I don't hate anime but I think deep down I believe everyone who watches it secretly wants to tentacle rape a school girl or something...so I stay away from it. Also I don't like the art style generally. Also everyone I know who likes anime has the worst taste in books and movies in general so I don't really trust their advice on what to read.

I might read something one day, if someone can suggest something that doesn't involve tentacle rape.
*Facepalm*
Really?
I love Anime but, im actually against Fanservice and completely against Hentai(Anime Porn).
Tentacle Rape is not a Common thing in Anime, just Hentai.

Rurouni Kenshin, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Bleach, Dragon Ball, Full Metal Alchemist, Tegami Bachi, and Case Closed are all Great Manga that have little to No Fanservice.
And i promise they don't have Tentacle Rape either.

It also gets on my nerves that a person will ignore a western animated show or film or even a live-action one and watch something anime just BECAUSE it's anime. Which, seeing as being Japanese and animated is no guarantee for quality, frankly astounds me.
I just have to respond to this one. WHAT good western animation? Outside of The Simpsons, Family Guy/American Dad (which aren't all that great, but I digress), and Transformers: Beast Wars, just what good western animated shows were you referring to? I love me some NCIS and other live shows as much as the next guy, but the quality of western animation is just...horrid. Have you SEEN what they did to Cartoon Network? And Nick-whatever? Crap like Spongebob and Blue's Clues is what turned me to anime in the first place.
Quality western animation, eh?

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Megas XLR
Phineas and Ferb
Adventure Time
The Spectacular Spider-Man
(to get a little older we have...)
Beast Wars
Swat Kats
Wacky Races
Johnny Quest
X-Men
Spider-Man: Unlimited
Thundercats
Avengers: United They Stand (even if it was only 13 episodes...)

and that was just to name a few.

Anyways, OT: A lot fo different anime try vastly different animation syles. I mean, you can't honestly claim that Spirited Away, Code Geass, Dragonball Z, Shin-Chan and Gatchaman all use the same art style. Put simply, I can't force ya to like anime, but I hope you'll look around and find something that DOES spark your interest.
ok i think this deserves a quote i like almost all the shows you listed but adventure time just disturbs me along with alot of crap on cartoon network. now i must ask this you do realize that all but 4 of the shows you listed are no longer running? now dont mistake me for just a fan boy i like certen anime and hate others but i think we can agree (with a few exceptions) that current western animation is realy bad. now this does not include movies pixar is very good at animating:)
OT i would sugest if your open to trying anime to go slow dont go out and get something thats just wierd and stay the hell away from hentai(animated porn) now id recomend outlaw star (the anime my avatar is from:) its funny and has a pretty nice art stile or princess moninoke its by the same guy who did spirted away and it inspired the head of pixar to make animated movies hope this helps:)
Yeah, sadly there aren't TOO many good western animated shows that aren't comedy, which sucks, as I'd prefer action... I love anime, myself. My bed room is full of anime posters, but I'm not some weeaboo who thinks something's better JUST because it's Japanese. I do hate Pixar, though. Great animation, but the characters, stories and such are all crap... Except the Incredibles, that was cool. Also, it was Hayao Miyazaki that did PRincess Mononoke and Spirited Away, along with things like Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro.

My problem with most western cartoons nowadays is that they have no real unifying concept. Take Spongebob for example. All it is is him running around acting like a total retard with no real task in mind other than cooking burgers and catching jellyfish and annoying that squid guy. Back in the day, though many of them never completed their mission, the cartoon heroes of the 90's had some sort of objective, whether it be defending the world from evil, or trying to catch a crafty roadrunner. The problem with a lot of anime is that they were created to soon. Most of the anime out there are based off of manga and often times they are given anime much to early in the manga's existence which leads to the creation of filler while they wait for the writer to advance the story. Because the plot of the filler is so terrible people stop watching which causes the anime to be canceled. Then of course there is the voice acting, I have dropped entire an entire series simple because I could not stand one of the female characters screaming "Oni-chan" at the top of her lungs every five seconds. But if the story is compelling enough I will bare with all the annoyingly high pitched voices and see it through to the end.

I hate it so far too, I can't really put my finger on why exactly apart from one very common reason (most of it seems frankly, just 'strange'. and not in ways that are amusing. Maybe I'm just not japanese or nerdy enough to get it)

Anyway I am open to having my mind changed obviously, but so far all Anime I've watched I haven't liked so I've naturally lost interest in actively seeking out Anime to change my mind. I'm just indifferent now.

It's hard to convince someone to like anime if he doesn't even know why he hate it in the first place. If it's something fundamental, like the usually lower frame rate (anime commonly made in 12 frames a sec and change frame rate base on the action) or the liberal use of camera angles and directing styles, or the non matching lips syncing, or just the problem of reading subtitles, then it doesn't matter how many different anime we recommend it wouldn't change anything. The only thing I can say now is probably that anime is like an acquire taste. If you watch enough you "might" starting to like it.

What have you seen? I'm sure I can find something you wouldn't hate. However with no prior knowledge of your tastes I can automatically recommend to everyone the English dub of Baccano. A 1930s gangster show with some train robbery and a little bit of alchemy thrown in. Those that say all anime is bad have clearly not seen this show.

I'll just post a part I consider great as example.

I think a lot of the hatred for anime stems from you millennials, your generation pretty much grew up seeing nothing but anime since the pokemon boom, but as for me I was already a teenager when this fascination with anime went on full over drive.

I'm an X-gen, and for a lot of us anime was something different, it had mature rated content something we had never seen in cartoons in previous years, so we got sucked in and pretty much started this fascination.

You see I grew up watching mostly western cartoons from the 80s and prior, and around the late 90s there really wasn't much else to watch.

I grew up watching the usual format of what was expected from cartoons at the time, and anime was a really cool alternative we had never seen before. But of course now that's old news and your generation has really missed out in a lot of good stuff that had come out when western cartoons use to be good.

Now this is the part I hate. Anime is not a medium. It is animation. In Japan, all animation is called anime, because it's Japanese for animation.
*facepalm* Thank you for correcting me. Now I feel stupid.

I love anime. It has a lot of shit but it has it's diamonds. Also: You could say the same thing about every game, movie, book or any other sort of media you can think of.
"Sure there's a million different genres but in the end a video game is a video game and therefore shit."

I cannae see the picture because my work computer is too fail, but am I right in assuming it's the picture that lordlee posted back when he got himself banned? Because I was attempting to find that picture to post but the majority of image hosting sites are blocked so I couldn't find it.
That it is. I saved it as soon as he posted it, and it's come in handy a couple of times.

I love how the anime fanboys try to get you to watch anime when you state that you do not enjoy it, I have similar experiences, and I have only ever liked two anime: Spirited Away, and Tenshi-no (I think thats what it was called).

You can't pick on anime alone necessarily. Based on what you are saying, thousands of movies, games and shows apply as well. But nothing is EXACTLY the same. It appears to me that to me you have other reasons to hate it besides the fact they are "similar." Originally, I was like you, but One Piece became my first real anime and to this day it remains my favorite.

Hey at least your not a complete hater that hates everything including the people that watch anime, to you Sir I give Kudos.

OT: Well sometimes some animes have basically the same plot but that is not true for the majority and the art style are different and usually fit with the genre that you are watching so am not sure why you think they are alike

oh and anything creepy is still creepy even if it isn't anime

I used to despise anime too, back when I was bit of a close-minded dill hole and assumed it was all the same. However, if you can just keep your mind open just a bit, you can discover some rather awesome series.

This is one that I just recently finished and I'd recommend to anyone, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann:

This video doesn't do it justice, but it's still kinda epic.

Well strictly speaking, no not all anime looks the same. There are as many different art styles as there are artists. For example, Bleach does not look the same as Code Geass. To say that all anime looks the same is like saying all Western Animation looks the same which would imply that The Super Hero Squad Show looks the same as Justice League.

You're entitled to your opinion and no one's forcing you to like anime, admittedly there are certain genres of it I can't stand, like the harem animes. I hate those.

I don't watch a lot of Anime, I wasn't impressed with the Death Note anime (I read the manga first) and Bleach was fine before the whole.....Crunchyroll incident. So I only read that manga. and I've started picking up copies of Full metal Alchemist volumes. I'd have to say I'd rather read the manga over watching the anime (although sometimes it's nice to see what they changed or how the scene plays out with motion).

Everyone has subjective dislikes, that's perfectly natural. "Hate", however, entails that you also don't think anyone else should like it, and that they are wrong in doing so, which of course isn't cool.

And nobody likes an entire medium, or even genre. I'd very much like to see[footnote]Actually, I probably wouldn't...[/footnote] the person who liked every single Hollywood production to ever come out. Even "fans" of (some) Animé are almost certain to on the whole dislike/not know more Animé of the totality produced than they like. Unless of course they're complete fanatics who'll proclaim that every line drawn in Japan is always the work of god, but those exist in every "fandom".

And the art styles of something like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni compared to Monster couldn't really be much more different...
