Do you honestly believe this is a condition and not just people making excuses?

Honest question, not to be a dick.
This is the question I expected to answer the most, and don't worry, you were very polite about it.

Frankly, it's been shown that ADD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, and while that's not tested for each time it's diagnosed, a proper diagnosis involves hours of testing different cognitive abilities, and tracking whether there is a significant drop in the areas effected by ADD.

It is a real thing, but nobody should ever use it as an excuse for anything I cannot stress that enough.
EVERYTHING in the brain is due to a chemical imbalance. Thinking a particular chick is hot, doing math problems, daydreaming, navigating an automobile in traffic, deciding which foods a person wants, are all due to chemical imbalances in the brain. Chemical imbalances in the brain are what cause thoughts.
Technically every organic process is based on chemical imbalances, but stop splitting hairs, you know what I mean.

People with ADD lack a reasonable quantity of a significant chemical in the brain (I forget the name) that people without ADD have enough of, it's significant enough to be measurable.

I wish I had ADD, that would definitely get me out of bed once in a while. I already push deadlines and do not pay attention to anything but King of the Hill. Being able to use Laser Focus would be very cool. I applaud you sir.

These threads are really getting to me.

Why would I want to ask someone who has a behavioral illness a question. God, you aren't even weird, its just that the thing that makes you different is annoying enough for someone to give it a name.

Never mind, I'll just go start my own thread so that I can draw attention to my differences.

the only reason ADD exists is because some parent was worried or probbily embarrassed that their child was slacking off and failing school...most likly embarrassed but its hard to pay attention in a school thats so boring

so they go to the doctor and say "oh! hes not paying attention in school and im worried" so the doctor runs some boring test which makes the kid more bored so he starts to not pay attention to the doctor while his little mind wonders off into dream world.

so the doctor says "oh! im sure all of our boring tests didnt bore him at all so he must have a medical condition we'll call it ADD/ADHD"

like i said...the parent was worried or embarrassed about their kid and wanted to have an excuse why their kid was failing so they can tell all their high class friends that he has a disorder

plus im sure the medication costs a lot too and thats how they make money...by selling unless things to unsespecting parents

(no offence to all the parents or people with ADD/ADHD out their, im just trying to make a point)
That had too many spelling mistakes and one word that doesn't apply (unless). Other than that, I somewhat agree with your little rant on medication. Although I still want Laser Focus

Anyway, first off, don't tell me "oh everyone has that" I was legitimately diagnosed with this condition, and am medicated for it, it's a spectrum condition, but you can't self-diagnose, if you think you have it, you should talk to your doctor so they can refer you to a specialist.

What is ADD like? It's not quite what you might think. Everyone knows about the slacking off and not paying attention, but there is another side to it that I personally love. Sometimes I push deadlines, but I'm a very successful student, and that's because when I need to, that very same hyperactivity that can be a problem allows me to focus and work very quickly and efficiently, when I go into "laser focus" (yes, I named it :) ) I can get quality work done at an unbelievable rate.

If you want to know what it feels like, imagine being hyper all the time, like you're on a combination of caffeine and cocaine, it can be a problem, but it can also be very fun.
Laser focus is awesome I agree, but the problem I have is that it doesnt last for very long and soon I am laser focused on somethign else. Thats my biggest problem with ADHD (besides the lack of focus, organization and being able to hold a thread of conversation or even a sentence) I get bored so fucking easily. I mean seriously its like one second whatever I'm doing is "OMGOMGOMGOMG DRUMMING IS AWESOME!! -Heyy a lamppost- I like cheese now." Oh and I am diagnosed but not medicated because my father believes it will turn me into a personalityless zombie. Oh and I've always heard that ADHD is different in males and females but i havnt seen any proof of this. Anyone know why? I guess its time to ask Mr Google.

Well the first thing you should know about ADHD is that we have spacebars.

Joking aside, I am sorry about you fish.

Double joking aside, yeah kinda. Its more like "Wow I'm in my head, I wonder why I never am in my head so much as I am now. Hey why in westerns and RDR do the wheels on the stagecoaches appear to be turning backward when they arnt? its probably an optical illusion. Why do car wheels sometimes look like they're going backwards and other times not? Maybe its got to do with the way the light reflects, nope, because the two are facing the same direction but only one car is moving backwards... etc" so yeah for me its often a lot of constant questions and attempts at answering them and making references. Birds that swoop down. People lying in streets. Windows that are dirty. Your just really observant of tiny useless things I guess :S
I kinda forgot where I was goin with this and I cant be bothered to reread what I wrote so yes.

Yeah I kinda agree with this. If someone had a question thread like "I have a question to ADHD's out there" that wud be one thing but the thread gives the feeling of "I have an awesome mustache and no one has one like me, if anyone wants to ask questions about my mustache you can"

EDIT God I just fucked up this thread by the weird posting. Sorry guys!

When I was a kid back in the sixties (yes, I'm very old) there was no disorders like those mentioned here. NO kids had these problems. Back then, you rarely ever could get a soda, there was no such thing as an energy drink, there was no fast food choices (especially in the morning), everything you bought wasn't full of caffeine and sugar, there were no energy pills and no place to even buy them. Modern society has caused these problems with poor products made to entice kids with ads all over the TV. That reminds me...there was only 3 channels on the TV and almost NO commercials. You walked or rode a bicycle to school (even if it was 2 miles since buses only ran outside of town). You burned-up any energy you had so you were not nervous in school.
and that's only part of the story...

I say that's a bullsh*t sickness. All you have is energy. I'm 25 now but back when i was 6, i was thiner and faster... in fact, I was known to be so energetic that I was the one waking up rooster. I live in a rural town and my house was encircled with farmers, so i was legitimately call that. Bed at 11pm and up at 6am. There was no stopping me. You still got that energy and i believe that's no sickness. Throw that medication aways or at least use it when you really need to.
Actually, I'm not energetic at all, I'm lazy as hell.

And if you believe it's not real, you haven't done enough research, it is a real psychological problem, and half the issue is that everyone who has it gets bitched at by people who think it's regular and they are hypochondriacs.

Come on Akalistos, I expected better from you really, it's hard enough having the problem without everyone thinking they know it's fake and bitching at you over it.

It's like if you broke a leg, and everyone told you you're a pussy for using crutches.
I never said you were faking it, i just think that it's isn't a real sickness. Also, when did I bitched you? Show me on the doll where i bitched you?

I say, we are who we are. The fact that your easily distracted and lazy doesn't make you less. What i will say, tho, is that AT 14 i was lazy... i slept in class and got amazing grade in highschool and if that make you sick, than so am I.

Beside, you can't not walk on a broken legs without crutches because you just destroy your leg. Hey, I know someone who did Motorbike and trick and now can't play horsey with his sun because he did a SUPERMAN trick to many.

Sorry, but we can't agree on everything all the time.
Just going to step in here for a bit and add afew things. ADHD/ADD isn't jsut about being hyper all the time. I have ADHD and I'm 21 years old. It effects memory, the ability to retain want you've read and makes learning more difficult. Not because you can't pay attention but it makes it harder to understand some things. I get the hyper focus allot. With ADHD can come depression and ataxia, both of which I have.

Why is it called ADD and treated with medication? When I was a kid, it was called hyperactivity and was treated with a clip round the ear and told not to be a twat.
Bah. My ma' used to have me drinking washing up liquid if I did things like that.

On topic: Do people around you mistake it for AC/DC?

I would say that while ADD and ADHD give one a heavy disposition towards being impulsive, unfocused, or all around annoying, thinking anything, saying anything, or acting in any way are conscious decisions that we make all the time. I accept ADD and ADHD as legitimate diagnoses, but I don't like it when people use them as excuses for their actions. I know one guy with REALLY bad ADHD who acts without thinking all the time, constantly insulting, hurting (physically, I mean), and inconveniencing everyone around him at nearly all times. When asked why, he says "give me a break! I have ADHD!"
I have Tourette Syndrome, and yet I've found ways to control it. I suppose I realized that yes, I do really WANT to get angry, scream at people for no reason, and shout random expletives on impulse, but I do not have to. That mentality has helped me out quite a bit.
danpascooch said:
@Yarkaz: Do me a favor, punch that guy in the face, and then say "GIVE ME A BREAK! I HAVE TOURETTES!"

Then kick him in the crotch.

Anyone who uses ADD like that is a complete asshole.
I second that. There no excuse for being a asshole. None.
I Third that. That just pissed me off. Using something like that as an excuse to be a dick then... yea

According to all of you i should be diagnosed... I was checked and came out Normal. Can you all explain that? Malpractice? Don't think so... or the standard for Doctor has slip this pass few years.

No, not saying you should. I've been tested twice once when I was like 3 and the other when I was 18. It's a very very extensive test. Just because you have more energy or are hyper doesn't mean you have ADHD. Just means you are. ADHD is like having a hole in your mental filter. Trust me you know when you have it. You can't finish things, you get bored quickly, you have issues with organization, sleep issues, I can go on and on.

It makes me a little sad inside when people don't think ADHD is even real. People that say that haven't had to live with it like I have or have had to live with someone with it. As for how it feels, well tell me what you think it feels to see comments like that? Am I going to change your mind, most likely not but that's not my goal. Just wish people would do some research other then the internet. Medical books do wonders.

diseases are over-diagnosed. i wish i had ADHD instead of anxiety/depression. My brother has ADHD and my last roommate has ADD. They just jumped from hobby to hobby and told me too much information about things. They also both had very addictive personalities, like they both would pick up smoking and other habits from their friends and mimic others a lot. From my POV, it didn't really affect them besides paying attention in high school, but how the fuck does anyone pay attention in high school, it's a block of 8 hours sitting on your ass and being lectured as a kid when you wanna play sports and have sex.....No one can pay attention in school.

I think anxiety and depression or bi-polar have a much greater affect on people's lives.
.... I have all three and it sucks also throw in some OCD and sleep issues. I never said ADHD has a huge impact on someone's life but it it does make one, not a good one. As for my life, yea it's had a huge impact but things are different from person to person.
