Quite a few unfortunatley. The first two of these come from Bathroom Readers, which has a whole section on this, 'the Stella awards' after Stella, the woman who sued McDonalds over their coffee being too hot and won:

A burglar attempted to sneak into a house through the garage while the resident family were on vacation, instead managing to trap himself in the garage. The family did not return for nearly a week. The burglar was forced to subsist on dog food, suing for cruel and unusual treatment upon his eventual release.

A woman sued for possible spinal damage after slipping on a spilled drink cup on the floor and falling to the floor... She was the one who dropped the half-full cup.

A personal account- the Wendy's I used to work at was sued a few years ago by a young couple claiming they found a severed finger in the Chili we served them. After several months the case was dropped when it revealed that they were the ones who put the severed finger in the Chili after ordering it. I forget where they got it from. The sad thing is if they'd won we'd have had to lay off some folks. I could have lost my job over the terrifying stupidity of two people. They're lucky they don't live here.

There was a case in sydney a few years ago where someone was denied entry to a pub because he was not wearing any footwear. Luckily he had won a meat tray raffle at the previous pub so he tied some pork chops to his feet and walked into the pub. His mate slipped on the fatty residue left behind by the pork chops and broke his arm, then successfully sued the pub.

Wow, that law system over there is pretty f*cked up in the US. How the hell would you be able to sue someone for this?

The Lawsuit where The owner of a RV Sued the manufacturer after crashing, They placed the RV on Cruise Control and went out back to make themselfs a coffee, Subsequently crashing the vehicle as it went off the road. They won the court case becuase the manufacturer hadnt placed instructions in the manual about staying at the wheel whilst in Cruise control.... Everyone knows thats common sense.. but unfortunatly in the legal system, common sense doesnt exist. and

One of my Favourite quotes comes to mind:

"I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?"

well you can sue for anything really, whether or not you will win or have your case thrown out is another. this would be covered under the Samaritan law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Samaritan_law

edit: also in most states there's a "castle law" http://www.protectedbythecastlelaw.com/ which allows you to use lethal force to defend your castle which is typically you home, workplace, or car. some states have adopted the castle law for your person while walking down the street

That one's actually an urban myth where the woman put the car on cruise control and sat in that back seat and read a magazine.

Fuck lawyers. All they do is weasel their way around the system, making congressmen have to do all kinds of work. (If they do any at all, after they get elected they just party.)

First thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers. (Thank you, William Shakespeare, for that wonderful quote.)
Sure, blame the lawyers.....
Are they the ones suing? No, they're acting on instructions from the client.
As for the 'weasling', you'd be pretty pissed off if you were in court and the lawyer didn't do everything possible to make your case.
WHY DOES NO ONE BLAME THE JUDGES OR LAW MAKERS?!?!

The system is not at fault for letting these people sue, its at fault for letting them win. Everyone deserves their day in court... even if it is only to be slung out on their arse.

You shouldn't believe it because like so many of these posts. It's probably not true. The only scenario is if the woman being pulled from said car was concious and said "No, don't help me!" and was pulled out anyway.

A burglar suing the victims because they fought back. In Ireland, you can do that.

If someone came into your house to steal or terrorise, you cannot use a weapon against them, as it is "preparing for attack" or something like that. The only way around it was if the burglar came on to the second floor, and you have your weapon on the second floor.

Anyway, long story short, the burglar won due to the "assault" against the victims.

This is why we take the law in our own hands here in Ireland. And whatever you do, don't fuck with the farmers.
I can't remember if it's true, but I've been told that in England (I think) you can do anything you want to someone who's inside your home without permission as long as you don't kill them. I doubt it's true though. If it's not, it should be, although some people might bend that to their will.

Afraid not, responses must be reasonable and proportionate. It's rather complex based on not just the weapons used (its not proportional if someone breaks in with a wiffle bat to use a flamethrower in retaliation), but also the person, an old lady would get away with more that say an SAS member, and also how far they are into your house (more threatening if they're in that in the garden).

It's horrible when you hear about the cases of innocent people getting arrested when defending their homes. The only justification I can think of for not being able to do anything to burgalars is that if you could, you could invite anyone into you're house, shoot them, claim they broke in.

I think they tried it in America for a while until Jehova's Witnesses had to be put on the endangered species list.

The guy probably didn't even look at the manual to begin with (or taught himself how to drive). What disturbs me the most about this is the fact that it implies that he has done this before.
