Death Note. And FMA: Brotherhood is dozen times better than FMA. I had watched FMA twice before even knowing about Brotherhood, and the latter seemed a bit pointless to watch after, at first, but it's more than worth it to watch.
This FMA B and Death Note are my favorite animes. You should check them out some time.

No, I don't think these count. Anime is pretty much just Japanese animation. Boondocks has some anime influences, in terms of the art style and some of the action beats, but they're both American productions.

P.S.: I accidentally hit the post button before writing my reply. Sorry about that.

So they have to be made in Japan to be anime? That's weird.

I would say Naruto because the first part is tough to get through, but the second half of the series has total serious overtones and is extremely well done. Alas you said you dislike it, so I would recommend Rurouni Kenshin, early Ghost in the Shell, and early Gundam.

I generaly hate anime, but death note is so brilliant it breaks past the barriers of crap ingrained into it by its medium

I'm watching Monster, its seems great. This is a great list and also has a bunch of movies on it - http://i.imgur.com/ZS2Zx.jpg One Piece is agonisingly slow but its also pretty awesome. And as this thread attests, I hear that Tengen Toppa is excellent too.

My personal recommendations in no particular order:

Rah Xephon, Mushi-Shi, Paranoia Agent, Blood+, Monster, D.Gray-Man, Vision of Escaflowne, Now and Then Here and There, Digimon Tamers, Shakugan No Shana, Narutaru(has nothing to do with Naruto), Princess Tutu, Serial Experiments Lain, Sergeant Frog, Baccano!, Azumanga Daioh, Shiki, Welcome to the NHK!, Revolutionary Girl: Utena, Wolf's Rain, Death Note.

Hope that gives you a little variety though I tend to gravitate towards the mind screwy/deconstruction shows.

STAY AWAY FROM EVANGELION! The second half will just drive you insane, though not just because of the ending. The philosophy it pukes over the story is absolute bullcrap.

...I just bashed EVA...

Fooly Cooly- It's touching, funny, but most of all weird. (6 episodes)
Gurren Lagann- It is pure awesome at its finest, seriously you will get pumped after watching this. (26 episodes)
Baccano- It's extremly creative in the way it tells its story and has really good characters. (28 episode I think. Can't remember)
Welcome to the NHK- It has this way of making you laugh and feel superior to its main character while at the same time making you feel depressed because you can relate to the character and may share some of his habits. (Don't remember how many epiodes.)

Take a look at Ergo Proxy (post-apocalyptic mindfuck drama action thing) and Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (1983 murder-mystery-ish horrory-paranoiaey-mindfuck thing), they're both awesome.

Yeesh, I hope I haven't posted in this thread already -.-

EDIT: Oh, and if you're looking for a comedy, there's FLCL, Azumanga Daioh and Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan in my recommendation list.
