Very rarely encounter screamers while playing CoD. Like, it's a blue moon experience. And when I do, mute, and no longer a problem. The most annoying point, is when they do it during the loading screen, while I can't mute them.

Lol so its put down to kids is it? People are arseholes and retards when they get online. These days for alot of people trolling is more entertaining than the actual game. And unless they're speaking into a headset mike u have no way of knowing if they're kids or not. And if you take the time to actually find out whether they are kids or not I'd say you have bigger issues.

I think it is due to the fact that all these young-ins have internet now. I didn't have any internet until I was around 12, didn't get a microphone until 15. I never was one of those screaming shits or annoying tossers.

However I was at the age that these fuckers are right now, so maybe my environment was different. I was raised to show respect to everyone and anyone, no matter age, gender or race. Maybe these kids aren't being taught morals anymore... I dont know!!!

Seriously, anyone been around for a "GUILD BREAKUPZ OMG". Or a "CLAN SPLIT"?

People who can't handle their day to day stress, manage people, or play well with others tend to end up running these things- and the good people follow.

I once joined a "really good guild" on advice from a friend. Came into TS and instantly heard some woman raging down someone for not playing the game "correctly". Worst of all, said person was a guild officer. ZING.
Seriously, this. And I'll back off my earlier grousing about "The Kidz" because I actually have a number of teens that I play with in multiplayer who are a kick and a half (and usually screwed up about life, but that comes with the age. Doesn't affect their ability to shoot straight).

Adults in MMOs, though. Jayzus, in my four month career in a nameless MMO in a nameless guild, I honestly couldn't believe the drama over things like losing a PvP, or failure to grind and get the good armor. I'd just take off my headset and go to the fridge for a beer. Turned me off MMOs, tbh-- I play games to relax, not have additional drama in life.

I'm not sure, as I cannot use my internet connection for online Gaming, nor do I want to... Like many people, I prefer either non-online Co-op, or just plain old Campaign.

I know it's a tired old topic but I genuinely feel my interest in the online community lessening (great vocabulary -__-) every time I hear another kid blasting out my eardrums. And it doesn't only go for during the game. Be it video comments or discussions over the Halo or CoD franchises, I just feel like I'm over it.

I was doing a little bit of web surfing today, and somehow wound up on a few articles discussing 343 Industries and Halo 4. The comments section was just a wall of hate comments, be it 343's title update of Halo: Reach, or the bloom debate, and I saw at least ten posts about the BR vs. the DMR. Not a single constructive discussion, it was all just trivial, thoughtless nonsense

I only really play with my friends exclusively nowadays, and you know what? We have a good time on our own. But if I travel outside of that group, I just hit a wall of a community I don't want to be a part of.
Well, I think the kids are part of it, and the casuals are definatly a part of it (especially casuals who have been convinced they are serious gamers), but a lot of it is just the state of humanity in general right now. You write a long, thoughtful comment on anything from gaming to politics and you wind up either having people ignore you, respond TL:DR, or just flat out insult you, oftentime while showing they either didn't read the explanations you included, or were just pretty much pigpiling on whatever they happened to not disagree with on general principle... the classic "attack sheep".

When you consider there are people who can find a 120 character "twitter" too much to read, that's an issue, especially on message boards.

With gaming though, I think the problem is worse because the industry itself doesn't give two fiddles about long, and well thought out commentary. They create a "catch 22" situation where they complain about the short hate posts, but they also will use the cop out that "well, we're busy and we can't take the time to read 20 paragraph essays about our product on message forums" when they actually get the kind of response they actually want. It's sad, but any influnce messages are going to have at all on any issue comes from the biggest group of people making the most noise. In general forums are a formality by companies pretending what their fans have to say, the only chance of them ever listening is if the number of posts ever gets to the point where it can't be overlooked. The beancounter going through the messages and realizing 98% of them are negative might cause some changes because of the numbers, but that just means the company will change something, it isn't like they walk away with anything but "well people disliked this" the guy posting three lines or less in all caps, and the guy with the 20 paragraph essay are viewed exactly the same way since nobody is ever reading much of anything to get an actual feel for the community.

What's more I've noticed a tendency for companies to notice people singing their praises and stoking their ego a lot more than the negativity, which is something of a problem, as it leads to a lot of bad desicians being made. I've literally seen companies come to the conclusion that they are acting with "community support" and giving people what they want despite receiving what is overall a very tiny amount of praise compared to their critics.

Right now intentional ignorance of the criticisms seems to have created a model where a company will create a decent product, and then usually do nothing really good with it until eventually the negativity turns into a tidal wave, wiping it out. There is an assumption that sales are indicative of reception, which isn't entirely true, a lot of fans who liked the original state of a product and saw the potential will buy sequels hoping for improvements or that a game will live up to it's potential. When that doesn't happen they get increasingly angry until they DO stop buying it and then you wind up with a game company scratching it's head wondering why the fourth installment of a franchise failed when the third one did so well, and also why fans might be saying all of them sucked except for the first one, despite what seemed to be increasing sales, when really what happened was the first game was good enough to give the company two chances to build on it before people gave up, rather than people actually being all that fond of the sequels they bought.

I'm probably not articulating this well, but the bottom line is that your not alone in noticing this. Part of it is the ages and nature of the community, part of it is the way the games industry is working. You create an enviroment where the guy yelling a minimalist post in all caps has as much weight as a well thought out poster, who takes the time to write small essays... and this is what happens. Rule by the biggest and loudest group of sheep. A lot of people wind up following that trend because they realize that it's how things are, and figure "why take the time to do it right, if nobody cares, and I'll laible just get insulted for it".

They've been around for a long time and I certainly can't see the gaming community being ruined by them, but they're definitely not helping. When I hear some squeaky-voiced kid yelling homophobic slurs down a headset I often can't help but wonder where the parents are. For the gaming community though, I think a much bigger problem is full grown adults who act like loud-mouthed kids when put in certain situations.

Agreed. They're man-children.

And honestly, I think it's a myth that kids are the ones ruining multiplayer. For every kid I meet, annoying or not, I meet at least 3 annoying adults/teenagers.

Let me share with you a little story from the brief month that I used Xbox Live when I was 14. I'm immensely uncreative so for my gamertag I just slapped some random combination of letters after my first name. I had not said a word ever; I knew people hated kids whose voices hadn't broken so I just kept quiet, when a group of 20-30 years olds started mocking the name and telling me to kill myself. Because I had a stupid, uncreative name. This was the first online match, and it continued to happen throughout the month I had Xbox Live.

The truth is that the gaming community is chock full of mentally regressed adults who have the maturity level of 12 year olds. The screaming kids aren't ruining the gaming community; the community has always been disgraceful.

The immature people seem to confine themselves to online FPSs and video comments on sites like youtube. If you play other games, the chances of running into them is severely reduced, and Nobody cares about youtube comments anyway, so it is quite bearable in my opinion. If you feel like playing CoD, play with friends and mute everyone else.
Also, it is hard to say they are ruining the community, with their numbers growing so quickly, I'd almost say they are becoming the community.... doesn't that just make you sick?

Obnoxious kids are everywhere. They are the reason I have given up on most of the online games. I gave up on Call of duty, which wasnt really one of my favourite games anyways, when i kid who killed me once proclaimed loudly that he was "king of the internet" and wouldnt stop boasting about his awesome skills.
Sometimes when i hear people like i that i feel that i dont want to live on this planet anymore.

*Looks around the escapist*

I don't think so. It all depends on the community. If the moderators are enforcing the rules as they should, everything will be nice. If not, well, same as real life.

I always thought that the Escapist mods are to harsh. But then I think how it's better that they are a bit harsher than that they are to easy going. Unlike in real life, the punishment online is nothing.

Clearly not many people in this thread were ever children.
They aren't the ones ruining gaming, neither are competitive players. They are groups that keep gaming alive.
This thread is stupid.
