It's almost certainly factional maneuvering rather than party maneuvering. It looks like the ALP Right have figured it will cost them too much in the factional squabble that is the caucus, where all the cabinet positions are decided, to push for retaining Atkinson as AG. Any other cabinet position would rightly be seen as pushing him to the side he's decided to jump before he was pushed.Major Tom said:
Jay Weatherill has already announced his intent to challenge Kevin Foley for the Deputy Premier and Treasurer positions and if that comes down close in numbers the loser may be tossed the AG position, considered #3 in the overall scheme of things.
On the other hand, with the Government looking to lose 9 seats of it's 10 seat majority in the House of Assembly and senior ministers copping major swings against them in their safe ALP seats, there's probably going to be a lot of factional bloodletting and hardball horse trading leading up to the state ALP caucus. The ALP Left may push for more senior cabinet positions but it's doubtful they have the push to play for AG so it'll probably come down to cliques within the ALP Right.

Maybe. It's possible that when he finally retires he'll be receiving a payout for being a sitting member for around 25 years, a sum which could probably be described to the average Aussie citizen as 'obscene', helped that decision as well.
