I've been reading the Pandora Hearts Manga and well i have given up figuring out what the hell is going on in this comic. But in Anime terms watch Black lagoon its one of the most awesome series ever made.

I used to like Naruto until I realized I paid for a Shonen Jump and was getting Epic Fight->How I Became a Bad Guy by A.Villan. Sadly it was annoying that every fight scene was mixed with angst.Japanese men are rather sexist showing most women as either weak or dominatrix.

Anime was good until the stories never change.Ever.

From what I can gather the Japanese are disturbingly obsessed with tits. Not in the 'I love tits' way, but in the 'I love my mum's tits' way.
Maybe you should look for something besides incest-themed doujinshi, then...
Not a clue what that is. I was actually looking at the development teams that include the ability in games to waggle tits with your gamepad. And the hentai porn. And the anime (as mentioned) full of sexual tension between family members and small girls in school uniform.

Obviously not all Japanese (at all), but its very weird, especially how integrated it seems to be.

I just see anime as another art style to play around with.
Honest answer is that i suck too much to draw anything realistic.

Anime and the Japanese cultural psyche terrifys me in general

We just don't slide

...brrr...Anime...what a sickeningly messed up thing

Full Metal Alchemist? My friend watched that. Listening to him discuss it with another mate was like watching "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles

It is part of what I like to call the Photoshop Phenomenon. Before computers, scanners, and Photoshop, people with actual artistic talent could draw and illustrate. Now, however, the simple to use Photoshop program will let anyone who can point and click draw an wonderfully detailed digital picture.

There are two things I see in this, the first begin positive. Photoshop has opened up a media available to all of those with little actual drawing skills, so that even they can represent their imagination via an image. However, it's taken away from traditional artists, who suddenly aren't all that a big deal since anyone can now create art. For example, take a look at Deviant Art. Sure, you get great looking digital pictures and artwork, but there's is so damn much of it, and most of it is by people who couldn't even hold a pencil to save their life.

now, how does this apply to anime? Simply, anyone with enough money to put down for animators and equipment can spew out something that is technically anime. Often, this type of anime is bout in numerous quantities by "fanboys" and "fangirls". However, most of it has an unintuitive or cliched storyline, as well as artwork that you see copy and pasted from other such anime. In short, with globalization and capitalism at an all time high, it is quite easy for someone with little to no talent to take their (for lack of a better word) ideas and to apply them to such things as anime.

Let it be known that I do not hate those Photoshop people, but it bugs me a little that traditional art is on the decline.

Really? What do you think is "sickening" and "messed up" about Ghibli's films, such as Spirited Away and Only Yesterday? What about Mamoru Oshii's films, such as Patlabor?
Gah! I forgot about Spirited Away. I like that

But it is still messed up, and I find watching it disturbing, verging on quesy.

It's not just the insanity, even the sombre ones upset me. It's the storylines, the culture surrounding them and the art style. I don't like Anime art styles.

Buh...I don't like them

Well, there is a difference between an artist who's managed to master photoshop and a master photoshopper with no artistic talent. If you can't see the difference there's something wrong.

Anyway.

Whether it's someone who likes it or hates it I always just say that anime are just cartoons. Lion King was awesome right? Well, so is Jin-Roh. But don't expect everybody to like the Saturday morning version of Lilo & Stitch or Green Green TV. And don't even come near something like Totaly Spies or Angel's Tail unless you're really into that kind of stuff.

It's a shame that many anime fans completely lose sight of what someone who isn't 'in the know' would enjoy when they recommend something. Like the tale in the OP, the guy showed you Elfen Lied and Ikki Tousen?! That's some specialist stuff right there. One because of the whole brainwashed 6-8 yr olds thing and the other because of the ripping clothes which are just senseless.

Why the hell would he show you Ikkitousen without warning you that it's one of those things that you watch for the train wreck factor? Elfen Lied was a good one to recommend. You might try Code Geass (Season 1 is better than season 2.), or Monster, Black Lagoon is also good. I really thought Speed Grapher was a neat take on super powers. A certain magical index is nice enough if you don't go into it expecting too much. The main thing I like about it and it's spin-off A certain scientific Railgun is the names given to the characters based on their powers etc.

I don't have the time to go through seven pages of other's ideas, arguments, and recommendations so if anyone mentioned any of these before they're being mentioned again.

I have never been the biggest Anime fan. I watch it when it is on, but that is about it. There was one anime that caught my eye a couple of years ago, back on TechTV when it was still TechTV. Its name is Gad Guard. I don't remember much about it, but it was about these children (naturally) who hold these things that give them giant robots. I only saw the first couple episodes of the first season, so I don't know where to go from there, but it was pretty good.

If anybody knows anything more about the show, or if it is still on anywhere, please let me know.

I also enjoy Helsing, Evangelion (despite the crazy sexual references), Ghost in the Shell, and Death Note. There is still some decent anime out there.

I would hate anime too if i would only have watched Ikkitousen (Battle Vixens for some people)and Higurashi no Naku Koro. Happily this is not the case and there are great anime that i have enjoyed watching. And you're definitely right about only 10% of all the anime being good. The Japanese are really creating some fine BS lately.

sorry i have not read through the whole thread to see if someone has posted about it yet but if you want truly a great anime watch monster or cowboy bebop. firstly cowboy bebop is just excellent in the art music and action departments and is the mile stone for any great anime. and monster has one of the best stories any anime has ever had it is a long anime but is well worth it. its better then most books i have ever read and yet it is not main stream because of the long sections where it is just story and there is hardly any action. but if you want a well presented well thought out and great story anime watch monster i promise you it will be well worth your time or i will punch myself
