The best thing I can do is close my eyes and use full automatic fire. My average hit ratio (which became mindbogglingly clear during a laser shooting game and a match of paintball) is less than one percent.

Well I can hit most things with my airgun rifle, so I guess I'm pretty decent with a real single shot rifle with iron sights :]

Sadly no. I was average when I tried to used a shotgun for clay pidgeon shooting but all my attempts at rifle ranges have been well below average with little hope of improvement.

The main reason is my very unsteady hands which shake and movefar too much to accurately aim.

Wow most people are 'pretty good'...
Guessing from these kinds of threads most people here also are really well trained, know all kinds of martial arts, drink like irishmen and have crazy amounts of sex.
I guess the Escapist is just really lucky that way.

Never used a firearm, but I'm learning to shoot bows at the moment. So in time, I'll be a good shot with those. :)

Haven't fired a weapon yet. Except for a (composite) bow. Easy enough to pull up, but a ***** to aim... for me anyway. Only hit one of the 5 targets in 20 meters  (with five arrows)

I'm a very good shot with shotguns (i.e. i can almost always hit at least 9/10 clay pigeons skeet shooting), an okay shot with rifles from any position where I can't brace my gun and a good shot when I can, and a shit shot with handguns (or at least, with my grandfather's old single-action .38 revolver)
You'll find a sling helps tremendously when aiming a rifle from an unsupported position. However, you will need to adjust the sling. What you need to do is wrap it around what ever arm you are using to support the fore-end in such a way that you can use your elbow as a pully/pivot point. For me, I just poke my through the sling and wrap it around my arm with one clockwise rotation turn my arm over to the left(I use my left arm) and bend my forearm back. I have just enough slack left in the sling where I can pull my hand all the way back and rest my palm on the back om the trigger guard. At this point the sling is fairly tight(not so tight as to restrict blood flow), however, it took a few tries to adjust the sling to have the appropriate amount of tension and slack, and if you use this method, it will probably take some fiddling for you to get it adjusted to where you want to support the rifle from.

It will seem a bit odd at first, but the extra tension will help you to steady the rifle. Once, I'm done getting set (takes about 2 sec after you get accustomed to it), I like to support my rifle by resting my left arm on my chest. Just take a deep breath(very important) and press the tricep of what ever arm you have the sling wrapped around into your chest. In a crouched position(well I squat, most people kneel, cant stand it) I support my left tricep on my left knee.

I haven't had an opportunity to test my squatting position, but standing I can shoot a 2" group at 50 yards compared to a 2" group off the bench at 100 yards and a group so wide I dare not mention it free handing it at 50 yards using an M91/30 shooting 80's(factory 188) Russian milsurp

I'm competent with a shotgun, only done clay pigeon shooting. Rifle wise, I've used a .22 target rifle and a 7.62 target rifle, the .22 I can get a 1 inch grouping with 5 shots in an indoor target range (25 meters long). With the 7.62 T.R I can group 5 rounds with in the smaller inner circle of the target at 400 meters, so I'd say I'm a reasonable shot. Also shot the SA80 a few times.

EDIT: These are with the Rifles standard sights, no fancy optics on top.

I never miss. EVER!

No, seriously I am a good shot with rifles, shotguns and pistols. Although, when I was about 6, my father's friend gave me a scoped rifle to fire and I put my eye right up on the scope. I was walking around with a black-eye for weeks.
