http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090610/twl-boy-9-shot-dead-in-video-game-row-3fd0ae9.html

An 11-year-old boy has accidentally killed his nine-year-old brother with a shotgun after an argument about a computer game.

Darius Finley was shot once in the chest after the pair struggled with the weapon at their home in Marshall County, northern Mississippi.

Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said: "The younger brother allegedly got mad because he got beat at some video games and got the gun."

He said his brother, De-Andre Finley, initially said he never touched the gun.

But after more questioning, the older boy admitted the weapon accidentally went off as the two struggled over it.

"That version we can live with because it's consistent with the evidence," Mr Dickerson said.

He said the shotgun was too long and heavy for the younger boy to hold it against his chest and pull the trigger.

"That's the reason it raised red flags," he added.

He said the boys' father was outside mowing the lawn at the time of the incident.

A post-mortem is to be carried out, and the shotgun has been removed from the scene for testing.

Mr Dickerson added: "Upon arrival we found a nine-year old child laying face down in the bedroom of the home.

"The shotgun was near where the child was laying, and casing to the opposite side of where the child was laying."

Police said it is unlikely the older brother will be charged because he is under 13, and "it appeared to be an accident anyway".

Is it just me or are they focusing too much on the video game part of this in the title and article for what happened? It's not as if the game demanded the kid argue with his brother while holding a shotgun.

Personally I'm wondering why they were left unsupervised in a house with a loaded shotgun that is accessible to children to begin with - not exactly the best parenting. I mean if you have to keep a gun in your house keep it in a high up place so children can't reach it and DON'T let them know where you keep it.

Though the media seems to focus far too much on deaths that are "caused" by video games, it's getting ridiculous. Fair enough there's some content that is a bit too mature for kids in some games, but if such games caused this behaviour there would be ALOT more murderers on the streets.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that the picture used for the link to this article was a 360 controller as opposed to the image of policemen they use for all other crime related articles.
And interpret the article as you like I'm just stating my opinion on this and other news articles about video games causing murders.

They could have argued about anything and resulted in murder, video games aren't contributing to it.

I get the feeling that the father won't be prosecuted for being such a fucking irresponcible gun owner.

Southern USA... Where else would an 11 and a 9 year older get their hands on a loaded shotgun...

... I think we know who is REALLY to blame here, I hope.

yeah, I mean, seriously... what father actually lets his children have access to a fully loaded shotgun? If the gun was put away in a cupboard, unloaded and uncocked with full safety, how is an 11 year old kid gonna use it? After all, the thing was supposedly too heavy for him to lift as it is... unless other forces are at work, but I digress.

Wow, another family with guns in the reach and knowledge of their children. It was so easily reachable that they can grab it when they argue... I'm at a loss for words at how stupid the parent(s) are.

The way the title is structured, it seems hard to dismiss the fact that the games are at least being partially blamed... or that's the image they want you to have.

Yeah... The parents are directly responsible for the death of their child. This has nothing to do with video games, this is all about gun control.

I'm sick of people trying to use games as a scapegoat in this kind of thing... the father is blame here. End of story.

I also forgot to point out that the picture for the link to this article was of a 360 controller too, so more blame on games.

Thats why I'll never be going to america....guns being kept in houses....it being your rights to bear arms and all that malarcy....It's just crazy in my honest opinion.

This situation was inevitable.

This will continue to happen.

*sighs* at America.

As much as I think the media gives the video game industry to much burden and blame for this, I read this whole article and no one blamed the video game industry at all. The title simply stated what happened, if they were blaming a certain game, if would be littered all over the article.

Its been said but I shall reiterate. There were guns in the house. Don't blame the game blame the parents.

Okay lets translate this into another story with the same format to see if it makes sense.

Woman and Man have fight. Man goes to work. Man is hit by truck driven by an alcoholic. Woman is put in jail for manslaughter.

Nope.. definitely not logical. Unless they were playing Left 4 Dead before and arguing over who should get the shotgun...
