I think it affects me positively, if it weren't for my computer and my video games...there wouldn't be much for me to properly channel my frustrations. They've also helped me make most of my friends.

I want to start this off by saying that this is more or less something to help my son with some work he's doing in school in response to a recent study. He heard this study and felt something about it seemed very, very wrong. Though only 8 he began putting together a " dare I say thesis" on the subject and asked me if I can help him collect argument's he may have overlooked, and his own survey ti see if this study holds any merit, or was it a " controlled" survey. So, If my fellow, lovely, and manly escapists don't mind, lets see if these " specialists" are right. Could you respond short answers to some questions, followed up with some of your own thoughts on the subject.

children/teens/young adults who spend more than 6 hours a day of electronic interaction ( t.v-games-internet-music-texting) are more likely to become obese, sexually active, smokers, and alcoholics, or other drugs.

any truth to this? not need to get detailed

I feel that the use of electronics, in particular gaming, has impacted my life in a positive way. I have made many real life friends via gaming, and my wife and I can game together and save tons of money, that would otherwise be spent on going out.

overall I would see why there would be a corollation between the obese part, that's one's just too easy, the rest though just seem nonsensical. young people are more likely to do drugs/smoke/and drink cause they don't know better and sexually active cause news flash teenagers are horny most of the time....man i remember those days...lol.

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

Overall I feel I've been affected positively by the electronic features of my life, mostly in regards keeping in close social contact with friends in other parts of the world. I should probably get out and do a little more exercise, but if I wasn't on the computer I'd probably just be reading books, so I don't think that's the fault of anything electronic.

No, sadly

Yes
5. I'm competetive by nature, so if I weren't gaming or watching TV I'd be outside playing sports.

No

Yes
2. Although I occasionally drink and game I think my peers made more of an impact here (light drinker if it matters)

Like most things there are positive and negative effects. I'm more organized because I have a PDA, better able to keep track of social engagements because of email and more cultured because of the internet. On the other hand my GPA is lower and I'm in worse shape because of games and the internet.

The sexually active part doesn't seem to apply to video games in most cases unfortunately.

as I said, they seemed to lump everything into one answer for various habits even if they did not seem to fit...

sexual activity based on these questions so far seem to suggest loosely that the basic age being roughly 17+ with atleast minimum outside socialization. Which biologically is the right age range for activity to pick up for many generations past, even in those of us not from the " digital age" where yes we had walkmans, " BIG ASS" cell phones " with no other function but call' tv, movies, games etc but they were still developing into whats normal now and not " common" ( except TV)

yet those of us who were in our teens in the 70's/80's/90's hit that sexual range about he same age....yes there are a few cases of younger when they start/ and older but on average nothing seems to be there to suggest that modern tech has altered that pattern at all.

Keep, em coming my sexy lasses, and manly menz

Scale: 1

Are you over weight/obese?: Obese means extremely fat doesn't it? I am a few pounds over average.
Scale: 3

I've played some MMORPGs in the past few years and they have contributed to this for certain. Encouraging you to sit at a desk playing a raid for a long time is horrible for your body. That being said, I hate playing them now so they aren't really a major factor anymore.

Do you smoke/formerly? Yes.
Scale: 1

Many people believe smoking is the greatest thing on the face of the earth when they are young. It has not ever been the case for me, but I have smoked a few cigarettes/year because they have been offered to me and I wanted to feel more relaxed.

Do you drink? Of course.
Scale: 2

You do not have to be an alcoholic to drink alcohol. The media has influenced me very little on the actual decision to drink alcohol - aside from a few bad commercials by various American beer companies aiding me in determining which brands not to choose, I just rely on taste of the product rather than anything associated with the media.

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

In my experience there have been positive and negative elements to almost every aspect of my life in regard to electronics. It has been beneficial in being able to communicate with members of my family all over the globe and enabling me to see a broader picture through philosophical discussions in all forms of media. The negative effects would be that I am slightly lazier than I should be (in my opinion.)

Overall I don't agree with the statement aside from maybe obesity, going on my own experience. It all depends on how you are raised and your personality in my opinion if the media will make a big impact on those things or not.

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

Positive. Electonics is a pretty broad term, it includes desktop computers, cell phones, television, gaming consoles, all those things. Without them I'd only be able to read books for entertainment or knowledge, and the library isn't exactly close by.

I would say a positive effect. Helps me relax, I find it enjoyable, it is something I have in common with my friends, and I can still easily find time to run, work out, or train in martial arts.

statistics mean nothing to the individual
this is true, however I dare counter to say that when wrong statistics are tossed out to try and prove an agenda and basically become the modern age " book burning" thats gone to the mainstream, sometimes the only real way to put up a good defense is to have a study/statistic that counters theirs. which most importantly is what my son is learning.

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

For the most part positively, electronics help me get things done such as college assignments, find information on pretty much anything and also help me wind down without needing to take any kind of substance and because of this I am able to maintain a healthy-ish life style as well as have enough time in the day to get everything done.
