Ahem. It's fine with me if you don't like anime. I'd rather people simply said they disliked the style, rather than making broad generalizations that it's all gratuitous sexual exploitation and blood. As long as you can respect why some people do like anime, there's no reason for you to have any reason to like it yourself. I think it's a shame you're missing out on some great shows and films because you dislike an art style, but it's all subjective in the end.

I'll also admit that a lot of anime is bad. Like, really bad. Considering 60 percent of animation in the world comes from Japan, the amount of popular anime is really small in comparison to everything else produced. For every good anime, there's about 5 that vary between 'bad' and 'meh'. It's simply how it goes with any medium, really.
I simply dislike the style. I'd probably enjoy death note if it wasn't anime.
Fair enough, there is a live action version. Its not quite the same story wise, but has a similar feel.

I enjoy anime very much. I watched a lot of it as a kid. While I think most mainstream anime has gotten really dull, except for two in my opinion. One involving genocide, alchemy, the 7 sins, chimeras, and a conspiracy. The other involving a note book that causes death, the letter L, opinions about law and justice, a false god, and sweets. Oh and I guess Bleach is average.
(Note, that I just think mainstream anime and manga need to know when to end. I liked a lot of them when they 1st started. After the peak of the series though... it gets boring and tedious to sit through.)
hello, have you seen pokemon

However, to judge such a large medium like that and say it's all the same really isn't fair. I'm not going guarantee a lot of anime wont aggravate you. Some of it still irritates me, with their excessive annoyance and cuteness, however I think I'm starting to get desensitized to stuff like that. Anime still has much to offer besides that. Plus, if you care enough to read the manga you can get into some really amazing and deep stuff.

I'm not going to force my opinion on you, but I really think if you take a bit more time you will find something you enjoy.

I think most anime is aimed at children and young teenagers up to the age of 16. Being aged 19, i feel a bit too old for a lot of anime because the characters are high school students and it deals with themes typical of teenage fiction. That said, i really do like the animation style, it's brilliant.

Some anime strikes me as being a bit too strange. Take Hetalia for instance, i watched most of the 1st series because, as a history student, i was interested in seeing how the author portrayed all these different nations. Very cool and original idea behind Hetalia, but man it's strange. Another example could be the much acclaimed Code Geass. Code Geass was set in a world conquered by Brittania, in all it's imperial pomp and glory- yet it wasn't a comedy, yet the setting for the anime is...absurd? If Code Geass was a comedy i would have probably got into it.

That all said, i love the art style which goes with anime, and there are quite a few anime's i do like. Blood Plus, i love Black Lagoon, and seen and liked a few episodes of Cowbody Beebop and Trigun.

Also, i shall ask this question: ARE THERE ANY MORE ANIME'S WHICH LIKE BLACK LAGOON? If so, please recommend some!!!

I have a severe addiction to anime, it's a medical disorder I tell you!

In all seriousness fullmetal alchemist is an amazing starting anime (english voices are good aswell) that would be my only bet to change my mind, as it is down to earth (ish) and uses more relate-able characters, english voices and doesn't really go over the top compared to other animes.

EDIT: Ohhh, I get a chance to say this now.

I believe there are two mindsets for anime:

Animated Movie
and
Japanese Cartoon

If you sit on the top one watching anime is not problem. However sitting on the bottom one means that you will always see the cartoon side and it will distort your view of it. Just my take on it :). (Btw my comma key has stopped working sorry)

Uhm... condescending tones are a big no-no. That's partly why I hate anime so much. The animation style is great and looks awesome, and the stories are somewhat ok, characters are also great, but the community behind it... it's just not nice. People who like anime always are greater-than-thou type of guys that think they are so great.

Oh I was under the impression that your whole stance was "It's animation from Japan and therefore it can screw off." I lived with a roommate like that and it still gets to me. Sorry if I came off as condescending but there's really no reason to just plain out hate an entire country's animation industry just because of the fans.

But you've got to understand that just saying there isn't any good anime is an entirely false statement. Regardless of the medium there's always going to be something in it that anyone will like, they just haven't found it yet. I use the Miyazaki movies as an example because they aren't just examples of great anime, they're examples of great films period.

You've got to admit you came off as condescending too. :/

Also, one last thing. I noticed you like Scott Pilgrim which is essentially Canadian manga. This confuses me considering Scott Pilgrim's chock full of anime references.

I don't hate it because it's from Japan, I'm not Cuban you know.

I might have gone a bit off the top saying that there isn't any good anime out there. What I meant maybe was 'I don't like any'. Because I don't.

Scott Pilgrim is not manga in my eyes, it's just a tiny-sized graphic novel. And there yourself said it, it's full of anime references, but it's not anime. And I won't admit anything.

I would say "I haven't seen any good anime," would've been better. ;)

It's not that you don't like anime. I could care less about that. It's when anyone says that an entire genre of any animation is bad that I draw the line and start getting testy, which I blame on myself being an animation major. I was about to lay into the guy that said the same thing about Western animation until someone else did it for me.

If you keep an open mind I guarantee you'll find something you like. I'm not saying you have to but it may lead to you finding something cool.

*Face Palm* Yes I have seen Pokemon actually. It was one of the 1st anime's I've ever watched actually. I don't really understand what this has to do with my post. Pokemon is a mainstream anime that I don't like anymore. It didn't age well.

Because I'm not going to the trouble of responding to the crapload of posts I'll need to, I'll just go through my usual pro-anime stance to save time:

90% of everything is crap or at least uninteresting, but it's worth it for the good movies, games, books, and yes, anime. I'm fine ignoring the tons of meh stuff for the Darker Than Blacks, the Baccano's, the Haruhi's, the Eva's, the Kino's Journey's, and even simply well-executed things like Nanoha.

While there are definitely shared art-style characteristics, it's by no means the same: there are plenty of things with stronger stylization like Gurren Lagann, not to mention subtler differences. I think other, more knowledgeable posters illustrated this point better.

If I let fanbases determine my liking of something, I'd give up music and purge anything remotely WH40k-related from this world.

Robot Princess Bubblegum, while a funny parody, by no means presents reasons to stay away from anime other than the things most fans already avoid or enjoy because they're that absurd.

For the people who think they're making a witty point by mentioning Japan's WWII status (nobody in this thread, but I've seen those jerks), do you also hate German things?

Because I like anime doesn't mean I hate western animation; quite the contrary, I got into anime because of my pre-existing liking for cartoons and, to an extent, comic books (never a huge fan, but I've read some classic Superman and Spiderman, along with some Daredevil). For fuck's sake, I consider the earlier Spongebob shorts to be legitimate modern classics, not to mention my love for The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Futurama, South Park, and Arthur (aka the greatest thing to ever come from PBS).

If you need help finding good series, browse TV Tropes or ask our resident anime fans group. For some starter points, try Kino's Journey or anything by Miyazaki.

Well I think Japan is so far east its west so...weast! Though anime got me into thinking about Japanese culture ya know. In case america is in some kinda hell, Japan would be a good plan B.
