Considering that's one of the strongest images that the media paints about modern day gamers, there's gotta be some hint of truth to it. And my experiences online have shown me that there is.

Step 1) Never ever read YouTube comments. Ever. To fully avoid them, use the free extension called "Cleanr" [http://clea.nr/]. (I promise you, once you use that, you'll never want to use YouTube the regular way ever again.

People just get annoyed too easy. I rarely find anyone that screams and yells into the mic and when they do its normally some idiot in his twenties or so. They put in a mute button for a reason and player reviews actually do work.
In the rare event that I come across a high pitched 12 year old, spamming ****** into the mic like a machine gun who also happens to teabag then I find the best way to deal with it is to make his life hell by never letting him live longer then 5 seconds. Also mute.

I never really found kids too big of an issue. In fact one of my first friends on XBOX LIVE was a kid and he was pretty cool. Besides, if I ever did run into an annoying kid, I'd just mute them.
It does get annoying to hear them jabber on and on about some stupid stuff, but that's what the mute button is for baby!
I can remember one particular time when I was playing MW2, one of my teammates got gunned down on the Afghan map on the ridge above the crashed plane and his sniper rifle was on the ground. I picked it up and before I could even fire a shot I hear in that distinctive little kid voice "You douchebag! That's my sniper rifle, you can't have it you fucking douchebag!" He wouldn't stop for the rest of the match about how I was a douche for taking his gun. Yet, if he wanted it back, he could have respawned with that sniper class. Kids these days don't make sense. I wanted to mute him...but I was having too good of a laugh listening to him.

If I don't want to listen to them, I don't have to. The reality is that there's only going to be more of them as time goes on. They aren't really ruining anything, they're just making asses out of themselves, and in the process *sometimes* pissing other people off. But then again, they probably don't care, and even though I shouldn't, it still infuriates me to no end sometimes to arrive in a server, and then suddenly hear a screaming frothing little shit. WHY do you have a microphone? Nobody likes hearing a high pitched distorted voice. But they probably don't understand that, and blah blah blah blah.....

I was discussing this with a friend of mine just today, and he came up with an interesting point. 3-4 years ago, this was not as noticable an issue. My example for this is Halo 3. I would join a custom game lobby, and leave it later with sometimes 4-5 new people on my friends list. You could find a team in matchmaking, and I made a fair few friends that way. These days, it just doesn't happen, and I can't figure out when or why this changed.
I've been playing FPS games online for a decade and haven't really encountered so many of them. Actually, the only reason why I know they exist is because of people complaining about them on the internet.
Sure, there is the occasional idiot but that's unavoidable when something has a certain amount of fans. It's just that in my experience it's nowhere near the amount that everyone claims. Of course I don't play on XBLA and maybe that's the reason but at the moment it seems that people are overreacting.

I always thought the well mannered younger gamers were better teammates than your average, anonymity syndrome adult. They're quick learners and usually polite. There's demon spawn children too, but I don't think they're half as bad as some of the adults that play games.

People who can't handle their day to day stress, manage people, or play well with others tend to end up running these things- and the good people follow.
I once joined a "really good guild" on advice from a friend. Came into TS and instantly heard some woman raging down someone for not playing the game "correctly". Worst of all, said person was a guild officer. ZING.
