Basically, if everyone was secure in their looks, nature intends them to look for healthy partners, and make-up allows women, and men I guess, to achieve this end and fulfil that subconscious desire. Only people aren't always happy with how they look and let their own looks cloud what they perceive as attractive.
For example, I have never met an attractive girl that didn't wear make-up or a good looking guy that disliked make-up. Coincidence? Doubt so.
