personally i think they are having trouble with the whole steam/psn intergration thing, since this has been happening since portal 2's release and some steam games are behaving oddly

i find it funny that sony is trying to ingore the fact that anonymous did have a valid point, because while tinkering with hardware can often lead to piracy, this is not a valid argument to completely make it illegal. For example, owning a gun can often lead to murder, but is owning a gun illegal?

Anonymous can eat a dick.
we love you too.

OT: They should of announced that PSN would be going offline due to an intrusion, instead...... four days later....... saying that they are rebuilding the entire infrastructure of their services.

Even after Sony admitted to shutting down the system, without warning to their customers, I wonder how many people will still blindly claim Anon did it like the little sheep they are.
About as many as will blindly defend "anon" like the little sheep they are.

Also, please. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis If you're going to try to use them for dramatic effect, at least learn how they work.
Anon actually came out in the beginning and said they didn't do it, then $ony admitted, twice, that they themselves shut down the system.

First was when they admitted they shut down the system to investigate the outside intrusion.

Second when they said they are now rebuilding the system for better security.

Each time more and more Sony-drones would rage that obviously someone else was responsible for turning off their lives.

Yes, you read that right and I wish I was being sarcastic, but on April 22nd, I spent the entire day reading through post upon post of people complaining that they couldn't play online, a huge percentage of the complainers were angry that they couldn't play Call of Duty.

At no point did it ever occur to them that they could of done something more productive with the free time they had, and will probably still have for a few more days until $ony fixes their fuck up.

A lot, because Anonymous did it.

A royal fuck up like this doesn't just happen, and leaders of Anonymous really only has artificial control over the group.

Actually, yes, major fuck ups can happen on a major company without outside interference of a third party [http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2011/mar/23/few-were-prepared-japanese-nuclear-crisis/]

Had Anon done it, they would of been more vocal about it since, lets face it, the last time they attacked the PSN the service was slow at best, and at worst only a handful of people were not able to connect to the service. Knocking out the entire PSN network would of been pretty epic if someone outside of $ony had actually done it, and that person or group would of been very excited about such a feat.

Claim Anon did it, go ahead, but ask yourself "why didn't $ony just come out on April 20th and say they were shutting down the PSN for a while to restructure it for security reasons?", "Why did they wait for two days after-the-fact to say they had shut it down?".
uuuh i dunno probably because some people hacked it, im not saying it was anon but it could have been ppl associated with them, and lets face what other hacking group would be able to do that, they have quite a few people, probably enough so that even if the main organization didn't do it, a splinter group could have.

Maybe now they will finally put in cross game chat. You know, like people have wanted for years? And what Xbox Live has had forever? The number one most requested feature?

So I still can't play Portal 2 online. Great.
I got a new PS3 the other day- I'm glad I redownloaded all my DLC before this happened. I would've been so annoyed otherwise.

thats a good analogy and while in some places it is illegal, its actually proven that states like texas or florida with right to carry laws, actually have 30 to 35% lower murder and crime rates then the national average, as opposed to states with trigger locks or handgun bands which have generally higher crime and murder rates (counter intuitive i know, and Im a liberal)

OT: i think what this shows is that giving people the means doesn't always increase the result and that though i suppose quite pointless the ability to jailbreak and modify the ps3 coud lead to some interesting and beneficial advancements which sony might actually be able to use to their betterment.

Incidentally, nobody at Sony has ever said Anonymous is involved. I like conjecture as much as the next guy [small](not much)[/small], but what they've said is this:
"An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services."
That fits with the alleged devkit thing. If there's a significant vulnerability in the PSN, then taking it offline to fix those problems makes plenty of sense.

What I don't get is why people are saying "OMG HOW DARE YOU ANON" and "OMG SONY THIS IS A COVERUP YOU MONSTERS" when neither of those make sense. Anonymous is much too incompetent for something like this, and stealing content from the PSN is an external intrusion. It doesn't look like anybody's lying, per se.
At least there's one cogent person in this thread. The sheer amount of readied pitchforks and torches in this thread is staggering.

(That said, I wouldn't be surprised if someone screwed up the Steam integration for PSN, and someone else found it while fuzzing the system for fun.)

i would agree but that once again begs the question, why didn't they let us know, as has been stated early there was no warning and furthermore a problem that gradual would have been able to be relayed to player in the form of a friendly reminder "we will be offline yada yada yada" it just doesn't make as much sense why now, and what did it.

the most logical explantion seems to be an external breach, thats where most of this hatred is coming from, (and i do agree there is quite a lot)

anon has never and will never attack anything without pointing out that they did, and to say, oh well its a splinter group, no that's just regular hackers then. That is just like saying, oh that guy committed a crime, so he must be with the mob.

I'm really sick of hearing about Anonymous. I'm not really sure how anyone's still making a connecting between something this major and a collection of loudmouthed activists...

oopsie... better plug this back in then, shall I?

Funny thought:
Clearly it's GlaDOS. She finally has access to PSN via Portal 2 and will now turn all PS3s and PSPs into widely distributed personality cores.

Yeah, I think we're in agreement that it was a sudden and extremely critical breach. Beyond that, we're just guessing about how someone found it or what they found... which they'll probably never tell us, in case they didn't fix it right. (Also possibly to see if they can catch anyone trying to exploit it in the future.)

Yeah, this is just the final phase of the ARG. Damn you, Valve!

All I know is that I can't access my free PC version of Portal 2.

So whoever caused this better be publicly flogged.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really matter, how many regular PSN users do you think know anything about the specifics of Anonymous' operations.

I'd put money down on the majority of PSN users knowledge of the situation is this:

- Anonymous said they are going to go after Sony for the Geohot fiasco.
- PSN goes down due to "external intrusion."

That's more than enough for the court of public opinion to come down on Anonymous. It doesn't matter that they already went after Sony in a manner that wouldn't affect the general PSN population. All that matters in their eyes is that Anon threatened to go after them in some way, and now their shit doesn't work.

PSN was working at 12 am Pacific Sunday morning, evidenced by my ability to watch Netflix. In fact, ever since the original outage, I've been able to watch Netflix after 9 or 10 PM. It seems that the PSN is only down during normal daylight hours, at least in the US Pacific timezone.

EDIT: Actually, wow, scratch that. Netflix works without being logged into PSN, now. My GF had been ignoring the warnings, while I was a good user and shut down when PSN login failed. So, there is a consolation: While you are waiting for PSN to come up, you can still watch "Ugly Betty".

You're welcome.

Rebuilding?! Dang, that's serious indeed. I sorta hope that after this rebuild, PSN works even better than before. That'd be worth the wait.
