Been mentioned before, and i'll mention it again.
I recommend Hellsing, it's the only one i actually like.
Subbed, Dubbed doesn't matter IMO both are good. Though not all the OVA's are dubbed.

Clannad. This is the anime that will make you cry. I don't care if you've never cried in a show before. I don't care if you maintained a steely expression at your grandma's funeral when you were 9 years old. You will cry in Clannad. It's two seasons long (Clannad and Clannad After Story), it's funny, it's dramatic, it's romantic, and it makes everyone cry. No exceptions. And to clarify, I'm a 21-year old man, and just hearing some of the music makes me tear up now.

I also recommend Orphen. The first season, specifically. The second is okay, but they dropped the continuous drama in favor of an episodic comedy format, which simply isn't as good until it gets going in the second half. But the first season is fantastic.

I can also recommend Darker than BLACK. Sci-fi neo-noir with awesome characters, great animation, and interesting premises.

Also, I recommend all of them with the subtitles. Clannad's dub is passable, but not great by any means. Orphen's dub is actually pretty good, if a bit flat at times, so go ahead with that one if you want. Darker than BLACK... not sure it's actually been dubbed. But whatever, subbed is better in almost every case anyway.

As a side-note, if you ever do try Naruto (because it is a very good show), for the love of everything that is good, DO NOT watch the dub. It's one of the most terrible, ear-damaging piece of crap dubs that has ever been brought into existence. Just don't.

More people recommending Baccano! is always a good thing.

I've never seen the other one, but if it's in the same league as that, well then:

Colour me intrigued!

Off topic, captcha: Tracts elcog.

Sounds painful...

You prefer the old FMA over brotherhood...? Okay there is nothing I can recommend, clearly we are of a different type of person...species...universe...Space-time continuum.

Would you believe (if you count it as Anime) Avatar the last Airbender. Bitchin story.
Also maybe try Gurran Laggan, There are no excuses for that one.
Same as above. Brotherhood actually followed the manga instead od actually diverging from it like the original anime.

Clannad. Kanon. Haruhi Suzumiya. Do NOT watch the dub for Kanon, Haruhi, and Clannad, but I still can barely stand them. English Subbed for the win. Always go for the original VAs, the dubs always choose the worst possible VA for a position and basically rape the character's voice.

By the way, wrong forum.
I am sorry, but what is the point of watching the dubbed when the full authentic experience can go with subs. Especially Clannad, the full emotional rollercoaster won't affect anybody with a half as good voice acting. I prefer not even looking af the dubs.
Wait, what? I said in the post not to watch dubs. Subbed for the win.

I know. I am just saying that no dubs are decent for the anime you listed. They never lived up to the subbed. Personally, I hate dubs with a passion.
I know that the subs are always the best, I agree, but I found the dub for Clannad to be bearable, unlike the others I've seen that were absolutely UNBEARABLE.

Fuck dubs. Subs are much better; less is lost in translation and dubs zlways have inferior voice acting to the original.
yeah the issue with that is, a lot of anime has fast paced action scenes. And i don't want to be focused on white words at the bottom of the screen when big robots are fighting, it takes you out of the moment.
I watch so many I don't even notice I'm reading them any more; it just seems like they are speaking english to me :p

I'm a bit of a foreign film geek ^^

Looking for some recommendations here. I mostly despise anime, but I find in any medium I tend to despise the majority of things I see, and take my time to find niche things I enjoy. Here's what I HAVE liked.

-The first few episodes of Trigun before everything got emotionally invested, complex, and combat-based
-Cowboy Bebop
-Monster (until I couldn't find episodes)
-Death Note (to a degree)
-Gungrave
-Detective Conan (I love mysteries, but some of the later DC episodes started becoming such BS)

What I'd mostly like to find is some anime that doesn't depend on me frantically hitting the "next episode" every single time to be satisfied. Multiple-episode storylines are okay, but I am eternally pissed when something happens in episode 1 that isn't explained until the sixth season.

I don't quite like excessive use of magic and made-up rules. If there is a "system" to this world, it must be specified in very concrete rules, explained early in the series, that are never extended or broken (ie, Death Note, and the creative use of the simple rule: "When you write someone's name on this paper, they will die in the way you specify") I am very pissed off when Yu-Gi reveals some trap card that apparently does some amazing stuff for him in that exact situation he's in.

I'm not particularly fond of the "rising combat levels" genre, in which the quest is ultimately to become more powerful. Obviously, Dragonball falls under this, but also things like Bleach, Naruto, etc.

Given all that, is there any series that could be recommended for me, and if so, what about it would you recommend given what I've said?

Air Gear is alright, but you have to read the manga to finish it (or catch up to speed) but man the fanservice on that one...
The fanservice pales in comparison to ikkitousen *shudders*
I shall be back shortly to investigate this...
I am not joking there is a pantysot every 3 seconds in that anime...

If you do a drinking game where you drank every time there was a pantyshot you'd die from alcoholic poisoning in the first minute...
The hangover from the last two days are a true testament to this statement... @_@
Im surprised your alive O_O
I only watched 30 seconds... Any more and I would have been comatose even longer.
LOL tis a shame cuz I can ignore fanservice as long as the premise is interesting. IN ikkitousens case it had the premise of reincarnated people fighting for power- that sounded really interesting to me...till I saw the montage of pantyshots, even I couldnt ignore it

I don't understand the complaint on subtitles, many other countries watch countless movies and shows in subtitles for a good reason. It's not just about the bad acting, but translating from another language is really difficult and made even worse by trying to line up the speech.

But I guess it would be mean not to make a recommendation so:
Macross (and Macross Frontier)
Berserk
Ghost in the Shell SAC
