I't hard to describe my situation as far as self esteem goes. I don't really have an opinion on myself like "oh man I'm awesome" or some shit like that. I just sort of am, and I know what I can and can't do. If there's something that I can't do that I want to do, I just work towards it and achieve it. Though at the same time I view myself as a higher priority than everything else in existence combined, because naturally I view life through the perspective of me, therefor I am, at least from my standpoint, the most important human being that ever has or will exist.

So I don't know, I kind of have self awareness rather than self esteem I guess.

I am the ultimate Numero Uno. I am, quite simply, incredible. God asks me for advice. I built Barack Obama, invented Europe and thought up the concept design for Charizard.

I don't really know how awesome I am, but no one tells me I'm awesome, they all tell me I suck.

Therefore, I've concluded I must be average.

A really common occurrence I've noticed here on the Escapist is people complaining about how much they suck. Are self esteem issues something inherent amongst nerds/gamers, or do we just have an over-representation of angsty teens?
I'll vote for the latter.

Im a flaming nerd/gamer, and while I might be a fucking misnathrope too who hate mankind (which includes hating myself) I have a rather disproportionate amount of high regards for myself in comparison to others.

So apparently, nerds/gamers doesn't have to act like angsty teens with self-esteem problems. :)

While I recognize my many shortcomings, I still view myself as a vastly better human being than most of the people I see in real life, as well as being better than many people at many things. In the grand scheme of things, I'm not so great, but in small-scale terms, I'm freakin' awesome.

Nah, I'm happy with my life, life's good.

But yeah, whole lotta wangst on here. You either get used to it or leave I guess.
I think it's because of the high percentage of teenagers here. I think a recent poll put the amount of under 19 year olds well over 50%.

Still bloody annoying though.

Oh wow, I was sure that if I got a reply it'd be a flame!

Yeah, I think in almost every case it is a teen angst thing. I think that quote from the fifth Harry Potter book summed it up well (so sue me, nerd here!)

"You know, this is precisely why I loathed being a teacher! Young people are so infernally convinced that they are absolutely right about everything. Has it not occurred to you, my poor puffed-up popinjay that there might be an excellent reason why the headmaster of Hogwarts is not confiding every tiny detail of his plans to you? Have you never paused, while feeling hard-done-by, to note that following Dumbledore's orders has never yet lead you into harm? No. No, like all young people, you are quite sure that you alone feel and think, you alone recognise danger, you alone are the only one clever enough to realise what the Dark Lord may be planning..."
Oh lord, you just reminded me of the huge amount of wangst in that book, it was so sweet when he got put in his place like that.

I think Rowling broke her caps lock or something and just ran with it...

Never thought I'd say this, but epic Harry Potter reference:p

OT: I don't have any self esteem issues per se, but I know a lot of people who do. Its naturally quite common in gamers, and in the cult entertainment industry as a whole, as escapism and mastery of a competitive medium attracts those with self esteem issues like a moth to a napalm induced blaze.

"YOU WEREN'T THERE! I HAVE SEEN THE FACE OF DEATH!!!"
Oh fucking hell, I laughed pretty hard at that. Well done sir!

I know enough to say "Here at globo-gym we're better than you and we know it"

I kick variable amounts of ass, depending on my moods.

I have a HORRIBLE self-esteem. Absolutely life-altering. It sucks really bad. I gotta take pills and shit and it's still bad.

I feel like everyone is watching me in public and judging every thing that I do. It's no fun, so I stay at home a lot of the time.
I got over a less serious case of that by realzing that people don't care. There caught up in their own lifes to much to.
