Nice thread Aries. My computer broke down yesterday (faulty mobo kicked the bucket when I was trying to put in more RAM, but it was only a ddr1 p4 computer) so I ordered a new Q6600 based system, with 2x2 gig of ddr2 800mhz ram and other basic bits like a galaxy 9600GT. All that for under $980 AU, which is surprisingly cheap for my town, or even Australia. I can always upgrade in the future when it starts to get slow though I find assassins creed and Crysis to be terrible games anyway so I wont be playing them anytime soon. I could write up all the info for some reason if you would like to comment on it but anyway.
A few questions.
Whats your opinion on over clocking and should I do it?
What is a good type of LCD monitor and that is reasonably priced. I am still using CRT monitors since we have been using P4 based computers at my house and I doubt they could properly handle a 22inch LCD monitor or so to its full extent.
I have the option to get a different graphics card but I am willing to go up to $300au for it. What would be a better option than a galaxy 9600GT?
Thanks for any help in the future.
Thanks the for the post!
My opinion on over-clocking is this: I would wait until you build your own PC to overclock, because while it can squeeze a lot more juice of your purchase, it is INCREDIBLY easy to fry your motherboard with a simple mistake. If you want to overclock, I recommend researching the parts in your rig, seeing how well they overclock, see how hot it gets in your case, and stuff like that. The biggest danger in Over-clocking is the possibility of either frying your CPU from too much voltage outright, or slowly melting your GPU because it's too hot in your case.
LCD Monitors...It depends. With a 9600 you can't really effectively game above 1680x1050, but that's an amazing resolution as well. Your gonna want a 20-22" monitor. Just make sure it has a respond time of less then 8ms, or you will see ghosting while you game.
I commend your choosing the 9600 GT,but it is a rather mid-range card. If I might recommend an 8800GTS 512MB, that has quite a bit more power for around the 200-250 dollar range. The 8800GT is much easier to find in the Sub-200 catagory, and can handle most games on medium to high. I am currently employing an 8800GTS 512MB, and have no problem running most things on maximum detail and resolution, although I can't utilize full anti-aliasing on
everything.
Also, NICE choice with the Q6600. I've put it in a build for a friend, and that thing can pump out some DAMN good speeds.
