Why would a teen be on the news for anything other than misbehavior? Should they be on the news for being absolutely normal?
Because teens do things that are exceptional as well as things that are terrible, and should get coverage for those things they do that are exceptional.

For example, National Day of Silence, a largely teen based annual day in which thousands protest for equality does not get coverage, and will not, because its peaceful and responsible. The same is true of any peaceful and responsible youth activist movement because the media will never portray any youth that is not waving the American flag and whistling the Star Spangled Banner as anything but irresponsible and violent. Maybe this is a bit cynical, but its been my experience.

It is true that were not all like that, but a few are. Actually quite a lot are some of these I actually know.

As for myself, I've never took drugs or had sex.

Plus I don't plan to and by that I mean drugs. I currently have no interest in sex, but you never know.

Hmm. Okay, made your point. I'm not sure there is a "NO GOOD TEENS" strategy, but as with a lot of other stuff, the good teens do apparently doesn't get much coverage.

By the way you need to change your name by 21 dec. 2012, to either "2012 didn't happen" or "I was wrong =S, bye now...". Nah just kidding.

I'm thinking about changing it to:

"ICalledIt"

after the apocalypse doesn't happen.

Alright, I'm noticing a trend lately. "Adult" Literature (No, not pornographic) seems to be depicting teens, anywhere from 14-19, as either sex-crazed or buying drugs.

Now, I'm not normally one to complain, but I can see where this is going to lead. Parents who read these books are going to become paranoid. They will try to match any sort of pattern in the book with their child's life, and then condemn them for it. Now I'm not saying there aren't teens that do this, but think about it. How many times do you see a teen in the news for something other than this kind of behavior? This is going to lead to the same kind of paranoia that will cause parents to suffocate their kids, instead of letting them experience life for themselves.

Why am I complaining about this? My mom thinks I'm going to have sex with my girlfriend every chance I get these days. All because she read The Tenth Circle by Jodi Piccoult. It depicts the kids drinking and having a rainbow party.

Feel free to shoot me down now.

Thank,

JGreg
Lol.... I'm 27 and I act like this. So it's not just teens, I think it's merely people of a certain character. Also writing books about everyday normal people doing everyday normal things is lame and boring and nobody would want to read it. Would you rather read a book about a sex/drug crazed kid, or the one about the honor student studying really ahrd to get a good grade?

Those books are called 'fiction' for a reason, right?

No, not all teens are sex/drug/alcohol addicts. It's just that the teens you notice the ones the most are the ones that are.

Sex is, I don't know, not appealing to me? I'm a teen, in case you're wondering why I'm blathering on. I've always wondered if I might be a tad asexual, but I am attracted to women, just not in a sexual way.

Wait, there is something bad about having sex all the time?

Damn you Sweden! You lied!

...and you should have a talk with your mother if she believes in that, after all, it's just a book.

Hehe. Is it even possible to change your escapist profile name?

Stuff might happen though. I'd like to have an "intelligent" discussion on some of the theories and what pretty much will happen. This thread wouldn't be the place to do it though. So, if you're interested you could message me.

Most of the kids at my high school are completely obsessed with sex and drugs, but my high school is also the one that the American Pie movies were based on, so I don't know if I have the most fair point-of-view. They're pretty annoying, either way, especially because I'm asexual and haven't ever taken drugs.

well i would say that somewhere over 60% of kids at school have tried marijuana and it's considered uncool to leave high school a virgin, but as for addicted, that percentage is much smaller, like 30% or something. I go to pretty much the biggest high school in NC so i've met kids from all ends of the spectrum.

Drugs? Gross. However, probably everyone at my school has tried some once or twice or way too much.
Sex? All the girls in my school are either disgusting or retarded. So, no. Although there are kids in the middle school in my town that have had sex.

Although if there was no school, I might get some. You never know.

I go to a school that has a reputation for being pretty wild but I'm almost 17, still a virgin and I've never tried anything more than a couple of sips of wine. From my experience of those in my year who do have sex 90+% only sleep with their long term boyfriend/girlfriend. So I would say the media over blows these things.

I should add though that this is Australia, I think it is statistically slightly more prevalent in the US.
