks loose, usually for no reason at all. Now, is anyone up for a game of the L4D2 demo? :)

You do not own a gaming PC or you do not play online with ypur PC because if you had you would certainly
have played on a dedicated server...because they all are dedicated servers.
Perhaps you pirate all your games so you can only use hamachi or something similar but that misses the point.
(another explanation is you simply do not know what a dedicated server is...)

I usually set up servers myself, or I play LAN. My housemates aren't gamers much, but a couple of the guys do occasionally like to play a few rounds of Total War or Halo or Dawn of War or the like. So yes, I do play online. I understand that playing a LAN game isn't the same as actually playing online, but still, I do understand the definition of a dedicated server. Anyway, I usually play peer to peer where possible. There are still games that are online that let you do that on PC, apart from MW2. A good example would be the original Halo, for instance.

I would do the same, but I never intended on buying MW 2. I'm really interested in BC 2 though, so that's where I sink my money :)
HELL YEAH!
THAT game looks awesome, and at least DICE is trying to tide over the PC community before BF3.
though I am slightly disappointed by the likely lake of mod tools in BC2, i don't think it could even run on my medium PC, so I'm grabbing it for the 360, which will also HAVE DEDICATED SERVERS SO IT CAN HAVE MORE THAN A PALTRY 16 PLAYERS

LAN=/=online, P2P can work in LAN, but when the rigs get to be far apart, then there WILL BE LAG, but you seem to host most of your stuff anyway...
Also, have you EVER PLAYED THE BATTLEFIELD SERIES?
THEY ARE BASICALLY ALL DEDICATED SERVERS.
in fact, any game with more than about 16 players essentially needs dedicated servers, as household connections are not consistently good enough for more, but it doesn't sound like you like lots of people, so i guess you are (blissfully?) ignorant.

I'm impressed with Eddie's devotion to his cause. Admittedly, it's a strange cause, but he's devoted to it nonetheless.

Now, I wonder what would happen if everyone who Internet Boycotted or petitioned against a video game did something like this?
We would have Internet Boycotts that actually have greater impact then a reasuring head nod and a "promise" that what the dev is doing wont screw the game completely.

This is diehard boycotting at its finest. I love it. Form a community and hold the money that would go to the dev hostage. I sugest writing letters as the money telling the dev how much money misses them.

Oh the sweet salty tears.

All of my games are indeed 16 player or less. However, this isn't to say that I don't like the idea of playing with lots of people, or indeed dedicated servers themselves. I don't mind them, and if I'm playing a game where I have to use a dedicated server then I'll use dedicated servers, by all means. I simply prefer P2P. No particular reason for it, it's like me saying I prefer choc-chip cookies to ginger snaps. There isn't a particular reason (for the record, I actually prefer ginger snaps). But as it happens, I do want to start playing games in the Battlefield series, but I simply don't have the money right now to buy any of those games. I'd be happy to play dedicated servers though, and I never actually said that I wouldn't play them. I simply prefer P2P. The idea of 64-player online deathmatches, however, definitely appeals to me (I'll take down all those suckers with my trusty sniper rifle ;D).

Kudos to the man. It doesn't matter where he spent his money to. What matters is that he said a big "fuck you, no more" on Activision/Infinity Ward for their dick moves.

DICE, the studio behind Battlefield: Bad Company 2... promised that it would never turn its back on loyal PC gamers.
I would like to direct your attention to the PC version of Battlefield: Bad Company 1.

Wait, I can't find it...
who says the fact that there was no pc version is a bad thing? honestly, probably the only reason i actually liked bad company is because im a whore for the battlefield games. its mp is good, but nowhere near as good as previous battlefield games, and the single player absolutely sucked.
A bad game is better than no game at all. There was a lot of controversy over the decision to not make it for PC.
i do have to disagree there. if its a bad game whats the point of playing it? and if theres no point in playing it then whats the point of it being released? battlefied 2 and 2142 still have quite sizable communities (bf2 especially) and are both much better than bad company was. for any fans of the battlefield games theres not much point in it being released for the pc when two of its predecessors that are much better still have a lot of players (id add in bf1942 and its expansions but their player bases arent that big, still not hard to find servers though). this isnt even going into the mods available for bf2 and 1942.

i was pretty pissed when they said bad company wouldnt be coming out for the pc, but in retrospect i really dont see any need for it to have come out on the pc.

you are very weird player in terms of preferences...
...i suppose the system doesn't hamper anything you like, so your're okay with it, but i LIVE on high population servers, which, as a said in confused partial rage, are impossible via P2P.

All of this controversy happened post-release, before anyone could decide whether the game was good or not. Are you suggesting that DICE didn't release BFBC for PC because they knew it was a bad game? That they were actually doing us a favour by not releasing it?

My point remains. It's pretty hypocritical of DICE to skip the release of BFBC1 on PC, then promise they'd never turn their backs on PC gamers a year or two later.

Hmm MW2: 9v9, has peer 2 peer
BF 12v12, has support for dedicated servers

and if im not wrong some ISP's block P2P traffic (here in Australia), and not to mention the fact we want our low pings and talk to people from our country insted of some random Korean (i jsut picked random country dont rage) joins with a ping of 187 and just warps across the screen due to awsome lag!
And most people dont have fast internet in australia meaning all australian based servers will be SH1T

WHere is my BF3 btw

It's one damn function, dedica- wait, let me grab my flameshield real quick... There we go- dedicated servers aren't even that great IMO. Took too long to find a game, whether it was because I didn't like what the server was running or it was full. MW2 is much better off this way.
