Go watch Gangs Of New York. Sprawling city with lots of local color (like a bar with a giant tree in the middle of it). Just old enough to have a somewhat European feel, young enough to have an oddly rural flavor, and lots of wild history to draw from. Almost all of the fighting happened in the rural South, which is why we have a skewed perception of the period. The Northeast had large sprawling cities as the Industrial Age was in full swing there. It would provide a similar background with it's own unique flavor.
Ohhhh I didn't think of that when I read the OP, damn now it sounds like a really good idea indeed.

Given, I rather have Victorian London, mostly because I'm a sucker for the time period and the potential for light steampunkification (which looks best in London). But I'm open for the young States as well now.

....whats wrong with Civil War era-America? It was a pretty tumultuous time, in both politics and general violence, plus the setting isn't really even that much more high tech than AC2. You still have horses, mediocre guns (but the shift has started, so maybe instead of an arm gun we get a hold-out revolver?)

Plus, you know, Lincoln. One of the most famous assassinations in the world. Pretty big deal.
basically this. i dont see what is so bad about it.

or could it be..because it involves america? okay get off your high horse on geography, its an interesting time period set with lots of lore and shadow/assassination types involved, so it could work out pretty well depending on how they handled it.
Its just America is so overdone in video games, its the setting for most games out there and I just find it refreshing when a game takes it upon itself to be different. Instead of conforming to the country with the largest market.
you just basically explained the reason why in your complaining.

alot of the game companies are based in america, and the largest market is in america, therefore....conclusion?

and what games do you play so often that are set in america? besides logical ones that are/should be based in them, i dont understand the angst towards having a game set there? and i would also use the same logic against america, if they did a war game between mongolia and china, i would be pretty confused going "wtf" if they had america jump in it somehow.

This might have already been said and I may have missed it when skim reading this thread, but surely they will have to tackle the gun issue with regards to Desmond's story. I cant see the Templars still choosing batons and swords when in the modern day guns are probably easier to get hold of.

I've always assumed the last game in the series would focus more or less exclusively on Desmond in the modern day.

Ok the jump from the Crusades to Renaissance between games was acceptable albeit a tad predictable. But a jump from the Renaissance to pretty much any well known era of America seems a bit to extreme of a jump forward to me.

It's a better idea than all the weaboo japanophile retards going "ZOMG, watashi no wants it in JAPAN so w3 can hav NINJAZ!!1!!ONE!"

The first installment of Assassin's Creed is still my favorite in the series, since it had tightened combat (as opposed to the sequel's lag-time between each action) an a clear overarching goal: bring peace to a war-torn hellhole by killing the leaders on both sides.

Personally, I'm still looking forward to the one set in the french revolution, but I've long since realized I'm the only person historically geeky enough to remember that.

Gah, you guys need to actually learn your Civil War history before jumping to the conclusion of their being no buildings for free running. Civil War America has loads of cities with lots of free running potential, from the sprawling mess of Urban developments and factories in New York and other Northern New England states to the more open but still pretty packed environments of massive southern cities like Charleston.

That and you could either be a southern Assassin tasked to aid the killing of Lincoln if you want a bit of controversy or you could be a Northern Assassin tasked to try to kill the president of the Southern America which ultimately would be a doomed cause.

Of course Civil War is a pretty big jump so I just say they should take it in baby steps and just go to either Industrial Revolution Northern America or Industrial Revolution England which are pretty much the same things what with the child labor and undertones of racism towards the Irish.

Forgot to add French Revolution would be nice too storming the Bastille either way as long as AC3 is set somewhere near the Industrial Revolution time period/French Revolution I'll be a happy chappy :3 If we are going to go off of the quote at the end of AC:B then the places can be narrowed down to three locals America, France, or England with the biggest candidates being France or America because they had a very strong Free mason influence (See George Washington and almost all of the founding fathers)

France definitely sounds like a brilliant setting. Paris especially appeals as in the 1600-1800 time period the city was a labyrinth, with narrow twisting streets and parkour friendly buildings. and for an added environment the catacombs below could add an amazingly complex area beneath the city which could be used as a hideout, fast travel or just as a different mission area.

I love how every non-American thinks that the Civil War was apparently fought by cowboys in the middle of the desert. And they get mad at us for not learning their history.

The Civil War was vast, and America's geography is varied enough that you could have plenty of different environments to play around in. Want some open combat with horses similar to the end of AC: Brotherhood? Gettysburg, or any other huge battle! Want some stealthy sneaking around? Most Northern cities were huge, sprawling messes of factories, tenements, and other "urban development". Not too much different than London or any other modern European city at the time. And the Southern cities were also appropriately huge while retaining their own distinct charm and feel. Hell, you could design Charleston to be like Venice! Anyone who is complaining that "they wouldn't have any landmarks or history" is talking out of their ass, like they actually knew any of the "landmarks" in Florence before AC2.

The weaponry of the time was progressing quickly, but still remained "old-fashioned". You had mounted cavalry charges wielding sabers and lances fighting alongside artillery and early machine guns. Sword fighting was still popular, and though guns were coming into vogue many could not afford them for personal defense, especially not in cities.

Besides, technological anachronism is a staple of Assassin's Creed. Or did you forget that around the time Ezio was doing strafing runs in the Roman countryside?

I would say that the spanish conquest of the Incans might be a fun place to go. But to be completly honest, Brootherhoods ending was just to much for me. I am never playing another Screed game again.

Haven't enough games been set around a US government conspiracy? If AC3 gets added to the pile it would feel like a waste of all that delicious plot they've been building up.

Also WHY NO NINJAS?!
My friend, never question the blessing of a lack of ninjas, revel in it.

I know its never going to happen but I'd like to see late 16th Japan, its not only a rarely used setting but its full of factions, spainish traders, Jesuits, the various Daiyoms (I know thats spelt wrong) all of who used assassins as par the course, its would be a welcome break from europe, the tech would still be right, basic firearms, still mainly swords/bows, HUGE cities (seriously some Japanese cities at this time had a pop higher than Scotland or Ireland) with lots good parkor oppotunities. Whats not to like?

You know, people who are long-time fans of the Ac series won't give a damn where or when its set as long as they have a nice neck to stab.
