I'm becoming a bit wary of this myself, especially seeing as nobody has come forward to take responsibility.

I am wondering if Sony is using this as an excuse to generate sympathy for putting a lot of draconian controls into place that will upset users.

See, the big issue with Geohotz was that the functionality he restored made the system vulnerable to hackers and pirates (allegedly). Given the amount of sympathy he's generated and the anti-Sony sentiment that it raised, perhaps this is an elaborate Charade intended for Sony to "prove" that it was right all along and acting in our best interests rather than theirs.

Hacking on this level, with a high profile target, isn't the kind of thing you expect to go uncredited, and if no sector of Anonymous or other known groups is taking credit after all this time, it certainly generates a lot of suspician.

I was buying it at first, but as time goes on, it seems more and more like a work of fiction.

Do people not understand how Anon works? How they attack sites? If Anon was attacking Sony, Ops would know about it. 4chan would know about it. Even if it was one group or another of people within Anon, 4ch would know about it. They'd be bragging, because that's what they *do*.

The secondary issue is that, even if this *was* part of Anon, if it doesn't take even the majority of Anon 'members' to take down PSN, Sony built a crap network in the first place.

It sounds like something went seriously wrong for Sony here, though Anonymous believes [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109475-Anonymous-on-PSN-Outage-For-Once-We-Didnt-Do-It] that it's all a cover-up for what is likely an internal issue.
Considering that they're changing their story more often than some people change their underwear, I have to agree. You don't change your story so often if you're not the cause of the fuck-up. Or just up to something sleazy.

I thought it was clear what happened in the original news post:
Someone found a security vulnerability in PSN and/or Qriocity (as they run on the same system) so Sony shut down the whole service to prevent anyone from (further?) exploiting it.

the quote, in question
"An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th."
It merely says there was an external intrusion into the companies servers which house PSN and Qriocity, and they shut everything off to protect themselves.

^^ this. It seems to me they are using this time to add security updates that could only be done by taking down the system and using all the confusion about anon to try to offset some of the outrage for shutting down the network.

Other sites are reporting that Sony took down the PSN because somebody figured out how to mod their PS3 to make it look like a devkit and download content for free. It's internet speculation, but it would be worth looking into, I guess.

Sony saying that it needs to "rebuild" makes me think that the recent issue with Anonymous caused the company to go forward with a major change so that something similar would ideally never happen again.
That's what I suspected. What the statement really means is "We were hacked by Anonymous a month ago and we are redoing the structure of the system because they still have our passwords and a general idea of how our system works." Seems very much like a precaution more than anything else.
Eh.

The 'anonymous' attack was a DDoS. This does not require (or yield) access to any sensitive data, it's like disabling a car by having a bunch of people stand on it. Any system that allows users to download data is vulnerable to this, it just doesn't happen very often unless there's a botnet or a group of self-righteous tools involved.

They already mitigated the effects of the original attack to the point where the attackers gave up, so this is probably about something else. If the devkit hack really happened, then they're probably restructuring to prevent that from happening again.

It seems someone found out how to hack the PSN store, and that's possibly why they commenced a complete shut-off while they attempt to patch that up. Although it's been floating around for a few weeks so they were a bit slow to catch on if that was the case.

My hope is that Sony does something for the PSN users effected by this downtime... even if they claim it wasn't thier fault, they still are taking the time to rebuild, and leaving us in the dark... None of what anything that happened is our fault as loyal psn users, so why are we the ones getting punished?

If we aren't compensated... that will really show what kind of company Sony is... *looks at his xbox wondering if it will soon be his default console*

Don't think Anon have lied about what they've done & not done in the past. Why start now?

To think this all happened right after psn and steam linked together after the release of portal 2
Conspiracy? o_O

OT: My boyfriend and I both bought out last to games on Xbox because of this. I got MK for 360 because I want to play online and I had no idea how long it would be till I played. Plus my brother got it on 360, but that's a minor side note. XD

Called it. As soon as it went down again I said 'Bet they're trying to make it Anon proof'. Sad part is, they probably don't realize Sony Employees are also maybe a part of Anon.
Anyway, Sony pls hurry! Do what you got to but let me get to trolling people on portal 2!
