Does anyone else feel this way? Cause there hasn't been a decent RPG for quite a few years. The only recent RPG I can think of that made an impression on me was Lost Odyssey.

Oh, if anyone does think this. Do you reckon the new Final Fantasy installments will revive this genre?

Over and Out.
You obviously do not own a DS or a PSP and have never heard of a publisher/developer called Atlus. There have been numerous awesome RPG games released on the handheld systems lately.

Oblivion and Fallout 3 was good, but the story lines in the two weren't good in my opinion.

I'm not an expert on the whole thing by the way. Just wondering what other people think.
Not sure where your getting your ideas, RPGs are more mainstream and popular than ever.

People who would have NEVER touched an RPG are now spending 100+ hours on them.
and more and more games are taking RPG elements.
yeah true
i was never eally into rpg's until i bought oblivion and i have spent 220 hours on it and i like them now

RPGs are changing, if you're purely into the traditional ones then Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon will probably be the only recent instalments you'll like.

Well, if less mainstream ones are coming out... their are about 6 RPG's I am anxiously awaiting over the next 5 months. None are big releases. One happens to be a free web game that is actually going to be damned good (full sized game with animations, sounds, what have you) http://www.dungeontreasure.com/. Elemental:War of Magic, <- will also likely rock (will be a big release in like february).

JRPGs aren't as abundant as they once were, but there's still plenty of WRPGs lately, even more so on consoles unless I'm mistaken. I wouldn't say RPGs are dying out at all.

Not to be an ass, but I think thats more of a psuedo RPG. Ah well.

I don't think they're dying. I'm still in love with Oblivion. *Cradles it in his arms.*
all hale Oblivion, it is quickly becoming my favourite game atm.
OP: I've seen more RPG's than any other game at the moment, which is good for me as thats the genre i play most yay

Fallout 3, The Witcher? Ring any bells? Those are just a couple that have come out recently. I don't think you can sneeze with out hitting a JRPG. Then there are games like Aion or WoW, which are MMORPGs. I think if you look there is a glut of RPGs just waiting to be played.

there's a lot of RPGs, but also a crapload of games with RPG elements. makes it kinda hard to pull out the pure.

If anything, RPGs will only have a slow period, due to all the other games with RPG elements, maybe fall a bit back, like the point and click adventure games, and the citybuilders. They're still there, just lack grand titles going up each month.

I think at the moment there is a pretty big slow in gaming in general. (Maybe due to the time of the year etc). I am looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV. (XIV is mmorpg, and I feel XI needs at upgrade at this point).

No decent RPGs in the last few years? I'm pretty sure every platform has had their slice of good RPGs.

The DS is overloaded with them (mainly JRPGs, but I think that's what is preferred here), Xbox 360 has been on a binge with them, the Wii has a handful. I think the only platforms that could be described as struggling for them would be Sony's, but that's mainly due to the fact they get re-releases or ports.

I think it's just a change of tastes, my preferred genre is far and away the RPG genre, but I haven't played one yet this year.

I have a number of RPGs in my collection (I won't list so as not to come across as boasting) that I haven't even touched. I know I want them, but I can't bring myself to play them. It's not a "relaxing" genre for want of a better description, and I've just wanted brainless fun like Banjo Kazooie and CoD4 recently.

I won't call anything that's a first person shooter and RPG.

So that takes out fallout, mass effect, and bioshock.

So far the most recent one i've liked is Fire Emblem: Radient Dawn.

So you equate dying out with "im being picky"? Just cos there havent been any you liked doesnt mean theyre all disappearing.
How is it that whenever I go to a thread, you're the first person who posts? I just wrote my post 20 seconds ago, only to find that you posted before me.
Obviously he's a ninja.

OT: RPGs aren't dying out. In fact, if you look at the line up of video game releases many of them are RPGs or have a set up similar to an RPG. They aren't dying out, its just that you're picky when it comes to RPGs.
I guess, some folks night not consider fallout 3 to be a "complete" rpg as more of a hybride fps

No not dying out. Just more hard to please die hard purists.

Two of the big RPGs of the past couple of years have been smash hits, but incorperated shooter elements. Fallout 3 was an utter shit story and shitty FPS style combat, with a watered down compared to the original but still okay "VATS" and skill/perk based setup.

Mass Effect had fantastic story and dialogue worthy of a great RPG, but mixed in with an okay but damn sparse power wheel system, and straight up shooter combat (which was lacking compared to normal shooters).

Theyre still RPGs, but ones that have no problems sampling the shooter genre. Whether that constitutes "dying" or not is down to personal opinion. In my view Mass Effect might not be able to hold a candle to Baldurs Gate for example, but enough of the "RPG spirit" is still there in Mass Effect to class it as an RPG, and I think its a brilliant game.

RPG's are growing strong, if anything the normal RPG is dying due to it's primitive nature, more people are reinventing the genre, with games like Oblivion, Fallout 3, BioShock, Mass Effect, Fable 2.

The RPG is stronger and more unique now than ever before.
