I think the more plausible "Gunblade" will be the one like Cervantes wields in Soul Calibur. It's like a sword but its hilt is a pistol. That can probably work.

The fact that the spanish had a pistol blade makes it plausable, but if the pistol is automatic, then backfire is always a problem

this site has some pictures of gunblades. There is a Katar fitted with pistols so it that fits with Soul Blade. Read in the wiki there there was actually pistols combined with brass knuckles and knives and this site actually has a picture of one.

Holy Christ how many of you people are going on about 'what a Gunblade is' but your so far from the truth? (extreme geek mode = on)
A Gunblade in FF8 does not shoot a bullet at all. When you pull the trigger, it causes a reverberation down the sword giving the sword strike extra damage. That's all.

In that sense, no they aren't plausible because while it does add extra force to the strike theoretically, unless your really strong and able to hold the sword firmly the whole way, you will lose grip of it and things will go tits up.
Fix'd for grammar.

Also, that's supposed to be better how? Exactly how is turning the sword into a giant steel vibrator going to do more damage?

It's extremely plausible, you simply have to redesign it a bit. If you wanted it to actually shoot a projectile then you'd need a split blade along the top and bottom of a much longer barrel.

As for the concept of the firing force sending a shockwave through the blade too enhance strike damage then thats quite a...stupid idea from a physics point of view. A standard cartridge for a rifle can blow a persons fingers off if they cover the breach with their hand. So such a force would put such a strong vribation through the ENTIRE weapon that it would shatter all the bones in your hand when you fired it.

well that was intresting, i know the gunblades in FF8 didnt shoot projectiles but saying gunsword sounds lamer.

so now that we have concluded gunblades are plausible they are near useless. so what do you think would be a good addition to a gun then?

At this day and age who needs gunblades? 50 years from now when you get bipedal metal gears walking around a gunblade is going to do nothing.
Wrong, my good man. You give the MECH the gunblade. Or at least some kind of giant-robot-sized bayonet for it's gun.

Also, there's the ballistic knives that the Spetsnaz are known for. I imagine SOME use has come of those things.

i personaly think that if you got say a bolt action rifle or something and stuck a sword on it in the right way it would work.
Isn't that what a bayonet is?

It could work, but whether it would be practicle and worthwhile compared to a standard gun or sword I don't think so.

I think there should be a gun that shoots knives... And on impact the knife shoots a bullet... and then the knife explodes... and its on fire... and made of poison.

The Lancer (chainsaw bayonet) in Gears of War would be even more impractical, you'd be more likely to slice of your hand than do any damage.
Guess what?

A regular sword causes simple cutting damage. A gunblade, if triggered at the right moment, would also cause widespread trauma to much of the rest of the body. Imagine a small stick of dynamite going off against your ribcage, but disregard shrapnel and heat- the concussive force would travel through the bone and attached vital organs, causing much more damage. Sort of how like a bullet is designed not to poke a hole in your body, but to inflict blunt force trauma on your vital organs. A sledgehammer that hits you on the inside.

But as has been said before by many others, the "gunblade" concept is both prone towards failure and entirely impractical, especially considering that we have many different ways to fire actual bullets now.

Why does everyone seem to miss this post.

THEY EXISTED
No one ever pays attention to individual posts.

OT Im a bit of a history of weapons expert and less then two feet away from me is a book with all sorts of combination weapons in it. I can tell you now the gun-blades get their asses kicked by Gun mace's.
I think I have that book too.

I tried to find a picture of a gun mace, but google image search kept coming up with guns that shoot mace.

But it really doesn't change anything. You're basically saying a sword going through your torso that traumatizes your surrounding organs is more damaging than a sword that just goes through your torso, and you are correct. But you are going to die either way, because a sword just went through your torso. The FF8 gunblade is designed that way simply to sound and look cool.
