My favorite anime series/movies are gundam, appleseed, and robotech. But of course the best is HAMTARO!!!!!
For mentioning Robotech rather than any of the anime it's derived from, you officially hate anime.
What if he put Robotech/SDF Macross, because aside from what he said that is basically 80%of my collection.

To be honest, I can't agree with a lot of the stuff here because I just don't 'get' anime. I don't get how people find anime girls hot when they have weird plugsocket contraptions with ridiculous eyes instead of human faces. I don't get how people can enjoy anime fight scenes because they're just whizz-bang-boom nonsense. One memorable fight scene in Naruto just consisted of one scene of a guy running played over and over, interrupted every ten seconds so somebody could explain what was happening. No joke. I don't know how people can find anime writing exemplary when something crucial must've been lost in translation.

I didn't enjoy Hellsing because of Alucard. He just sucked all the tension out of it. 'Oh here's Alucard, they shot him, yep, he isn't dead, oh he killed them, surprise, roll credits'. Essentially it felt more like an exercise in throwing blood around than a series.

I didn't enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion because, from the way people described it, it was a magical dream machine made of sex and beauty and sculpted out of strawberry cheescake. Frankly I wanted to choke the life out of everyone involved for their quasi-philosophical musing and repeated refrain of 'this guy/girl is messed up'. It's like Supernatural; there's only so much 'oh god life is so bleak my daddy never loved meee' a man can take. Also the series that was meant to reinvent anime had a fucking penguin waddling around. Why? And the last few episodes were just a Powerpoint presentation on more pseudo-deepness.

I could've strained to enjoy Trigun. The idea of an anime protagonist who isn't a blood-crazed psychopath was a nice idea, but again, too much introspection. To leave something implied is to allow the viewer to know the character more deeply on their own terms. To deliver huge unwieldy monologues on everything you ever thought or did is to allow the viewer a bathroom break.

That's my two cents anyway. I've erected my flame-shield, just in case.

Quite an amazing necro. I forgot I had this. On hindsight, I find my English has improved immensely. Though, to reply to a post:

I agree with your point about Hellsing. I've grown tired of a series where the main character can't be killed. But with Evangelion, I find myself attracted to the script. It to me is a subject few films grasp. The script as well was brilliantly crafted. The fact that there was robots and intelligent penguins I can overlook for that fact.

There are a few ones that are more down to earth and less zany. Spice and Wolf, and Kino's Journey (title in Japanese but with Kino in it) are thought provoking and enjoyable for me. I occasionally watch zany ones, if they are a parody of zany ones (example being Ouran High School Host Club) or if the crazy moments are intermittent (Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya). Just some other options to think about.

the last ten years have not spawned an even halfways decent anime, bebop, trigun and ruroni kenshin were the last good ones. everyone else not made by miyazaki(i havent seen ponyo yet but from what iv seen its below par of his usual work) is the same crap over and over. although fairy tale isnt bad as a manga so far. manga has been doing ok in some areas

Well, i've gotta be honest to the OP here. Saying you hate all anime just because you watched a generic one (which inevitable there will be many of) makes just about as much sense as saying you hate all films just because your tired of the usual American blockbuster like Transformers. If you don't put in the effort to find the anime that will suit your tastes then of course you're going to be dissapointed. I too tend to steer clear of the average anime (Naruto, Lucky Star etc) and avoid anything that falls into the Harem genre. If you search hard enough you'll find mature, psychological, serious, experimental etc anime like; 5 Centimetres Per Second, Paranoia Agent, Mushishi, Death Note, Monster, Boogiepop Phantom, Perfect Blue, Ergo Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Cat Soup, Azumanga Daioh, Paparika, Welcome to N.H.K. etc. I'm not defending the anime you watched (whatever it was) or even the average anime, but what i am saying is that it's unfair for you to write off all anime just based on a few that you've seen.

There's good anime, there's bad anime, & there's typically bad anime. The difference between the latter 2 is that bad anime TRIES while typically bad anime is simply aimed at sweaty teens entering puberty. Or is just typical & bad.

I don't even know how I found out about it, but I did & watched Aria recently (Aria The Animation, The Natural, & The Origination, 3 seasons altogether). It's very down-to-earth, peaceful, relaxing, & at some times sad & happy at once. There is no action whatsoever!

i quite liked higurashi actually. i'll admit the first thing you mentioned sounded awful, but higurashi was quite fun to watch, although the second season kind of killed it for me.

i generally go in for dark anime. i cant stand the light hearted stuff, it puts me off really badly. and i dislike the humour attempts in anime, or people getting angry and increasing in size because of it.

and just so you know, yugioh the original series was created before the card game got created. it just seems like a cash-in because 4kids did a bad job of dubbing it.

Good rant.

I tend to treat anime as a big file of fertilizer. Generally it smells, there's too much of it and you wouldn't want to touch it with a 10ft extended bo staff. Sometimes, that filthy stench ridden manure, creates a beautiful blossom of genius or at least some tasty fungi of pleasure.

Personally I tend to let others wade through the much but have enjoyed the following and others (haven't seen Evangellion, yet):

Cowboy Bebop - the rose of the anime pile
Ghost in the Shell - a delicious tuber grown deep the collective swamp of anime and bad sci-fi.
FLCL - the dangerously hallucinogen of that grew of the side of the pile.

So the OP didn't like Ikki Tousen or Higurashi, and therefore all anime is bad. Call the waaambulance already!

Well, there is bad, stupid, action-y stuff, but there is also clever, interesting stuff. Watch

Nausicaa - Very depressing themes and a great ending. Absolutely beautiful presentation.
Spirited Away - Powerful themes and extraordinary presentation. Also, great music
And finally, if you enjoyed those, then you might like this:
Paprika - Clever and post-modernistic, but might be to weird for you. Covers great themes, like rape, homosexuality, and identity. Don't worry, it isn't sick. It covers those themes in a mature way.

I've been for the last year and a half looking for another great anime to watch. I've watched Dragon ball(since kid, Death note, Claymore, Ghost in shell, Trigun, All studio studio ghibli stuff and a few others I can't recall the names or spellings at this time. I've loved them all but recently I cannot find a new great one to watch. Nothing seems to be both mature enough and still have that anime kid feel that studio ghibli gives out. so Can any one please message me with a list of good mature undertone yet still be fun anime to watch I'd be ever so grateful.

What's the difference?, the anime you watched is shit, most of them are. Same with video games, movies, books. The reason most exceptional things stand out is because everything else looks like shit by comparison. I haven't seen a lot of anime, but I have seen a lot of good anime.
Samurai X, Berserk, Gankutsuou, Death Note, these are all good anime. The anime you saw was made by somebody who obviously didn't know how to tell a story, but you can't judge other anime on those. The top grossing film this year(or at least one of them) was Transformers. If somebody who's never seen a movie before watched Transformers and then decided movies were crap would it make any sense. And I'm sorry if I sound like I'm angry, I'm not, it's just that I've seen people insult, under appreciate art, and sometimes even blame it for their problems instead of taking responsibility. Art forms are defined by the pieces that represent their potential not spit on it
