As metalheads, is it compulsory that we must hate?

I've noticed it quite a lot that alot/most metalheads (including myself), are guilty of, well I hesitate to say music snobbery but something along those lines.
Is it because metal had pretty much always been an underground thing that any mainstream medium of music is automatically seen as an enemy of metal?
Like my opinion is that Indy and pop music must die in a big fire, with lots of screaming and laughter but is that just me being, I dunno, pretencious or something?
Or is it because metal itself has always had a soul and a beating heart to it, the fact that a style of music tends to become soul-less and same-ie when it hits the mainstream.

The fact is that fans of any music try to promote that genre, in the hopes of encouraging talented artists to join that genre. One method of promoting something is to insulting its enemies.

Since metalheads are stereotypically (though I know this to be amusingly inaccurate) violent, macho types, we're more likely to insult things we don't like than typical pop fans.

Never noticed, metalheads tend to be the nicest people you could meet and usually just ignore other music at worst.

Alright I'm going to have to call you on that, metalheads are not violent, were rather passive as a race. People seem to be un nervingly violent twords us, in many case I've heard of metal heads being beaten to death because we dress different to everyone else.
I will give you macho though.

I don't hate other genres, although I do think most metal bands put more effort and have more talent than say....Kanye West, Or Justin Beaver (Refuse to type real name). And the lyrics are usually slightly more deeper than blatantly saying "I love you baby...and I also love your friend!"

The majority of people not into what's popular usually are against the popular. Obviously Popular music is different to saying Pop music. After all, Metallica is Popular music but it isn't Pop music. The only music I hate is stuff that is a bad influence on kids (pretty much all Rap and R&B, and most of the Pop music, especially the slutty stuff). Other than that, I don't really put anyone down for their musical tastes whether it be country, classical, Jazz, or Ska etc...

Except when half the lyrics are just talking about graphic violence and/or sex?

Your desire to set the Jonas Brothers on fire comes not from listening to heavy metal but from your particular personality. That, and the Jonas Brothers deserve to die.

Since I'm a fan of a wide variaty of music from alternative, pop(Imogen Heap in paticular as far as pop goes), world rock, classic rock, metal, Hair/80's rock, classical music,Jazz ect. I don't see the point in geting worked up over it.

Metalheads tend to get mad mostly at other genres of rock (punk and emo for example). As far as other types go, my metalhead friends only seem to complain about pop, R&B and rap mainly because modern stuff is mostly crap (which is true) and that the divisions between the categories seems meaningless.

This is true, all of my fellow metalheads that I've met are just awesome. Waiting in line at a gig is just so much fun cause everyone talks to one another, it's awesome.

Is this metal your talking about, cause I haven't heard many graphically violent songs unless they are just taking the piss, like deathklok.
Haven't heard much sex either.

Not all Rap. Some songs are actually really deep and meaningful.

Say hello to Power Metal. The Part of Metal that is Fantasy and Science Fiction. Its not all about hate. In fact when its about hate, its beautiful. Rhapsody Of Fire. Enough said.

Did you ignore the words inside the brackets? A few overly hostile metalheads on Youtube are responsible for the violence stereotype, not the majority of metal fans. As I said, the stereotypes are amusingly inaccurate.

I knew a girl who wore pink clothing almost every day, but listened exclusively to metal. I also know dozens of metal fans who dress exactly like a stereotypical metalhead, but I only know one or two metalheads who are actually impulsive, violent stoners.

P.S- Justin "Beaver", The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and all those teeny bop idols shouldn't even be in this conversation. They're not even worthy to bring up because this is about Metal vs other legit music genres, not F***ing prepubescent $H%t!

Well I couldn't tell you for sure, because it just so happens that mainstream media right now sucks anyways. Remember that "Soulja Boy" asspie from a while back who released possibly the worst song of all time and made a platinum record out of it? Notice how noone fucking likes that song anymore. This leads me to believe that this music is popular due to trends and nothing more. With metal, there are songs from the 70s and even the 60s that people still listen to.

I would say I'm a bit elitist when it comes to music, but that's WHY I like metal. I also like orchestral scores, classic rock, ska, flamenco, and blues, none of which are even remotely close to what's now "mainstream." It's about composition. It has nothing to do with the popularity, I just legitimately haven't listened to mainstream band and gone "that sounds good" since Avenged Sevenfold.

Most of the violence and sex lyrics are in brutal slam death metal bands like Devourment.(Unleash the Carnivore \m/) Most death metal bands talk about philosophy and antireligion.(mostly christianity)

OT - Those tend to be the newbie metalheads. After a few months they realise music is subjective and zip it.

When I see threads written like this, by a self professed fan of anything, I always think of this.

Don't worry, you are a unique and beautiful snowflake, just like everyone else.
Oh jeepers, I'm sorry for finding my own little spot in life where I feel accepted and part of a big family.
Guess I'm just not as cool as you with your outsider persona ad whatnot.
It's your mind what makes you special dde, not the clothes I ware or what music I listin to.
