it would be only fair, Aladdin is a chinese tale.
Actually its an arabic tale about Chinese characters and in a chinese setting.

Goddamn political correctness bullshit. I didn't even know what there was a movie being made until I clicked this thread, and I can honestly say I'm not interested anyway, black Heimdall or not.
But PC has always pissed me off to no end.
What's next, a movie of the founding fathers of the US with one of them being played be a black dude and another by an indian? Can't go around offending people's delicate little feelings can we? Pfeh. Bullshit.
The big difference here (other than the fact that race doesn't actually factor in to the character of Heimdall at all, being a god or alien or whatever) is that Heimdall is a fictional character (the Thor movie) based on a fictional character (the Thor comic) based on a mythical figure, that's three levels deep of "It's not real so who the fuck would care if they changed the character abit". The Asgardians in the Thor comics aren't even gods, really. Versus your stupid example of real historical figures.
You should just check the amount of rage with Cowboy Beebop's main character played by Keanu Reeves (and before you complain, he is actually closer to Caucasian than Asian).

Personally, I agree with the original issue (not with the rage associated with it, its just a comic book movie, after all). If they are casting actors for a Norse god (specially one that has been established for the last 50 years), Hollywood should try to find someone that fits the description of the character before checking his acting background. It is not a personal problem with the actor... if he pulled the character off, more power to him, and his performance wasn't distracting to me; but to cast him just to make the asgardians more "diverse" is stupid, its like character whitening in reverse. Next time, they could cast Angelina Jolie as Captain America, Jackie Chan as Bruce Banner and Dwayne Johnson as The Wasp... you know, to make The Avengers more "diverse".

Does anyone but me find it odd that there's so much stink over the guy that played him actually playing him? That and if you watched the movie, you know that he "Must obey commands given by his master King." Nope, not racist at all. :/

edit: Just to make this clear, no, I wasn't against him playing the part, and no, I'm not racist. Just in case anyone decided to misread that and start pointing fingers.

On a more serious note, the only reason you can moan about that actor being cast is the fact that the character is traditionaly presented as white, because you know, its NORSE mythology, hole lot of white people, didn't really hang out with any black people so, yeh, but I watched it and he gave a bad ass performance so no harm no foul in my opinion.

If he'd done a crap job then there would be a load more people complaining but he didn't and on another note samuel jackson playing nick fury is also bad ass cause he is good actor playing the role well. thats all that is required, if he made the character's attitude "more black" then that would be another story, but he isn't he's being nick fury and its awesome.

Meh watch movie bob's vid on this whole issue, its called skin deep and he's got it right, it doesn't matter. don't worry about it dude that posted this ^^ All good in my opinion.

I was going to make an Xibit joke about the mishmash of Arabs and Chinese in Alladin, but decided against it mid-post.

Not to say that all Catholics/Christians are white, but I love how this directly parallels how the Pope reconned Jesus into being white.

Imo, the movie was a movie. I have no issue with 'person X is black' or 'that blue guy is Fraser'. I have much more issue with 'wait, wasn't that dude white in the first movie and now hes black in the second movie?'.

I'm quite the hardcore comic book geek and I couldn't care less. Upon brief reflection i don't think I would mind any charater's skin colour deviating from the comics. Yes that means I wouldn't mind a black spider-man. The comics are canon. People should have fun with the films and tell the story in the best way possible.
Hiemdal was fantastic in Thor by the way/
I think a black Spiderman would be fantastically interesting.

He's an alien who represents a Norse God. I don't care what colour his skin is. HE IS AN ALIEN.
The lack of in-universe explanation bugs me. Did Odin decided they must have a token black guy and a token asian or something? If they assumed human forms to fit in with the locals, why pick persons who the local Scandinavians have never seen?
If that's the case, who's to assume that they didn't take on white forms to meet the scandinavians and then just change forms again afterwards. After all,
loki
is shown to transform skin tones/etc.
The rather obvious token black/asian guy did kinda annoy me. I've no problem with non-white people playing 'white' characters but having them purely so the casters can say 'look, we're not racist, we hazza asian guy' is irritating.

In any case, heimdall was awesome in the film. Go ahead and cast good actors in suitable roles, skin colour should not matter. The only time it should is when a certain character is an iconic figure from real life where there is some reason for them to be a certain colour. A native american chief should not be white or whatever, etc.

That's the thing! I'd love to see some films where they take it from a whole different angle then in the comics.

You know, I love norse mythos, and I've never read the comics so it kinda hit my "well that's kinda silly" chord, but he played the part well, so I have no real complaints.

Considering that Loki (in the actual mythos) is the literal mother of Sleipnir (Odin's horse), it's safe to say that the Norse gods could take whatever form they bloody well wanted.

Do I really need to whip out the Ghostbusters quote again?

So you're apologising on behalf of black people because a black actor was casted as a norse god in a movie? to quote the great Bob "if people were wondering (can't remember his name) was cast as heimdall, all scenes with him should have the subtitles "that's why"" Seriously, the guy was just *that* good to be cast as heimdall, his race didn't matter. I thought he was the best thing in this movie, except i think Chris Hernsworth outshined him a bit, but a whole movie about heimdall, starring this guy would be awesome as hell!

I have a rule about this sort of thing. Basically, if the actor is awesome I don't care. The white kid as Aang was terrible, therefore I care. Edris Elba was the best thing in Thor movie, therefore I do not.

I'm sorry white folks about your Norse god.

I understand that racism is a two-way street and that it's fucked for anybody to wrong anybody else.

I understand that some of you are very serious about your comics and that some of you are actually neo-pagan and dislike both the comics and the movie, so I just want to say I'm sorry as a black man. :(
Seriously? Or is this just a sarcastic thread?

If you're being serious... Space Alien Viking Gods using Super Advanced Magic Artifacts.

Exactly, because depicting a Norse god as grey (weedy alien dude) is fine but black (hench scary mofo) is TOO FUCKING FAR DAMMIT.

I've said it before and I will say it again: I don't get why people think this is a big deal. The entire Thor-comic is pretty much a big joke about the Edda saga. (the oldest writing of the nordic mythology). If you think anything about the Thor-comics should be taken seriously in the first place... then let me put it in simple words:

It shouldn't!
