Correct me if I missed it somehow but why hasn't ANYONE mentioned either F-Zero GX or Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader? The former is the fastest, most insane sci-fi racer ever made, the latter may have been a launch title but is STILL the most authentic Star Wars dogfighting game ever made on ANY console. Its recreation of the Battle of Endor was just staggering. It's also worth getting Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike; the game itself was easily the worst in the Rogue Squadron series (any level that WASN'T in a space fighter sucked, although the speeder bike chase was pretty cool) but it included the ENTIRE GAME OF ROGUE LEADER as a 2 player split-screen co-op as a BONUS FEATURE!

I'd also recommend the Pikmin games, Tales of Symphonia, Batallion Wars and, if you haven't already played it on Wii, Zelda: Twilight Princess. In fact, I prefer Twilight Princess on Gamecube than the Wii and I still hold it is the BEST game in the entire Zelda series, bar none.

The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker (highly underrated)
Super Mario Sunshine
Paper Mario
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Super Smash Bro Melee
Sonic Adventures 1 - 2 Battle (if you can stand all the sidekicks these are the only good 3D Sonic games)
Resident Evils 0, 1 (remake) and 4
Eternal Darkness
Mario Kart
Soul Calibur 2

and if you can hunt it down one of the Legend of Zelda Collectors discs

God i love my gamecube, havent parted with it even tho i have a Wii now.
Eternal darkness is good,
I personally loved super mario sunshine, might be the ony mario game i have ever completed.
The resident evil games are worth a go definitely!! They are awesome.
I think i had starfox for the gamecube, that wasnt bad either.
Again zelda wind waker.
I never got paper mario but i heard great things from it and still want it myself.
You can also find rare gamecube versions of the twilight princess game but i imagine they ARE rare now.

Uhhh. . . the Gamecube was an okay system, but kinda sucked by Nintendo's standards--it suffered from a lack of third-party support like the N64; a problem aggravated by the fact it didn't have any exclusives as good as GoldenEye, Ocarina of Time, or Super Mario 64 (and no, Metroid Prime was not as good as these).

But in any case--the PS2 had a lot of good games, and the Xbox suffered from a lack of Japanese titles but nonetheless had strong support from PC developers to help pick up the slack. Just look at the RPGs on Xbox--not a genre the console is renowned for: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Morrowind, and Shenmue II. Does the GC even have four games this good? Like, Sega's (excellent) Dreamcast leftovers on the Xbox--Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gunvalkyrie, Shenmue II--are probably as good as the best Nintendo-developed GC titles.
For one, this isn't about which is better between the N64 or GCN, as that's more a matter of opinion. I personally found the Gamecube to be superior, but that's, obviously, just my point of view.

For two, this really isn't about the previous generation of the increasingly pointless console wars. Again, that's just about what games you like and what you don't. The OP was just asking for a few titles to get him started off on a system that was guaranteed to come into his life.

OT: I actually really enjoyed the Pikmin games, especially the second one. The Mario Party games are great for screwing around with(and screwing over) your friends. Most of the others I'd list are already up, so just read the earlier responses.

These games:

-Resident Evil
-Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II
-Zelda: Wind Waker
-Metroid Prime
-Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
-Resident Evil 4 (arguably best version)
-Zelda: Twilight Princess
-Eternal Darkness
-F-Zero GX
-Star Fox Adventures

... are the reason the Gamecube is an absolutely unmissable console. If you get a Wii and don't play any of these games you shall get a paddlin'

Also these:

Super Mario Sunshine*
Viewtiful Joe*
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3*
Resident Evil Zero*
Pac Man Vs
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

... sweeten the deal.

MGS: Twin Snakes
As good as that version was, get the original PS1/PC version (also re-released on PSP).

That game isn't great for its graphics, it's great for its feel which is not completely captured with Twin Snakes.

Skies of Arcadia: Legends
Tales of Symphonia
Smash Bros Melee
Metriod Prime 1/2
Eternal Darkness: Sanities Requiem
Beyond Good and Evil

Probably a tonne more that I cannot think of right now

EDIT: How did I forget Killer 7, one of my favourite games

Tales of Symphonia - brilliant JRPG if you're into that sort of thing.
Ikaruga - Challenging and addictive 2-d space shooter with multiple players

The rest have been covered already...but the gems of the system are Resident Evil 4, Zelda: Wind Waker, Metroid Prime 1, Eternal Darkness (pretty much in that order if you ask me).

They have been stated before but I'm putting them here again.

Luigi's Manision
My favourite game on Gamecube. I loved it. My mum loved it. She use to wake me up at 11.00 (I was 7) and ask for help.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
My favourite Sonic game. The story was really good and the gameplay was great as well.

Star Wars Rouge Sqaudron 2
Really good. I love Star Wars and this game really capture the atmosphere of the space battles.

Super Smash Brother Melee:
I really enjoyed this one. In fact I prefer it over Brawl.

I never got to play the Zelda games but I just got a Wii so I plan to get these ones later.

PS2 was super hot shit in the early 2000's it had a DVD player... A DVD PLAYER!!I don't know how many people remember the days of VHS but those were some sucky days, DVD was a MAJOR selling point.

Oh and it was backwards compatible! That was another huge selling point as it launched with PS1's entire back catalogue. People would either sell their PS1 consoles or if they hadn't got a PS1 already buy a PS2.

It also beat all the others to the market and it's utter crushing blow against Dreamcast while launch for the same price as PS1, ignoring all the inflation of the late 90's.

So in summary it was:
-2 consoles in one
-a DVD player
-Competitively priced
-beat Microsoft/nintendo to market

But all those are irrelevant now.

PS2 actually had a pretty hard time in the early 2000's in terms of actual content. MGS2 was a big deal but ultimately a load of tosh. Ratchet, Jak and Sly games were nice but not really broad enough.

The only PS2 exclusive i really really liked of the early 2000's and thought was really significant was Devil May Cry. Also Code Veronica but that was really on DC first and arguably better.

Oh yeah, and Onimusha. But not quite as engaging as Metroid Prime.

PS2 didn't really become a truly worth its while GAMES CONSOLE in itself till 2005 with over the next 2 years:
-God of War
-Soul Calibur 2
-Metal Gear Slid 3
-Okami
-Shadow of Colossus
-Killzone
-God Hand
-Killer 7
-God of War II

until that time PS2 was NOT an essential console. It was highly marketable but mostly multi-platform games that were better on the more powerful GC, Xbox or PC. Interestingly by 2005 Xbox and GC had completely run out of steam in quality games with Xbox 360 rising to the occasion.

IMHO, PS2 was not a popular console in the 2000's for its games but its hardware features that in early 2000's were great value.

But for contribution to gaming, PS2 took half a decade to really prove its worth.

Thank you so very much for completely failing to properly read my opening paragraph. I wasn't saying I preferred the Gamecube over the PS2, I was saying I preferred it over the Nintendo 64. I loved the Gamecube AND the PS2. I mean, you do know we can like more than one now, right? Anyways, this thread is still not about consoles!!!!! It's just about what games to get for a system that you definitely own. And calling yourself or your opinion humble isn't humble.

Skies of Arcadia Legends if you can get a copy. Excellent game
Skies of Arcadia might be the best RPG for the GC. I have problems deciding between that and Tales of Symphonia.
Get both of those, Super Mario sunshine, Super Smash Bros. and Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil (remake) are amazing.

Resident Evil Zero is a spin-off showing the story from Bravo Team's point of view rather than Alpha. Great game though.

Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 and 2. Great single player, even better if you can get more people.

Let's see, I still have a few games to recommend that haven't been mentioned

Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2

SSX 3 and SSX On Tour (gameplay is mostly the same, the main differences are the music selection and the mountains.)

Finally, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean and its prequel, Baten Kaitos: Origins. Two of the very small selection of RPGs on the Gamecube. I picked up Baten Kaitos: EWLO on a whim one day and proceeded to spend the next 60 hours enraptured in the game.

Erm... this is a Gamecube thread, Not Ps2 vs. Gamecube thread!

Anyhow, every game released in itself was fantastic. To start with, get Mario Kart DD, Super Smash Bros, Metroid prime 1 + 2 as they are both bloody amazing (I still play them even though I have a ps3 and pc), Luigi's mansion was great fun, as was Warioware. Rogue leader 2 is fantastic if you're into that sort of thing. I thought Mario Sunshine was worth a look if only for its colourful and fun world, and the mini games where you lost Fludd. Oooh, Zelda master collection, and Windwaker, Resi 4, Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7. They're all great.

If you're on a budget, get Metroid Prime 1 + 2, Smash Bros and Zelda Master Collection and Windwaker. They'll keep you occupied for ages, much longer than many of the games out today.

LOST KINGDOMS 2

I used to play it while my brother played Wind Waker. We would swap every hour or two so each of us could play our respected game. I feel its like an adventure. You have a deck of cards that summons monsters (but it isn't a card game) and you use these monsters to fight in real time. You don't control the monsters, except in the cases that you become them either for a single powerful attack, or until the card burns out. And the more you use cards, they get exp so that you can duplicate your favorites, or let them evolve.

Other people like the first one more, but after playing the second I had a hard time getting into it. (I'm going to try again though.)
