I'd have to say yes and no.Fertro said:The majority of people nowadays seem to think that anything comes from 5 years before the present is old, and therefore crap. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I'm known as the Old Man among my group of friends despite the fact I'm 17, because I think all this 'modern' crap is just that. Crap. Most of my favourite singers/bands originated before the 80's (which isn't very old at all, but to them it is). My favourite musician is Johnny Cash, which is pretty much the polar opposite to what is popular with the 'kids'. Movies are the same, really. I love the old Westerns, and noire crime films.
Are you guys the same? Or do you kind of, move with the times?
Gotcha. It didn't make sense that it was aimed at me, but one never knows. I agree with you completely. People should really worry a lot less about what other people think of what they like. Honestly, if you find it appealing, why does it matter what anyone else thinks? As an aside, I hate it when I have to say, "I listen to bands most people haven't heard of.. no, wait, I didn't mean it like that." I just like a lot of local/regional bands. By virtue of the fact that they're local/regional, most people are not going to have heard of them outside of the area. I don't think it makes me better or special.. I just like it, damnit, and I shouldn't have to qualify that because of those hipsters! *shakes cane at them*Vault101 said:Sorry, no I want acusing YOU personally of nostalga worship...its just somthing you see alot, not only on the internet but in real life..it bothers me becuase at worst it shows ignorance and lack of perspective, and then you get those who proudly rejct anything popular as if it makes them special...when really they are just trading one box for another
and I also wasnt accusing YOU of liking what I decribed there..I was just trying to think about whats popular (and not everything popular sucks...not even music) somtimes I like it..somtimes I like it at the time but its apeal wears off...right now I guess my music taste is expanding
as for me, I like rap..when its good, some is better than others..its a personal taste thing, some people simply arnt going to liek rap at all..regardless of how good it is or the subject matter (because yeah....as a white female theres only so much "Fucking ***** nigga uo yo ass yall aint got shit me!!" I can take) which Is why It end to go for stuff with more abstract lyrics
I wouldn't say that the majority of people think like this these days. But you do have a point. When I am at a party I often hear people say: "Wow this song is like 2-6 years old." And hey they can say that and its probably true. But this is at a party where there are people nagging for the DJ to play "spice girls" so the tennage girls can sing along despite being 18).Fertro said:The majority of people nowadays seem to think that anything comes from 5 years before the present is old, and therefore crap.
I fully agree. As I said earlier in the thread, "anything new is crap" is just as closed minded as "anything old is crap". It shows a complete lack of emphasis on the music/movie/art itself.Vault101 said:Sorry, no I want acusing YOU personally of nostalga worship...its just somthing you see alot, not only on the internet but in real life..it bothers me becuase at worst it shows ignorance and lack of perspective, and then you get those who proudly rejct anything popular as if it makes them special...when really they are just trading one box for anotherrequisitename said:Liking things made a while back and not finding newer stuff personally appealing is nostalgia worship? It seems more like "personal taste" to me. I'm not saying it's better because it's not current, I'm saying it's better (to me) because I like it. I don't care what anyone else likes. I'm not the type who makes fun of others for liking things I don't. I find that pretty childish and indicative of someone who's insecure about their own preferences, to be honest.Vault101 said:are you talking about the popular style today? songs party anthems?...mabye some rapping about "going out to the club" ot somthign like that?requisitename said:Yes. Most of the movies I really like were made before 2005, a lot of the music, too. This stuff today is all right, I suppose.. but it doesn't appeal to me on a personal level.
I wouldnt mind so much if somtimes the subject matter wasnt soo fucking boring
"ohhhh Im going out tonight..out to the club..gonna party...Im singing like this is really deep or somthing because..ummm....*pitbull rapping* [/I]
that said I dont write off all stuff...I like nicki minaj....and electronic music
anyway nostalga worship is a horrible scurge of mankind
I dislike rap full-stop. It feels like an assault on my nervous system. But, yeah. Party anthems don't do much for me and not just modern ones. "Rock and Roll All Night", anyone? It does exactly as much for me as "Tik Tok" does. I enjoy lyrics and I like the ones that strike a chord with me. (No pun intended.)
What it comes down to for me is what I suspect it comes down to for most people: I like what I like because I like it.

I've only seen a handful of them myself; everyone else seems to have the garbage on the radios.
Anyway. I listen to mainly 60's-70's-80's rock, so yeah. You're more likely to catch me listening to Satisfaction than some pop song.
do you know what the 1# hit was back in 1987?...fucking elevator music...(no really)

I love movies from the 90's and lower like Circuitry Man, Return to Macon County, American Graffiti, Porky's and stuff like that. Don't get me wrong there are good movies now a days but a lot of the time they are so focused on graphics that the story falls flat.
I also Listen to Oldies and Hard rock most of the time and most people that are my age are either emo music lovers or hip hop whatever lol
I also love 8 and 16 bit games. More so then most games that just came out last year. I still Play Suikoden and FF VI.

I understand that completely. It's more that it makes me feel old, that's all. And no, I didn't know about Blinky Bill. But I will do some research to find out what that is. Thanks for giving me something to do!Vault101 said:Im only aware of animainiacs..and only because its buried deep withint he recesses of my memory..were it not for the internet I probably wouldnt remember that strange show I watched when I was like...5StorytellingIsAMust said:Oh yeah, sorry for the double post, but I forgot about this. most of the "well known and beloved" stuff like , AC DC, Metallica, the beatles bores me to tears (excpet queen, I love queen)Smiley Face said:Video Games - Being almost-20, most of what I'm playing falls within the 5-years-old range. That said, my all-time favourite computer game is KotOR, handheld is Golden Sun, and console would be... well, probably Mass Effect, to be honest, I love BioWare's stuff - although Ocarina of Time is WAY up there. But it doesn't get much older that that because of, well, my age.

I like what I find to be good no matter whether it is mainstream or not.
On one hand some things are popular for a reason (i.e. Kanye West, Jay-Z, Arcade Fire, The Dark Knight, Star Wars, Red Dead Redemption, Halo, etc, etc, etc), on the other hand, some things are popular because they are victims of commercialism (i.e. Kesha, Bieber, Madonna, Avatar, The Devil Inside, CoDMW3, Mass Effect, etc, etc, etc).
Just like what you like, it doesn't matter whether it is popular nowadays or not.
