Aren't games getting easier because we're getting better at them? It makes logical sense.

In some ways yes, but at the same time, go play any game youve ever considered hard.
It wont be as hard this time, i guarantee.

I think videogames are getting easier, and my favorite example is the Halo series. Try out the Legendary difficulty for each one, and see if you agree with me on this. Halo: CE was difficult for me and took me a tom of tries to complete. Halo 2 was a little bit easier but still a challenge for me. Halo 3 was not very hard to finish on solo Legendary, and to finish it up we have ODST. ODST's Legendary difficulty was a joke.

And overall it seems that I have an easier time with most games. Maybe it's because I'm not a little kid anymore and have better hand-eye coordination, but I'm leaning towards games beaing much, much easier than when I started out.

They are getting easier, no doubts there. What happened to save points not healing you or being placed everywhere you go. Or in some cases just press start and save right then. It also seems with some games not all that you get dlc kind of early that sort of lets you jump ahead of the difficulty curve. Ala Cross Edge's dlc for example. Even if that game is hard based for the grind fest it puts you through.

Where I read about regenerating life, I agree it was usually a life bar, or in some cases you just went down depending on the weapon. *Kicks Golden Gun* Ahem that aside, the difficulty has seem to come more so from controls. I will pick on the already released UFC Game.

A games difficulty shouldn't include me getting carpal tunnel from holding down both trickers, using the side of my thumb to hit the Right bumper, while using my right hand thumb to quarter stick forward to transitions etc. I mean having all these buttons are nice, but controls should never add to difficulty in a game. Thats my opinion purely though.

In a way, Yes. The really old games are extremely hard, not all but some would require a lot of practise. If there was as many hard games then here now then people would think developers are nuts!

However, if you say from 12 years ago then no, not at all.

yes MOST games are getting easier but there are still a few hard ones out there. I find I have to play on hard mode to even get a challenge but I still have fun on Normal mode.

I believe the "normal" setting in games today is easier. To find that old school challenge in today's games, just ramp up the difficulty. For example, take Halo 3. Turn that baby to legendary and you'll find all the challenge you expect in a game.

Well older games would make it basically impossible to beat to artificially lengthen them. Now games are much bigger and players can usually just change the difficulty of the game to whatever they find fun. I think this is a change for the better.

I miss the days when games came with manuals the size of a graphic novel, and you had better read it too if you wanna get far. Last xbox game i got came with a manual thinner than the CD, and that was both english and spanish.

It's a really difficult thing to generalize about. I think that what we need to take into account are three things:

1.) Many mainstream titles offer multiple difficulties to allow newcomers to feel welcome but allow Veterans (see what I did there?) to get a challenge.
2.) Even on higher difficulties, games are seen in a different light as they were when Pacman was released. For something like Gears of War, beating the campaign isn't impossible: sure, it's difficult, but it has a clear end, and a clear set of goals. Meanwhile, Pacman, with no goals and no end, seems like an insurmountable challenge. (Unless you break the game.)
3.) Many developers are much less focused on keeping the game challenging in favor of other elements: powerful storytelling, engaging gameplay, et cetera. And personally, I'm okay with that.

Games are hard man, really hard.
I have to agree with this, there are some exceptions like demon's souls, but most games released in this gen are really easy.
And they're being made to be easier so more people buy them. It's fair enough when games are costing more and more to make, but games like Demon's Souls have demonstrated that making a truly hardcore game can be successful and have some kind of mainstream appeal.

Some games don't need to be hard, as that can detract from the fun. For instance, Just Cause 2 would suck if it was too hard, you don't want to be worrying about your health while trying to pull off some crazy stunt.

In short, the difficulty should be tailored to the type of game. If it's going for a realistic and atmospheric feel, then making it hard can add to the atmosphere (hence I'm looking forward to realism mode in Fallout: New Vegas). If it's a light-hearted sandbox, the difficulty should be eased off.

I have to say that it does seem to be the case. I'm not able to game often so my skills aren't what they once were, and of late, every game I bought I seemed to be able to finish in virtually no time. Regardless of the setting I used, they don't seem terribly challenging.

Definately this.

I find myself cranking the difficulty up to the highest or second highest right off the bat. Heck, I'm starting to feel ME2 is getting a bit easy on Hardcore mode.

I was actually just discussing that the other day with a friend. And they also contained some sweet background info. Sigh. Where are the good ol' days gone?

Yep. The hardest new games I've played are released by the indie developers because, I suppose they don't need to mass market their games to the public like the huge super-conglomerates do.

Play Mount & Blade without cheating and see how good it feels just to be able to beat some Sea Raiders after 3 days of playing :)

Since Contra hasn't been released lately... games are easier. This does not include the over the top fuck you difficulty of Ninja Gaiden Black Mode, Dante Must Die Mode, or Infinite Climax Mode.

Wasn't contra remade on the DS recently?
