I was reading about the announcement of this game, and everything seemed great. Constantinople is an awesome choice of setting- It's interesting, little-used, and a place with a long and storied history that we can explore and mess around in. New gameplay innovations, a refined and updated multiplayer, the fact that this is continuing the main storyline and isn't just a side thing, everything seems to be adding up to a great addition to the wonderful franchise that is Creed. Then I read who the protagonists were.
...are you KIDDING me, Ubisoft? Seriously? Ezio AGAIN, plus Altair and Desmond? How can that possibly work?

Let me be clear on this- I absolutely adore Ezio. In my opinion, he is one of the best characters in modern gaming, and one of the many reasons that AC2 was so memorable was the clear and definite character arc that he goes through. You get to see his transformation from a hotheaded youth to an enraged spirit seeking revenge, then to the calm and badass leader of an entire movement. But here's the rub- The biggest reason why I love him so much is BECAUSE of this character arc, and this character arc is over. Brotherhood was great, but its Ezio story was much less memorable for me because Ezio was a much more static character- you didn't see him change or evolve because his character arc was just gettting wrapped up. Fine, whatever, I still enjoyed Brotherhood a lot, and that approach can work for a game. But now, you're telling me that not only is he back again, but that he's going to be sharing screentime with BOTH Altair and Desmond this time around? Ezio's dynamic arc is over, guys. Get over it. You can't just keep telling him to do whatever you want and forcibly drag the series around on his back just because he's a marketable character and he was the last great character you figured out how to make. All you're going to do is just run him into the ground as you keep forcing him to move stories when he just doesn't have any more stories to tell. And now you're telling me that you're not only making him do this already incredibly difficult task but also giving him an even smaller chunk of the game to work with and dividing this story between three different assassins this time, thereby making sure that each assassin gets less individual work done on them? Doesn't sound like a good mixture.

Look, I know that I'm probably overreacting and that we know next to nothing about the game at this point. For all I know they could find a way to make this work- I'm really eager to get my Gameinformer to find out exactly what's going on. I've been a longtime AC fan- 2 is one of my personal favorites, and Brotherhood was quite good as well, but I just seem to be getting bad vibes from this one...
(Perhaps I'm just sad that that fanart featuring a colonial French Revolution assassin didn't turn out to be the next real thing. One can only dream...)

Huh. I wonder what the hell Ezio is wearing in that pic. It's not the Armor of Altair, because he lost that in the beginning of Brotherhood, and it isn't the Armor of Brutus. It does look a little bit like his leather Roman armor, but it's hard to tell.

It would have been interesting to see the Robes of Altair and the Armor of Altair side-by-side.

And I agree with everyone that I hope Desmond gets his time to shine. That 30 seconds at the end of Brotherhood just didn't cut it.

Holy shit... Skyrim and AC:R coming out in the same month!?!?
I'll be buying both so my conondrum will be... WHICH DO I PLAY FIRST?

There's only one way to go: remove my corpus callosum, so each side of my body can operate independently!
Then I can play both at once! LET'S DO IT!

So....is this another inbetweeny game like Brotherhood? Or were the hints at a very particular pair of time periods/locations at the end of Brotherhood and its DLC just a big cocktease?

I like Ezio, but I'd much prefer to move away from both Italy AND Ezio.

And I feel like I'm one of the few people who is excited about seeing more of Desmond in action.
Some minor spoilers in this post... just a warning

You're not the only one... I really enjoyed Desmond's role change from "average guy with an unexpected destiny" to "Holy crap, I just killed a guy as Desmund!"

Why the fuck would they call it Constantinople?
Assuming you mean the city. It was Constantine, one of the last "real" Roman Emperors. That was basically his pet city. Constantine+polis=Constantinople.

Arg, I wanted a new ancestor to go back to. And I thought Ezio's story was already done - he's the new leader of the Assassins and he rebuilds the order.

Eh, it'll still be an enjoyable game regardless, but I'd really like the series to just move on, make AC3, and conclude the story of Desmond and the calamity that's about the strike the Earth.

Ezio again???? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy??? Altair and Desmond should offset this a bit but why couldn't we have Ancient Greece, or Victorian London or Fucking Aztecs? Cmon Ubisoft.

I would like to see a different assassin than Ezio, even though I think he is awesome. It's time to move onto a different character. Hopefully Ubisoft gets through the series and finishes it up before it becomes too boring and overdone ala Call of Duty.

My only hope is that they dont milk this series before it ends.
Maybe they have been working on the finale whilst releasing Brotherhood and Revelations, and this is just to give us our fix until its finished... I hope.

Just, please, Ubisoft - DO NOT 'COD'IFY THIS SERIES!

And the crazy, M. Night Shamylan twist ending?

Altair, Ezio, and Desmond are all related!!! Muahahahahaha!!!

....

Oh, wait, sorry, that's the entire point. Well, I hope it's good because I would like to see the series evolve even more (haven't played Brotherhood). A change of scenary sounds good as well. But it feels really soon, unless I'm just losing track of time. It feels like Brotherhood was questionably soon to Asscreed 2, and now this seems quite soon to Brotherhood. As some earlier posters said, I hope Ubi doesn't try any COD-ish nonsense.

While I love Ezio and I'm stoked for the return of Altair, I'd love to have an AC game in Japan, fighting ninjas and samurai. Being a ninja assassin could even let them bring back some of the Prince's moves, from his wall runs to more acrobatic fighting. That being said, the SC team has yet to disappoint me, and I'll be happy with wherever they take the series and the story.

Oh yea, one question, too- What the heck happened to the 3DS Assassin's Creed game that was named at E3? A game that, at least according to Wikipedia, ALSO stars Ezio? Is that still happening or what?

I'm torn. I really, really like Ezio. And I really, really don't want him to overstay his welcome. AC:Brotherhood got enough snarky comments about being an expansion pack, and I really hope Revelations doesn't come across the same way. It will be fun to play Altair with the improved mechanics, though.

But Ubisoft: please, enough. Time to move on. Pick another historical period. Another one we don't get to see a lot of in games.
I thought they could move on to the French Revolution; lots of potential there.

Unfortunately Ubisoft seem to be obsessed with the "epic" that they have created in Italy.

Obviously the Screed series is popular enough with people out there to warrant Ubisoft's continual investment, but I just see this series as a paradigm of the stagnation that has gripped modern gaming. The first title had a neat concept of sneaking around as an Assassin which it completely squandered by burying the actual assassination gameplay inside an 11th century sandbox with lame fighting mechanics. Not only that, but it made a hilariously bad attempt to disguise the interface within the storyline - the words "It looks like you're going to need a bit of a tutorial" may well be among the worst game lines ever written - not to mention that said story was eagerly jumping on the Dan Brown bandwagon and milking the Knights Templar for every ounce of conspiracy they could squeeze out, and unashamedly ended on a horrible cliffhanger that resolved nothing and might as well have just said "We look forward to taking your money again next year, ho ho ho."

What could have redeemed this abortion of a game was the potential to unfold the series' true potential by expanding through different time periods each game, but Ubisoft seem to be tailoring this game to fans rather than to artistic vision; and so when enough people expressed their admiration for Ezio as a character they resolved to just make every subsequent game about him. Sure, Ezio is more interesting than Altair, but then Altair was one of the least engaging protagonists I personally have ever played. I don't mean to chide people for liking what they like, but the appeal of this series really does seem to come down to combining the 'being an assassin is cool' attraction with the whole ancient biblical conspiracy theory they keep spoonfeeding us with each subsequent installment, and I simply wish more people would recognise that they're being milked in the fashion that they are.

Anyone else realize that you will be doing all of this running, jumping from rooftop to rooftop and killing massive amount of people as a 60+ year old man?
Seeing as we are talking about people in the 15 and 16th century, I'm not so sure the average lifespan was much more than the low fifties, let along the sixties.
I suppose that's just me nit-picking but c'mon.
Aside form that, I do hope that the next one they make actually has a new protagonist, maybe even one to replace Desmond.

How old will Ezio be in this one? I think he was 50 in the last one and then they joked about how old he was getting. I mean... isn't 50+ a little old for an assassin in the renaissance?

I would much rather have seen Assassin's Creed 3. I loved the first two, but Bro'hood just screamed "rushed out cash cow".

Guess if this is the direction they are going I will have to play Bro'hood, but I'd have preferred a proper trilogy. Oh well, another franchise raped for money.

Wait, wait, waitwaitwaitwait. So this'll be the third game that'll bring Ezio's story to a close? Oh there's a "Yo Dawg" joke in here somewhere.

"Yo dawg I heard you like trilogies so we put a trilogy in your trilogy so you can experience a story arc during the story arc!"

Well the age thing is a bit weird...

::puts on his nerd glasses and starts speaking like Dexter from Dexter's Lab::

However, if you follow the whole God-aliens subplot(?) you would notice that Desmond's lineage is one of a mixed human-God mix. Therefore it stands to reason that he would age better than those of normal man. It also explains why he is harder, better, faster, stronger. Ahem...

::Takes off his nerd glasses and resumes normal operations::

OT; I don't much care to play as Ezio again, his story felt done with. I do like the idea of playing as Altair again. Hopefully they can explain why Desmond has memories of him in his DNA after Altair's son was born. I do also want more Desmond gameplay, fighting and running as him at the end of AC2 and Brotherhood just felt fun. They'll also have to come up with some other way to explain the HUD away since they've now trapped themselves by explaining it as animus functions. (They could have just not explained it at all, gamers wouldn't have questioned it.) Ah well, maybe a visor that tracks your status would work.

At the end of the day though I'll probably pick it up, I hope they take this opportunity to flesh out Desmond's character and world a bit more before inevitably dumping us there with him in AC3.
