Personally I play Magic. I have all my old cards from when I played Yugioh, but after the swap Magic is far more complex in my opinion. I tried getting my magic playing friends into and they laughed at me "You can play everything for free...what?" they were so confused lol. Reason I like MTG more is that every card has a use, theres so many cards in Yugioh that are just plain worse than anothers and have no use whatsoever. And seemingly everything good has been banned now, last I checked all the good cards that came out in the very first pack are banned and replaced with toned down versions. Nice thing is every single card in MTG can be balanced against a casting cost AND a rarity, rather than a seemingly arbitary "lets make this really expensive but very good, and if people abuse it we'll ban it"

... Yugioh is for kids. Maybe if it was something like Magic i could take you seriously. But even then...
I never could stomach Magic. I did Yu-Gi-Oh for a while, but I outgrew the concept of card collecting. Now I only play TCGs if they are a in a video game format and all the cards are available within the game. Less money I need to spend on cards.

No, I believe that would be poker (trollface)

On a serious note, I certainly doubt that, as Magic has REALLY been increasing in popularity over the past few years, and it's existed for quite a while before Yugioh was even thought up. Never played yugioh myself, so I really can't comment on it having more strategy than Magic...but as someone whose played it for years, competed in large tournaments, and still play on a weekly basis, I find that hard to believe.

...which kinda makes me even posting in this thread pointless. Well on an almost related note, seriously, if there was ever a time to get into Magic, now would be it. You can literally go to your local card store (assuming they carry Magic), and ask for free starter decks. Yea, Wizards of the Coast literally just gives out free cards (to an extent) to get people into Magic. They're still money sucking devils, and I still hate them for making the "mythic rare" rarity, but hey, giving out free stuff seems like a good way to get people into a thing.

I got linked that a couple of months back. Dunno if its still accurate, it says it was last updated in 2009, so could be wrong now. Think its still right though.

Never played MTG. Might try it if my hobby store does the free starter thing, that sounds pretty cool.

I got an Asian buddy who's an avid player, wins a few tournaments every now and then but I got nothing to do with it myself.

I used to play a lot. I've still got my cards, but the popularity of Yu-Gi-Oh! has diminished in my area. Sad to say, Magic is pretty much all anyone plays around here. Not that there's anything wrong with Magic, I just don't want to get into collecting another card game.

Huh, well that is a bit surprising, and at the same time, I can kinda see how it would sell that much. No offense to anyone who plays, but it does appear to market more to kids than most other popular TCGs, excluding pokemon, ofcourse. Anywho, I stand corrected, and will now edit my post so nobody else feels the need to inform me of this.

I prefer playing the psp/ds games because I can't afford the cards and I'm bad at deck building so I don't wanna burn money on bad ideas. But it's fun to play :D

Well I don't play Yu-Gi-Oh! anymore, but I was pretty into it when I was a kid. My parents could pretty much hold boosters over my head as an incentive and I'd do just about anything. And while I do think it's a kids' game (the mechanics are really too simple at times), it's what got me into TCG's and, by extension, Magic. So I guess it will always have a special place in my heart.

Also, to those that have been saying that Magic is too expensive, try using proxies. My friends and I make them with the massive number of junk commons we have and it's a blast playing with Top 8 decks without having to pay, I don't know, some $500+ per deck.

It's a good game. I used to play at a weekly tournament thing but then the place closed so they're just sitting there gaining dust. Original season ftw!

There used to be an anime store near where I live where I'd go play once a week, but when it closed down, we didn't have a place to gather anymore. I guess that was about a year ago or so. I still enjoy playing the YGO TCG Video Games though.

i was more into collecting and trading the cards rather than playing. But that was probably because no one i knew could even come close to beating me, i think i was the only one that actually knew the rules.

Now all of the cards are my brothers, and they're gathering dust in some cabinet who-knows-where.

I used to play, back when I was a kid and had little to no appreciation for strategy. Unfortunately, I don't have many of my cards anymore, so I don't really play except for occasionally with my friends' decks.

It seems that Yu-Gi-Oh is decreasing in popularity while Magic is soaring. Around here, there is basically no tournaments for Yu-Gi-Oh, and very few of my friends still play, and the ones that do play it on the side to Magic.

I just want to add for those that are confused, that the card game is based on the manga, where the card game had no set rule; they just bullshitted them as the plot called for it. The rules for the actual card game are heavily based on Magic, but it was aimed to be simpler.

Nope. Magic is my geeky card game of choice. And most Yu-Gi-Oh players are half my age, so that'd be a little weird...

I used to, but not anymore. Man I hated some of those trap cards especially Trap Hole, Mirror Force, and Black Hole. You would be kicking ass then boom everything is gone and you are screwed.

I'll still play a round, but at 18 in the middle of the woods, I don't get the chance often, still got all my cards and a handful of decks, including a a gag human wave tactics deck, as you might imagine, it doesn't always do well. http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Human-Wave_Tactics

Also play some Magic, though I only have my 1 deck I got for my birthday.

As for the strategy and depth argument, I say they can both be decently to really simple to 5 card chains that react in ways a mad man had to think of.

The problem with being a long-time player is that a lot of old cards are becoming obsolete. For example, I got the world championship 2010 DS game and found that cards with 1600 or 1700 attack were usually level 3 monsters. Back in the beginning 1700 was considered impressive for a level 4 monster to have.
