Now this is serious. Taking down the FBI website shows that the anons can take down anything. Including the escapist.
Looks like they've already set their sights a little higher than us...

Er, is there a -source- for this info? Or is it just rumors?

Anons are wild, but not stupid. For most part, anyways.

Honestly, I think Anonymous is doing this so the FBI tracks them down. Then they can try to get the public on their side. Very risky, they will either be a terrorist cell or a martyr for the cause of freedom.
Sorry Anon, but the U.S. has bigger fish to fry then an internet group taking down sites. I don't think anything will happen.
Anonymous are like a mosquito. You ignore it for so long, but eventually you try and slap it away. Something big will go down if they continue the way they are.

The only problem I have with this is the fact that the majority of Anon is made up of fifteen year olds, and the fact that most of them have no idea what they are doing. Most of them are doing this because they thought Fight Club was a cool movie.

Oh, and internet attacks?

Yeah, people don't understand that every move you make on the internet is being recorded. There is no sneaking around.

Some people are getting arrested soon.

"We need to regulate the internet to prevent THIS" what do you think normal people are going to say?
I would say, regulation is not the answer. But I'm not normal, I'm a libertarian. :D

Interac has a monopoly in many places, this is wrong and needs to be dealt with by boycotts and things like this, not government intervention.

attacking the FBI, in this manner, is foolish, its poking the bear. If you could slay the bear and eat it and wear its pelt, and make tools of its bones, then I'm all for that, but this is just poking, and "anonymous" is going to get mauled.

More food for thought. If you honestly believe these Anonymous jerks aren't hurting innocent people, kindly look at this website: http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/victim_assistance

That portion of the website is devoted to providing information to help victims of federal crimes, such as child pornography. It also provides a listing of FBI offices where you can contact what they call "Victim Specialists." Now suppose you were a victim of a federal crime and you were looking for help. Oops! FBI's website's down, gosh, what now?

"But it wasn't down that long!" you say.

And? A victim might just give up on seeking help if they saw the website was down, especially if they're suffering depression due to whatever crime was committed upon them, and they might not check again later.

"They can find all of this information by other means!" you say.

Yes, but I'd wager that most Anonymous supporters are also piracy advocates, so they of all people ought to know that one of the benefits of the Internet is that it makes it easier to obtain information. This website, as I just explained, makes it extremely easy for a victim to find information and locate someone who can help them, and that can make a difference if a victim is trying to decide whether or not he or she wants help or just wants to try and suppress it all.

As I said, Anonymous is just a gang of anarchists. They're so disconnected from reality that they're incapable of seeing the harm they are doing to others, and even if they were aware they'd probably just have a good "lul" about it.
That is the appeal and demise of Anonymous.

You can't blame them for anything, you can only give them credit. They are just told to do something, the means and steps that is done to do so is completely random.

The attacks you are describing were most likely done by one or two people, you can't blame "Anonymous" as a whole for it.

It's frustrating and idiotic. I just wish this was a day and age where kids wouldn't have so much power, or at least think their actions through.

I wish this was a day and age the government & corporations (really one in the same now a days) didn't have so much power, that the power was with the people.

I am pretty sure all of you are forgetting that this is Anonymous we're talking about.
You cannot capture, jail, punish, hurt, damage, etc. Anon at all.
As soon as someone is taken out of Anon, they are no longer a part of Anon.
As soon as someone is realized to be a part of Anon, they are no longer a part of Anon.
Anon is an idea, and ideas are bulletproof.

As much as I agree with their views on Freedom of the internet, I think this was not a good move on their parts. The Mastercard, Visa and Paypal stuff was awesome (sharing the personal information was not) but attacking the US government isn't exactly going to make certain people happy.

Yup, Anon will be hunted down ruthlessly now. I'll just wait for the news networks to start calling them a terrorist cell on the internet who hate America.
I agree, but I still think by the definition of Anonymous, it cannot be stopped.
Yes, the US government can flex its power and catch the less skilled hackers, but I'm pretty sure the real muscle of any attack of Anon will remain unscathed.
No matter what happens, I seriously doubt the US government will make public any arrests they make.

I've read about them now in the newspapers and heard about them in the news in my hometown and I had never thought, that I would hear about them here where I live. They're getting a lot of publicity all around the world lately and I thought that's what they don't want.

Looks like Anon is playing a few rounds of Poke the 800lb Bear...

Best of luck to those ankle-biters...
Small bear then?
(some bears have been known to get to around 1500lbs.)

OT: Even if the feds did come down on the site and arrest everyone involved, what stops the site being re-made with a different name and reforming its ranks with fresh blood a few months/years down the line?

It's not a problem that can be fixed, really.

Try to harm freedom of speech and you'll get a real good slappin'! Isn't that what the government(s) always said (going to war and whatnot)? So when people slap them for mocking about with freedom of speech... yeah nvm (the freedom hating world police might come knocking on my door soon and I'm a coward).

That whole Julian Assange affair. Well it's history repeating itself. The US Government never really liked freedom of speech did they? Well sure the founding fathers did and a few presidents after that. But these days even the people doubt their right to freedom of speech. A proper Boston tea party is what the WORLD needs, not that xenophobic tea-party-movement bull shit, but a proper freedom and finding happiness and everyone is welcome to join us-kind of deal.

They just made a lot of powerful enemies.

Seriously though, people overestimate anon waaaay to much. If the USA went ahead and classified them as a "terrorist cell" (which they are) then a few thousand arrests later all the angry teenagers and hackers would learn a hard lesson in reality.
And you would be pleased to live in that reality?
I am not a huge fan of anonymous, but I strongly support most of their goals and I am quite glad they exist. On top of that I dont think the Amarican goverment has the ability to arrest hundreds of thousands of teenagers worldwide. Just sayin.

And if anything this attack today on the worlds largest corporations exhibits how they can change things. Its pretty hard to deny given the situation. Anyway as I said I am no Anon deciple or anything, but when I hear news of them nowerdays it always seems to be good.

They could always just... call the police and report the crime? Or maybe even call the FBI? I'm fairly sure when you're the victim of a crime you're going to call the police and if it is a federal offense isn't it the job of the police force to notify the FBI?

OT: Good for anon. At the very least they're doing something.

This is madness. This has gone from protest to vandalism, and any valid points the group made, are weakened or lost.
