I joined the US Navy back in February, and got kicked out 5 weeks later. Amount of BS that I was told by my recruiter(s) is just amazing.

Word of advise to those interested, pick an MOS that you want and don't try and use it as a stepping stone, or you'll end up like me trying to get all this BS off your record.

It's also becoming a pain in the ass for me to get into the National Guard...

Likewise if there's any non-US posters are you joining your nation's military?
It's kind of hard not to for me. I live in Finland and every male (unless you have some disease that stops you from joining) must join the army for a minimum of six months to learn the basic military combat stuff. Every half year (January and July) new reqruits get in and half of them will be there for 6 months while the other half will be there for 1 year (they become "under sergeanter" which I believe is called Last Corporal (not sure spelling is correct) in the US) and they get the training of a group-chief. I have been there for 10 months and got promoted to Sergeant a few weeks ago.
So basically a bit under two months left and I applied for a 6 month job there so I can get some money before I go of studying (not going to go to the military academy).
And my main weapon is the Mortars!
There you go, I hope you learned something today :)
They used to recruit for 1-2 years military service all around europe lol :p

Because aggrevating people with a compleatly diffrent culture and quite a bit of them ready to suicide bomb and terrorise Western Europe and the USA is a good idea amarite?

I agree with you, don't respect the job so much as I do the soldiers. I know far more often than not there's a shit load of them who don't deserve the respect they receive because of their chosen vocation. In the same breath, there is also heaps of them to receive more grief than they should for their chosen job.

Affirmative. I'm joining the Royal Australian Army as a Rifleman in August (I'm joining up with a mate, and I have to wait until then) not as an officer though, I don't want that responsibility just yet. I want to have experience before I have to lead.
Fuck, that's unlucky ;)

As someone currently in the military, I can't wait to get out. I hate this shit. I wasn't always like this, but after my injury and seeing another side of the whole thing, I can tell you first hand it's one of the most backward ass organizations I've ever been a part of. I could go on, but I won't.

Some people like it, and more power to them I guess, but I've realized by this time me and the army don't go together well. My only advice is to learn to deal with an obscene amount of BS and shut off your mind for a few years, and you should be fine.
Ahaha, love it. that sounds like most people I know to be honest

No, it's essentially nothing like the ARA, don't let anyone tell you any different.

I couldnt join the army I dont think

and even if my could my gender would be a probelm (rather off putting after that "skype sex" scandal we had a while ago)

as far as Im concerned let the boys have thier club, killing isnt a place for PC equality (by that I mean lowering of standards and pushing for females to get in in the name of equslity) however hats off to any lady who wants to join up...
To be honest, even if I were one of the females who was up to the role of being part of the infantry, I wouldn't want to join it. It's a huge boys club, more than most people can understand I think. It's not going to change just because women are allowed to join. Regardless of how I feel about the matter, that's the way things are.

Are you trying to justify war?
Because let me tell you, that isn't going to work on me.

Maybe not all modern wars are based on oil (i never said that if you actually listened), but i bet you that oil is on the minds of our leaders, hell, when we bombed Libya, what do you think was going through our leaders minds?

Also, one more thing: Just because you've seen something and been somewhere, doesn't mean you neccesarily understand it.
Just sayin'.
Possibly in the US. Currently, the UK gets about 2% of it's oil form the middle east. 75% of it comes from Norway, and we pipe a good lot of it purselves. The US gets much more oil from Saudi Arabia, almost a million barrels a day.

Anyway, I would love to join the RAF, but an operation that fused my spine with a titanium rod has stopped me from doing so.

Did 4 years and got out. Not sure I'd go back if I could...There's another person involved pretty deeply in my life now, and I'm not sure I'd want to put him through that.

I plan to enlist in the U.S. Army after college, that way I can become an officer as I'll have a degree.

I wanted to do ROTC, but this school is insane, at first they said they had it, then the Admissions people said they didn't, then an alum told me they did ROTC at this school a few years ago...

But things should still work out as long as I have a degree and keep with my plan to get into better shape. I'm a decent weight according to the doctor, but I need to tone things from fat to muscle.

Did cadets for a couple of years and decided my life isn't worth throwing away for some petty war so no thoughts of me joining the military.

As another Finn I'll be starting my service in the Defence Forces in January as well. Just to add to what my countrymen here have said, it's not totally compulsory: nowadays you can also go for civil service, which is basically a year of community service. Going through the army is more common, though. Also, those who go into officer training end up on two different levels: half become corporals and half sergeants 1st class or second liutenants.

Personally I'll do the military service rather than civil service for several reasons: firstly, as said here by others, you aren't going to be pressed into active duty unless Finland is invaded. Which seems pretty unlikely. Second, it used to be, and still is somewhat considered as a sort of rite of passage for young men. And I wanna experience that. Thirdly, all my male relatives up to my grandfathers have been through the higher officer training (their dads weren't very high ranking, but they all fought in the Winter and Continuation Wars against the Soviets 1939-1945 so that's another order all together) and I'll be damned if I let myself come second to them in that respect!

To sum up my reasons: not nationalism, no military ideals, just curiosity and a sense of competitiveness.

War however is human nature. To not have war is to be inhuman.
To not have war is to be intelligent and wise, when how much people would suffer is considered.

To have war is to be stupid and acting out on hate and anger. The Goverment is meant to keep the peace not to go bombing, all goverments should be out there to stop harmful wars, there will always be violence, but violence on a mass scale is redicolous.

I would not join the military even if they brought in conscription for war, I would rather go to prison than be shot at.

Edit: If there were no wars going on and it was standard/compulsory to join the army for a year or two at 18 I would do it but not if I am going to be pushed out onto the front line, I say this because it would teach the large swathes of teenagers in England so god damn respect for once.

Respect for what, though? Respect for the power of a 5.56 round is no necessarily the same as respect for all those things you need to respect to be a proper part of society.

Hell, the Kray twins were conscripted.

You will never ever catch me joining the military.

All this stuff about 'Honour' and 'Serving your country' is bullshit.
Besides, it's going to be more glaringly obvious that all these wars are fought for is oil...

Wow. And there I was thinking this forum was populated by nice people.

I can see the reason why people would want to, but I personally have no interest in the military whatsoever.

Mainly because I don't like dangerous conflict altogether and avoid it in any way possible. Some people would consider me a coward for that, but I don't really care about that.

Mad props though to people who do it though.

Where's the oil? "These wars" were not started over oil. If they were, we'd have oil pouring out our fucking ears. The war in Afghanistan was a direct result of the 9/11 attacks. The war in Iraq was about neo-conservative nonsense, turning the region into a pro-US democratic mini west and all that horseshit. I wish the Iraq war was about oil. That's clarity of thought I can get behind. Go in there take their shit and get out. That is why you start wars.
Well if I started a war for my personal gain I sure as heck wouldn't tell everyone it's about that, I would dress it up in something patriotic, fight the evil dudes, save the world, for freedom and god! ... kind of thing.

OT: I was in it for a short stint just as the conscription age came to an end, and when the time to sign up or leave came our CO addressed us one last time: "If you got any prospects at all in life go with those instead."
And most of us did.

Eh, I've looked into joining the military. But my ideologies are too strong.

For example, If I was sent off to fight in the current war in Afghanistan, then I'd have a serious problem trying to justify what I was doing, as I don't agree we should be there.

Questioning what I was doing would lead me to do some silly things I'm sure, and as it is a warzone, it could cost me my life.

So joining the military has always been an interest, but nothing more.

The Kray brothers were both metal, the majority of people are not. The discipline learnt during the army training would likely change a lot of the teenagers on the street today, hopefully to to see that they were behaving like a bunch of twats.
