No. That's what *you* mean when *you* talk about atheism. The word itself has a storied history and its precise meaning is still argued over today. This is largely because atheism has no foundational philosophical text (there is no book or essay that is to atheism what, say, Das Kapital is to Marxism), and in fact is a word that was originally a charge or insult, that was only later reclaimed for self-descriptive purposes. Furthermore, there is no organisation with the authority to dictate the boundaries of atheism.secretsantaone said:I will not lie, I have come here to gripe.
The gripe is those who call themselves or others 'Athiests' and seem to have no idea what the word means.
Athiesm is the non-belief in a God based purely on scientific fact and logic. Many do not believe in a God due to these exact reasons. These people call themselves 'Athiests', quite rightly.
But then I see these self-proclaimed 'Athiests' declaring "There is no God", "X religion is bullshit" ect. ect.
This isn't Athiesm.
Athiesm is the non-BELIEF in a God, not the knowledge of it's non-existance.
To be an Athiest is to conclude that the evidence suggests that there is no God, not that there isn't one for definate. Therefore most Athiests are also Agnostic. They accept that we cannot possibly know for sure whether a diety exists or not, but they choose to believe they don't.
Belief is not knowledge. It is the very opposite.
So please, next time you want to post in a religious thread claiming you're an athiest and must vehemently attack all religion as false, don't. You're letting the true athiests down.
Defend your beliefs, don't attack other's.

Yeah... I guess you can't say I'll "never truly know!" much in the same sense "I'll never truly know if the easter bunny exists!"... Logical fallacy, can't prove a negative, can't prove something doesn't exist, etc.secretsantaone said:AgnosticCaliostro said:Atheists =/= Agnostics there mate.
1: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable
Atheist
: one who believes that there is no deity
As I said, it all comes down to belief over knowledge.
You can believe that God doesn't exist while knowing that you'll never truly know until you die.
There are agnostical theists as well who hold the opposite belief.
Oh and I'm not a theist.
I disagree. Few people in high school know what they belive most of them will go with what their parents tell them to belive. I've known some who just aren't intrested in Religion and aren't botherd either way, but I've met very few high school kids who have actually made up their minds about what religion they belive in. I know when I was in high school I had an open mind and I listend in my R.E classes about all the different religions. But it wasn't until I had actually left high school and became more intrested in the theory of evoloution, that I became an atheist, because I felt that after listening to all the other theorys, the theory of Evoloution made the most sense to me. I also went to Church and Sunday School as a kid. (just saying that so I cant be accused of not hearing the Curches view.)The Ruler of Nosgoth said:Also a lot of "Atheists" are dumb high school kids who think its "cool" to not believe in a god.
I think you got that backwards. Knowledge is a belief, but beliefs aren't always knowledge. To know the sky appears blue, and why it does, you have to believe the required facts on some level. But you could believe in things that are irrelevant to knowledge, like magical leprechauns.TheHorizon said:(directed at the OP)
You sir, are a moron.
Belief IS knowlege. Just subjective knowlege.
You look up and see the sky is "blue".
But how do you know your blue is the right blue? Maybe your blue is everyone else's purple?
To you your blue is fact.
But will you? For all you know, there could be thousands of Easter Bunnies, occupying a small colony in Malaysia. What exactly makes the idea that the Earth has a creator a fallacy?Caliostro said:Yeah... Damn right! Who are you to deprive me of my chance to go to paradise! Don't give a shit about other people, you're going to "heaven" aren't you, so shut up and leave the rest of us alone.
I can answer both issues (God, and the easter bunnies) in the same sentence: Perhaps you could believe that there could be, but all observable evidence points to the contrary.GenHellspawn said:But will you? Oh, the hypocrisy!secretsantaone said:I will not lie, I have come here to gripe.

Atheism is the "disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods." That is it. Try not to ascribe extraneous qualifiers to it relating to science and logic, as they do not apply. I could say I don't believe in God because of an eye-opening experience with voodoo and I would be just as much an atheist as someone from a scientific background. Just because you think it's bad form to put down other people's religions (and good for you), does not mean that these people who do are not atheists. There are jerks who are part of every crowd you can choose to conform to in the world.secretsantaone said:Athiesm is the non-belief in a God based purely on scientific fact and logic. Someone who is agnostic cannot also be an atheist and the opposite is true as well. Do not confuse your personal beliefs with those dictated by words that have clear definitions.secretsantaone said:To be an Athiest is to conclude that the evidence suggests that there is no God, not that there isn't one for definate. Actually, not believing is the "very opposite" of believing, which is quite obviously not the same thing as knowledge. A trivial semantic point, but since you're technically arguing semantics...secretsantaone said:Belief is not knowledge. It is the very opposite.
I am 100% behind you that it's rather annoying when kids subscribe to atheism and then bash other religions. However, again, these kids that believe there is no God are just as 'true' of atheists as anyone else who holds the same belief. The idea of a 'true' atheist versus a 'false' atheist would only apply if they actually did still hold some belief in a god.secretsantaone said:So please, next time you want to post in a religious thread claiming you're an athiest and must vehemently attack all religion as false, don't. Whats heaven go? Clouds, celebates, harps and frigid angels. -.-
And what exactly would this observable evidence be? To say that it is simply illogical does not prove a thing.ThrobbingEgo said:all observable evidence points to the contrary.
Of easter bunnies existing or of god? Surely you don't need me to explain why a marketing mascot created to shill candy and eggs, which doesn't have anything to do with easter, does not exist. While you might say rabbits that lay eggs made of chocolate could exist, I'd be a fair assertion to say that they don't. I don't know why you're trying to perpetuate a reductio ad absurdum argument.GenHellspawn said:And what exactly would this observable evidence be?
