Anyway, first off, don't tell me "oh everyone has that" I was legitimately diagnosed with this condition, and am medicated for it, it's a spectrum condition, but you can't self-diagnose, if you think you have it, you should talk to your doctor so they can refer you to a specialist.

What is ADD like? It's not quite what you might think. Everyone knows about the slacking off and not paying attention, but there is another side to it that I personally love. Sometimes I push deadlines, but I'm a very successful student, and that's because when I need to, that very same hyperactivity that can be a problem allows me to focus and work very quickly and efficiently, when I go into "laser focus" (yes, I named it :) ) I can get quality work done at an unbelievable rate.

If you want to know what it feels like, imagine being hyper all the time, like you're on a combination of caffeine and cocaine, it can be a problem, but it can also be very fun.
I say that's a bullsh*t sickness. All you have is energy. I'm 25 now but back when i was 6, i was thiner and faster... in fact, I was known to be so energetic that I was the one waking up rooster. I live in a rural town and my house was encircled with farmers, so i was legitimately call that. Bed at 11pm and up at 6am. There was no stopping me. You still got that energy and i believe that's no sickness. Throw that medication aways or at least use it when you really need to.

Actually, I'm not energetic at all, I'm lazy as hell.

And if you believe it's not real, you haven't done enough research, it is a real psychological problem, and half the issue is that everyone who has it gets bitched at by people who think it's regular and they are hypochondriacs.

Come on Akalistos, I expected better from you really, it's hard enough having the problem without everyone thinking they know it's fake and bitching at you over it.

It's like if you broke a leg, and everyone told you you're a pussy for using crutches.

Why is it called ADD and treated with medication? When I was a kid, it was called hyperactivity and was treated with a clip round the ear and told not to be a twat.
Same man, or just shouted at. I seriously was under the impression that that ADD was just children, teens in general and someone really wanted a medical excuse to get their kids to stfu :)
It's not, I'll say it again "Measurable chemical imbalance in the brain" it's real, and it's pretty serious. People who think they have it almost always don't, it's like thinking you have OCD, you don't.

Strangely enough, ADD is commonly treated with STIMULANTS, never quite got that.
I do apologise, but I suppose this threads purpose was to keep out people with misconceptions like me and educate them overwise. Again, I am sorry.

You would think that my annoyance at people when they say they have OCD because they say, like to be clean would have crossed over (i don't have OCD, it's just that I know it can be quite bad) into the ADD area. I'll make a mental note, but I do think far to many people seem to get diagnosed with mental disorders in the USA than you would think, at least thats the feeling I get whenever one of these threads open up, or reports from the news etc.
You don't have to be sorry at all, as long as no one calls me a f--ker or drops the N bomb or something, I'm good, lol.

It's one of the most common misconceptions about ADD, and I get there are plenty of misconceptions and over medication out there when it comes to psychological issues, it's an easy mistake to make.

I would say that while ADD and ADHD give one a heavy disposition towards being impulsive, unfocused, or all around annoying, thinking anything, saying anything, or acting in any way are conscious decisions that we make all the time. I accept ADD and ADHD as legitimate diagnoses, but I don't like it when people use them as excuses for their actions. I know one guy with REALLY bad ADHD who acts without thinking all the time, constantly insulting, hurting (physically, I mean), and inconveniencing everyone around him at nearly all times. When asked why, he says "give me a break! I have ADHD!"
I have Tourette Syndrome, and yet I've found ways to control it. I suppose I realized that yes, I do really WANT to get angry, scream at people for no reason, and shout random expletives on impulse, but I do not have to. That mentality has helped me out quite a bit.

Well, it's more of a lie of omission really, that's technically true.

....Unless they bought it off the street to help you with your studies (some people do) in which case it's totally true........and your parents are criminals, lol.

Do me a favor, punch that guy in the face, and then say "GIVE ME A BREAK! I HAVE TOURETTES!"

Then kick him in the crotch.

Anyone who uses ADD like that is a complete asshole.

No, they are both doctors and paid for it. Said it would help in school. Me, ignorant to the fact I had no idea what it's for. Thought it was something like a sleep aid. You know, just to help out on the tough days. Now I get it.

I say, we are who we are. The fact that your easily distracted and lazy doesn't make you less. What i will say, tho, is that AT 14 i was lazy... i slept in class and got amazing grade in highschool and if that make you sick, than so am I.

Beside, you can't not walk on a broken legs without crutches because you just destroy your leg. Hey, I know someone who did Motorbike and trick and now can't play horsey with his sun because he did a SUPERMAN trick to many.

Sorry, but we can't agree on everything all the time.

Funny. I think we all name it, but we all name it differently. For example, I named my version of that simply the "Get it done. Now" mode. Your name for it is much more awesome.

Anyway, do you have ADD or ADHD? I was diagnosed with ADHD years and years ago (and OCD. And Tourettes (physical), however, that's neither here nor there).

I'm actually not medicated, because I'm one of those cases where several things combine to make medication just about the worst idea possible, where the side efects make the OCD unberable, and then that needs medication which neutralizes the ADHD medication and makes the Tourettes worse, and than I need new medication for those, etc, etc. Also, I'm one of those cases where medication unto itself actually is never worth it, because, even if we find the perfect cocktail mix of meds (and it is a cocktail), my body freaks out and I became highly unstable, to the point that I scare myself with what kind of thoughts I think, and the kinds of things I do.

Of course, this has made me highly anti-medication (for ADHD, OCD, etc. Medication for disease I'm all for), but I do acknowledge and advise those who need it to take it, as it does work for some, or even many, people. I only want it to not be the first choice.

It's officially called hyperfocus. People with ADHD tend to be among the most successful people in the world. Also, the human mind is better than other animal minds because it is larger. Our mind are better than human minds because we use them more. Their weak minds do not comprehend us and laugh at what they do not understand. You may feel small because you're writing this, but you should know that those with ADHD are genetically superior, essentially super humans. We should take over the world, one ADHD is worth a hundred non ADHD's. Raise the flag! ADHD POWER!

Sorry, got a little carried away at the end.

I find it highly hilarious that we all come up with our own names for that focus state.

Anyway, one point in my research I discovered that there is no separate medical classification between ADD and ADHD, it's just really two names for mainly the same thing.

It's generally accepted though that although they aren't officially separate diagnoses, ADHD is referred to when it's ADD but one of the symptoms on the list includes the hyperactivity one.

I think you just want attention. I've had ADHD since I was 10. over half my friends were diagnosed with it too. Its one of the most OVERdiagnosed problems with young students in america today. They said I had ADHD. I told them I didn't care about what they were teaching me. I dropped out of college after 2 years. went back after another 2 for a completely different major and now I'm on Deans list and have been for the past 4 semesters. According to the doctors I still have ADHD and I never once took medicine for it.
