Haven't you noticed that the world is in a downward spiral?
I wouldn't say all teens are sex and drug addicts, but I will say that it's become a norm to sleep with anyone and do whatever drugs you want and you'll be ok.

About ten people (all parents who read these dratted books) are waiting for my seventeen-year-old goody-two-shoes self to implode and become a drunken pot-smoking party playboy.

I have a genetic condition that makes all alcohol taste like turpentine, and I have asthma so I can't smoke. And every girl I've ever met thinks I'm scary.

I find these paranoid parents to be quite annoying.

This seems to be a timeless view of young people, in a way. The ways in which we are indulgent vary from century to century and decade to decade, but there always seems to be this view that the young are impulsive and out of control people. Which is certainly correct in many extreme cases the likes of which get examined on shows like A&E's Intervention -- though I should qualify that by saying I think we're being silly if we think some of the examples presented on that show are life and death as they are made out to be -- applying this as a general stereotype is unhelpful and more than that, simply inaccurate. It is a personal ancedote, but one of the most responsible individuals at my work is .. maybe 22. I'd say 21, but I'm not sure. She manages people easily twice her age whom are less responsible than she is, and deals with more money in some orders than I'll ever see in a single paycheque.

I have to agree that it wouldn't be interesting if people just sat around doing normal stuff. I am not really an alcohol, sex or drug addict although I do enjoy a bit of the aforementioned stuff from time to time

Huh...

I would argue there are more hedonistic adults available at any given time, than there are teenagers. How does the french saying go? "If you think someone looks dirty, perhaps it is time to clean your glasses."?

My school is made of reefers, some of whom may be sex-addicts. 8P

probably due to oversaturation of the media with controversial stories about teen druggies, which teenagers mistake for reality
(as in real life, not the TV).

Teenagers are some of peoples favorite groups to romanticize, because over time their memories of those years become rose-tinted. They want to believe that it's something more than a whole bunch of self-centred idiots making things harder for the few teens that actually have a future. And I mean politically, not "Emotional stress". That stuff is bullshit. "BAWWWWW HE HURT MY FEELINGS!" Get over it.

Teenagers have a lot of drama, but that drama doesn't translate into sales, so the authors translate it into another type of daytime drama.

Why am I complaining about this? My mom thinks I'm going to have sex with my girlfriend every chance I get these days. All because she read The Tenth Circle by Jodi Piccoult. It depicts the kids drinking and having a rainbow party.

Feel free to shoot me down now.

Thank,

JGreg

What are you doing disappointing her....I would be rainbow partying it up right now if I were you!

I think it's all overblown "Problem of Now" type thinking the wildest thing I ever did was a semi threesome and mild drugs....Pathetic

"Scary"? Scary how?

No, really I'm curious. What, do you stink of evil, have a gaze of cold alien indifference, and emanate a force of murderous intent so great that the dead rise and scream, singing dreadful lamentations and filling the air with the cries of the broken and dying?

...because if so, goth girls LOVE that stuff.

There are some teens that have sex with everyone they meet...and because of that being on the news and the Maury Povich show all the time overprotective parents think their child needs to become a nun or monk of some kind. It's annoying.

In my experience teens do a lot of drugs and have a lot of sex (though not quite as much as the media seems to believe), and theres nothing wrong with that, these are the things you should do when your young and your body can take it all, you should get a smoking addiction, do coke, get pissed and wake up next to some random guy or gal and take on that bet that you can't drink the whole bottle in under 20 seconds, your only young once as the saying goes.

And when were old and bitter we can complain about how bad young people are and how much better things where in our day, then tell the fat kid to GET OFF MY LAWN YA RAGGERMUFFIN!!

Alright, I'm noticing a trend lately. "Adult" Literature (No, not pornographic) seems to be depicting teens, anywhere from 14-19, as either sex-crazed or buying drugs.

Now, I'm not normally one to complain, but I can see where this is going to lead. Parents who read these books are going to become paranoid. They will try to match any sort of pattern in the book with their child's life, and then condemn them for it. Now I'm not saying there aren't teens that do this, but think about it. How many times do you see a teen in the news for something other than this kind of behavior? This is going to lead to the same kind of paranoia that will cause parents to suffocate their kids, instead of letting them experience life for themselves.

Why am I complaining about this? My mom thinks I'm going to have sex with my girlfriend every chance I get these days. All because she read The Tenth Circle by Jodi Piccoult. It depicts the kids drinking and having a rainbow party.

uh... what is a rainbow party anyway?

When I was a teenager living at home, I didn't do any drugs, I did not drink, and I didn't have sex.
I was a sad boy.

Hmm...well, I had a period around 8th grade and early freshman year where I would have been considered "sex crazed," but now I have backed off from that because it is not as fun as it would seem and I want more meaning in a relationship so I've been single for going on a year now and I will keep it that way until I find someone that I can connect with.

However, I have also been a little experimental with some other things but I am largely responsible with it and don't binge. It is just a something I do every once in a while. But I will say this, I had an enjoyable April 20th.

Yeah, it is certainly a bother. The media has never had a positive impact on me, only several negative impacts. Being a 15 year-old Metalhead means that everyone I meet thinks I'm either on drugs, going to steal something, or trying to hurt someone. On top of that my parents are overprotective and don't seem to believe that I can handle myself for more than a few hours alone. Oh popular media, how I hate you.

Never had sex, drugs, or even alcohol, and I'm 20. In 20 years, I could be in a movie.
