Because I'm not going to the trouble of responding to the crapload of posts I'll need to, I'll just go through my usual pro-anime stance to save time:
90% of everything is crap or at least uninteresting, but it's worth it for the good movies, games, books, and yes, anime. I'm fine ignoring the tons of meh stuff for the Darker Than Blacks, the Baccano's, the Haruhi's, the Eva's, the Kino's Journey's, and even simply well-executed things like Nanoha.
While there are definitely shared art-style characteristics, it's by no means the same: there are plenty of things with stronger stylization like Gurren Lagann, not to mention subtler differences. I think other, more knowledgeable posters illustrated this point better.
If I let fanbases determine my liking of something, I'd give up music and purge anything remotely WH40k-related from this world.
Robot Princess Bubblegum, while a funny parody, by no means presents reasons to stay away from anime other than the things most fans already avoid or enjoy because they're that absurd.
For the people who think they're making a witty point by mentioning Japan's WWII status (nobody in this thread, but I've seen those jerks), do you also hate German things?
Because I like anime doesn't mean I hate western animation; quite the contrary, I got into anime because of my pre-existing liking for cartoons and, to an extent, comic books (never a huge fan, but I've read some classic Superman and Spiderman, along with some Daredevil). For fuck's sake, I consider the earlier Spongebob shorts to be legitimate modern classics, not to mention my love for The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Futurama, South Park, and Arthur (aka the greatest thing to ever come from PBS).
If you need help finding good series, browse TV Tropes or ask our resident anime fans group. For some starter points, try Kino's Journey or anything by Miyazaki.
